What do you guys think... After a couple more losses should Ross force an early retirement to Sparano, and via the confusion, put Miami in the running for Luck/Barkley?
I don't really care what they do with Coach Dummy. I bet he picks up a couple wins to save his job over the next month or so, but the end result will be the same mediocre pile of 7-9 garbage. I'm for whatever is best for us to hire the best candidate at the end of the season. If firing Coach Dummy sooner makes that happen, then I'm all for it.
I wouldn't make a decision until the season ends. Would probably lose a good portion of the locker room firing him mid-season, and I don't really see much benefit.
We might be on the path to loosing most of the locker room by mid season anyway... Not entirely sure what to think at this point...I dont think this is a winning regime though. That much is becoming clear.
If you take a look at recent examples of mid-season coaching changes, then canning an unsuccessful HC put the teams in question far out of reach of the #1 overall selection.
...because the next group of FAs will love to play for an owner who tells them to mail it in for a higher draft pick.
I would have fired him 3 minutes after he said he was baffled and didn't have any answers. The 3 minutes would be needed for me to get all the cursing at him out.
I appreciate the sentiment, but if you haven't noticed there are at least 3 articles rounding the local newspapers suggesting the idea posted here. One with insider information that hints to just the mid-season firing suggested. Also, you'll notice that I choose to stay with Sparano through the season's bitter end, not because I have a bag over my head, but because mid-season firings rarely work out, and make an owner seem desperate (not that Ross didn't reveal that during the offseason).
For a Head Coach to admit publicly after an 0-2 start that he doesn't know whats wrong with his team does not instill much confidence. I said last week that the Texans was a must win for them to restore confidence of the team and in the fans. It was also needed to show the team they could win a game and win at home. This week a win can restore the confidence of the players and begin to restore the confidence of the fans at least on the road that is. Another loss will erode more confidence and will tighten the noose.
I heard the ultimatum was, if the Phins have a losing season, Sparano loses his job. If that's what Ross told him, 0-4 is not a losing season. I'd wait until the Phins lost 9 games, then let him go, respectfully. Ross would've held to his word. The very next thing I'd do is call Bill Cowher, Jeff Fisher, and Jon Gruden. In that order. Don't *****-foot around this time.
Well, Sparano should've been fired after the 38-7 loss to the Patriots. Ross wanted to, but didn't pull the trigger when he didn't get Harbaugh, and his refusal to pull the trigger likely cost him Cowher. I'd just say at this point, it's getting harder for me to care, because I could easily see this team ripping off a few wins, only to choke again down the stretch to finish 7-9; which in my opinion, is the worst thing that could happen. Either Sparano gets it right, and turns this team around (highly unlikely) or you go down swinging with him. I mean, are Mike Nolan and Todd Bowles (whose been considered a HC candidate by a few teams, probably to satisfy the Rooney Rule sadly) really going to do something that Tony Sparano isn't if he's fired midseason to turn it around? Realistically in the AFC, the Dolphins probably have to go no worse than 11-3 or 10-4 to even have a shot at the playoffs this season. I just don't see it either way, so I've tried to make myself numb to it in hopes that Sparano and Ireland either make good on this season, or are ousted the minute this season ends.
If I were Ross, I would give Sparano the whole season because I doubt Cowher or Gruden would sign-on if we fired him now. I think after the Sparano fiasco last year Ross should be careful. A bad reputation as an employer could hamper his ability to sign the best available coach and setback any hopes we have for a competitive team. Steve
Well, if you take the quote out of context like all the publications did, sure. But in context, per Omar's blog- "The question was: How do you explain being 1-11 over the past 12 games at home? Sparano’s answer was: “It’s baffling to me, it really is. I don’t have an answer for it. We’ve just got to do a better job,” Sparano said. He then continued, without delay: “I told you before if you look back last year its turnovers, and a high turnover ratio. Today [vs. Houston] we turned it over twice and I don’t know if we [got a turnover] so its two more in the hole. Last week [against the Patriots] we wound up one behind, so you’re minus three in turnovers again, and those things [turnovers] hurt you. There’s some other things out there that we have to take ownership of. There are some things out there that we left out there on the field that we’ve got to take ownership of. It starts in practice and our team has to do a better job in practice.” DOES THAT SOUND LIKE: I DON’T HAVE AN ANSWER FOR IT?" Heck- we started the season with two of the best teams in the AFC. I expect a pretty big win this week. Actually I expect to be up 3-2 after the Jets game. My two cents. Vent away though.
