Has anyone been placing the perfect storm of Jon Gruden, west coast offense, and Andrew Luck together? Fresh in my mind is the 2010 interview with the Miami Hurricanes which seems to indicate a desire to coach again and a desire to coach in the area. When you combine that with the glowing praise for this organization (a week ago) at one of its worst moments in its history - I don't think his interest can be denied. Now throw in Ross' desire for a prolific offense. Now throw in Ross' desire for the big name. Now throw in the 1st pick in the draft running a West Coast in college. I don't mean to be a conspiracy theorist but this hire seems to be in the forecast.
Teachers work under contract. Its a contract that is only binding in this state in their profession. There is that and I think broadcaster to coach only serves to promote the organization he works for. Think about it. Do you think ESPN gets another Urban Myer if they sue for breach of contract?
I doubt it. Two games vs Jacksonville, one vs. Carolina and one vs. Houston in Week 16 when they might be resting players. I see 1-2 wins for Indy.
Yes but I think Ross would give up one of his New York properties for this quarterback if no other is close to his readiness. After watching Landry Jones last night, I don't think any QB is close. Look up the price paid for Eli. That will be the price we pay.
i like gruden the only thing that scares me is how he just kept a revolving door at qb at the end of his run in tampa thats not what we need, we need to finally find the replacement for marino and that means drafting a qb in the first round something we havent done.
You need a refresher course in Gruden/Tampa. They were cash strapped and draft pick poor when he walked in the door.
Gotta agree. I think if a guy like Gruden cones here, we may only be picking 1 or 2 players in the 2012 draft. (If we don't finish with the worst record, of course)
i didnt say when he walked through the door i said near the end when it was qb after qb he was going through MNF even cracked jokes about it hell gruden himself jokes about it. 5 qbs in 2 seasons
Gruden & Luck would be awesome. no one knows how the contract was drawn up, might still be a quiet possibility.
In case you haven't noticed... Carolina can score points (Newton and Smith, LaFell can be a factor)... Houston has Foster, Schaub, Johnson and more... okay you got me with Jacksonville, though they still have a stout defense that doesn't allow a ton of points... well... sometimes anyway.
i think if he wants the job the contract with mnf wouldnt be a huge problem so i would consider him a possibility
Houston could be playing for a playoff spot so I'm not sure why they'd be resting players during their 15th game. Indy's final game is Jax. If they're sitting in the driver seat for Luck or the "bag 'a picks", I'd be shocked if they didn't pull players.
The contract has a clause... like GridIronKing mentioned earlier in the thread. He isn't locked in to the contract until the 2012 season starts. He has all off season to decide if he wants to get back into coaching in the NFL.
Just looking at that situation disregards the snowball affect. They were a mirror image of us during that time as it pertains to overpaid defensive stars. Good stuff Adam... I started this night wondering what "Big Name" has been out long enough to get a staff together. Who can Fisher bring with him with which he has any familiarity? I think that is a good portion of this regimes failure. By the time Parcells got out of Dallas his staff had been poached and picked over to the point that he had to beg a guy to come out of retirement.
very good point zod. i think your pick is more likely. i suspect we choose an offensive coach instead of a defensive coach like fisher. not sure who on his former staff would be available at this time. right now i'm trying to get a sense of who would be available as GM. We have to get rid of Ireland. We need impact players now and Ireland doesnt have the ability to find them. once we have gm settled, let the gm make the coaching decision i do think if we did get fisher (low probability) he would bring someone like heimerdinger as OC. He died recently but someone similar i would imagine
I've never been more ready for an offseason. A clear picture of draft position, the start of a new era with a new coach. These coaching rumors are going to keep flying around until January. Maybe some hope depending where that draft position is. Cutting some overpaid Ireland players.
Exactly, and I like Fisher and think he would be a good fit, but we need points first and foremost and Fisher is just not that type of Coach, neither is Cowher, As this season is swirling around the toilet bowl, and Sparano is looking at New Haven real estate, I cannot help but think that this works against us, second time a supposedly offensive minded HC flamed out in Miami, we will then default to type and go with a Defensive minded HC.
Hire the head coach on the ability the man has to instill leadership upon his players, accountability, toughness, and Passion, find the man who walks in the room and demands respect..The x's and O's simply cannot come first..
I agree with dj. Forget about whether they're offensive or defensive minded. Find a guy who will be a true leader and actually have the team prepared to play week in and week out.

In Oakland, he didn't jerk Rich Gannon around. In Tampa, Jon never had that one good young quarterback he could count on. You give him Andrew Luck, who is being coached by David Shaw who was Gruden's QC coach in Philly and also played for Jim Harbaugh who coached for Gruden's former assistant Bill Callahan in Oakland, and you will not see Gruden play musical chairs at the quarterback position. Contrary to popular opinion, Jon Gruden is not death to young quarterbacks. Well, it won't be Heimerdinger. He passed away from cancer.
Disagree with this, because Miami absolutely does not need to hire another defense first, run the ball, manage the game mindset head coach who wants to have a ball control offense and win the TOP game. Miami needs a guy who is going to run an up tempo, exciting style on both sides that is aggressive, attacks the opposition, and doesn't worry about TOP.

Like Jim Harbaugh? I think when it comes down to it, a competent coach is going to be able to do whatever the talent on his team allows him to do. Its nice to be able to be aggressive offensively, but you need the talent to do so. If you don't have the talent to do that, you need to figure out how to win.
I really don't care about having the words ''fun'' and ''exciting'' involved in my head coach search. In our case now, we have a coach who simply does not have the skillset to get his team to play in the right mindset, They care about Sparano yes, but that does not mean he brings out the beast in them..You may see some spurts, but there is something missing, the nature of the team is not mentally tough.. I have seen few players since the beginning laying it on the line and playing with an aggressive nature. I think there is a switch in a players head that gets them to play at a high level, or the talent just lays in dormant, and I believe Tony has failed at finding it.I believe you have to find the Alpha male first that can get that out of his players and let him hire the right x's and O's guy.

The price for Eli and Rivers 2005 swap was in effect #1 overall for #4 overall (after each QB was selected by their former clubs)....then NYG included 3rd in same draft to SD, and then 1st and 5th to SD the next draft. Andrew Luck's price has to be more than that.
Not sure if Gruden accomplished anything with a team of players that he put together. Dungy fans will tell you they don't like "Chucky" because his notoriety came with Dungy's players. (The Raiders, however, went to the Super Bowl with Gruden's)
I could care less about motivational skills if the head coach who can motivate is the second coming of Chuck Knox. We have to move away from that philosophy and style.
So you are saying pick #4 and #100 in this draft plus at worst a #13 and #150 the following year is not worth sliding 2-4 spots? He's good but he's not God. Eli Manning had the same hype machine cranked up around his pick. Which is why it was a no brainer for AJ Smith to make the pick. Before I go I will remind you of a certain players 90 million dollar contract signed just this year. Then I will point out that his team just went out and proved that without him, they are historically bad. Do you think there will be some kind of pressure in Indy to get Peyton Manning some help?
