I can't stop watching it. Kevin Harlan is great as usual.

It's funny that I get goosebumps after watching it a dozen times....but I do.

The visual impact of that clip is hardly by accident, and rather the result of heads up coverage.
The network was sharply aware of the backdrop of the game, the very real emotional drama that had developed over the 13 game slump, and the tremendous impact a play like that would have, that when it infact occurred, they had all the cameras in place, ready to capture the reactions in realtime, and in doing so caught the full candid display of relief, and adulation exactly as it played out.

A classic clip that reveals through expression, this season of anguish, and a momentous team effort that ultimately managed to triumph in spite of it.

The play call was actually "the perfect storm". I told my son just prior to the snap, "the middle of the field is wide open". After the game, Cleo Lemon called this an exotic look. It's actually a damn fine way to take away one side of the field.

The Ravens were in what Rex Ryan calls "loaded zone". I recognized it immediately because my team played alot of loaded zone this year to address triple receiver formations.

The Ravens had the short side of the field zoned. My guess is that were zoning the Bookers (plural) side of the field. The wide side of the field was in man to man with a single safety over the top. The problem with the single safety over the top is that he only has coverage responsibility in the deep 2/3 on the zone side.

This defense leaves the man to man side ALL ALONE. Camarillo went in motion to make the wide side overloaded with triple receivers. They should have checked out of this defense because what they now had was man to man coverage versus triple receivers with NO safety help. The safety that originally aligned on the wide side hash was responsible for the second crosser from the zone side. The Mike backer was responsible for the first crosser from the zone side. They were responsible for crossers coming from the "loaded zone" side.

The pre snap motion should have mandated this coverage to be called off. They had a loaded zone versus the two receiver side (Booker and Booker). They had man to man coverage with no safety help to the wide side with three receivers. It was the perfect storm.....

The more I watch their secondary, the more I think the absense of Ray Lewis killed the Ravens defense.

I just took notice of something else. Watch what I think is Rex Ryan appearing at the top of the screen near the chain marker. As soon as he saw the motion he knew they were toast. This was a fine example of why Dom Capers has not been freelancing with our front and coverages. When you have injuries in your secondary, the backups and their errors appear. The Ravens were in an advanced coverage. All of the offensive motion, all of the pre snap movement is designed to destroy coverages.

I posted this earlier in reference to a specific coverage I saw. I knew the coverage and I know Rex Ryan uses the coverage. I know that he uses the coverage because I own - [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Coaching-Footballs-Defense-Rex-Ryan/dp/B00077BOTC[/ame]

In that series of videos Ryan discuss when and why he uses the loaded zone concept. These are my notes from the coverage. It is the Free Safety and Strong Safety reads. What you have to remember is that once the motion from Camarillo started - the defense should have abandoned the coverage. I think half of the defense had abandoned the coverage and half had not.

But for the football stupid, this will give you some idea of what it takes to run a non-standard defense. These are the safety keys. The safeties are "cheating" to get an edge on the play. Ryan calls them "universal patterns". He says that if you are not reading patterns with your secondary - the QB is playing pitch and catch.

    2Z Strong/Free Safety Pattern Read
    3Z Strong Safety Pattern Read

Always Key 2 to your side before you drop. He will tell you what number 1 will do. If 2 is eliminated by anything except vertical pressure (flats, crossing, blocking) then we can get our eyes on number 1.

    2 In Short
    1 In Medium
Ready to drive on in route of 1

    2 Quick out
    1 Curl
    Ready to drive on Curl

    2 Blocks
    1 Deep
Get depth fast, drive on ball

    2 Vertical
    1 Quick crossing pattern
    Get depth for vertical route

    2 Vertical
    1 Vertical
Get Depth, Stay in zone, Split receivers

    Coaching Points:
Linebacker runs with the second receiver through your zone. Stay eye to eye!
Safeties stay deeper than routes through your zone
Attack Patterns – Don’t backpedal, Flip Hips and run

    3Z specific coaching points:
    Free Safety takes first crosser
Linebacker’s priority should be width more than depth in his zone

ALL ZONE DEFENSES ARE NOW READING PATTERNS! They do not simply drop to a landmark. The offense knows the landmarks therefore they are not running patterns to the landmarks.

I do love this video. I just noticed after they win and all the players are jumping around Travis Daniels jumps on the back of one of the Ravens players walking around. It's funny but anyone know what that was about?

Ah thanks I didn't see who it was for the Ravens it just seemed funny at the time.

  13. Thanks for the breakdown Zod it was very inciteful. I dont know much about all that stuff but Ill tell you this much it was a great watching our team indentify, exploit, and execute a defenses weakness and take it into the endzone. It really felt good to win it with that play like we did. Give credit to Cam for calling it, Cleo for finding it on the field, and camrillo or however its spelt for his instincts after the catch. Talk about a play really coming together that was one of the best for us all season. I was really in awe watching it. It was a thing of beauty and our having our first win attached to it made it overwhelming for me.