I never understood what the love for Harbaugh was last Season, other than a new young face as a HC in the NFL... Maybe it was because none of the other ex-hc's were willing to come over to MIA... and maybe none of them are still willing to come on over, anybody thought of that??? IMO, we still need some stability and all this talking (media, and fans) over the last year or so is showing up on the team's performance... This is a team who's players and coaches are in pins and needles, even if they say that they don't pay attention to what is being said outside of the organization...
If they go 0-4 or something, you still need to ride it out with him I think. Why promote a temporary interim coach like Daboll or Nolan? It might get a few cheap wins, but who wants that? At the end of the day if we fail he's going to look for a big name new coach like Cowher, Gruden, etc or give a well liked guy like Rob Ryan a shot anyway. Stick with Sparano until January, and if the team is 8-8 or worse than look elsewhere.
I refuse to use the ignore button. Reading every post and watching the pain and some of the "opinions" on this board are both comical, sad, insightful and Shakespearian.
Come on Monst there's nothing to support "how smart" our coach is other than your perception of him. I've never seen an article or even a mention anywhere questioning our coach's intelligence other than by members of this board. From the way that he prepares for games, including meticulous charting of statistics and play counts, I find it hard to believe that we should call his intelligence into question. Not everyone is going to be a mad scientist like Bill Belichek. If you want to criticize a specific part of his football management skills - say for example clock management - that I can get behind. But I don't think we would have hired him in the first place if he was Forrest Gump, despite the fact that he was annointed by Bill Parcells himself.
I say get rid of Sparano no matter what. Even if we go 9-7! He's a below average coach who never should have been fast tracked to HC. Huge mistake by the overrated Bill Parcells!
Hey I also like Luck, but the problems we have go deeper than just QB. We need new leadership. The things I've seen this season (players not conditioned, 12 players in the huddle) goes on the head coaches table. I use to back Sparano, but it looks like he is over his head with this job.
I know this isnt the smartest fanbase in the league but how blind are you to think that QB is the only need we have?
I quadrupled my number of people on my ignore list. From 1 to 4. Or even the main need at this point. Our biggest weakness through 2 weeks has been our secondary. Followed by our O-line. Then comes Linebackers.
If Ross fires Sparano before the end of the season he will always be an also ran as a NFL football team owner. I hear the prime candidate for Sparano's job is the DC of the worst defense in the NFL. Doesn't he already have enough on his plate already?
There made the playoffs 2 of the 3 years prior to Manning's arrival (1995 and 1996). They made the playoffs in Manning's 2nd and 3rd year (1998 and 1999), but not 1st or 4th. The real question is, how much "better" were the Colts once they got out of the AFC East.
Miami WILL NOT be in the running for Luck, we are much better than the Colts, Chiefs, and Seahawks. I'm okay with Ireland staying on, but Tony has very nearly worn out his welcome. The OL is still a mess, the players are only now rounding into playing shape, and the Tony still cannot manage his timeouts. I'm fine with seeing what Nolan can do with the rest of the season if we go 0-4 before the bye-week. The players will be motivated since they must now impress the next coaching staff to remain part of the team going forward.
Shouldn't Sparano know whether or not his team forced a turnover off the Texans? I mean, seriously...come on.
If I was TS, I'd tell Ross to go Phuc himself. Thanks for the extension and after you left me out to dry, I'd take your money and run.
