I think it has to do with Pujols's age. The length of the contract he might demand might be too long for a 31 year old.

Damn, can't believe we're actually discussing potential signings of Pujols/Fielder/Wilson/Reyes. Very awesome.

Discussing is one thing, doing is another.

I'll believe it when the ink is a. dry and b. not invisible.

Be honest with yourself: do you see Jeff Loria putting his signature on a $200 million check addressed to Albert Pujols?

No. Because Pujols is 31, will demand too long of a contract, and we already have Sanchez. That would be a stupid contract.

I do expect us to be realistically in the hunt for Reyes or Wilson. 15 to 18 million a year should be enough.

Signing the best player in a sport is never a stupid move, but I do understand what you're saying about the contract and his performance. But every contract winds up paying more than the player deserves about 3-4 years in, so I'm not concerned about Pujols potentially being overpaid at age 36.

    Anyway:

What do you think about avoiding a 31 year old in favor of a 33 year old?

Getting Pujols would ensure that the stadium is actually filled.

I would be so upset if we signed Aramis Ramirez. Especially if he ends up as our "big" move.

I mean, I want Pujols, but that's because he's Pujols. He's an amazing player and guy. But if he demandes a 7 year contract, at his age, give me Reyes. Signing Reyes let's us move Hanley to third, and trade Dominguez.

I know he's not the most intimidating name on a list that includes Fielder and Pujols, but I think he's a great talent. He's good at all phases of the game, from base running to fielding to hitting.

I forgot C.J Wilson, though. He would probably be my first choice. Reyes is after him.

I think Reyes is hugely overrated.

And yes, C.J. Wilson should take priority. We're moving into a pitcher's park and have built a roster oriented around pitching. Need to get better on the mound, especially in this division.

Sign Wilson and convince Vasquez to come back. All of a sudden, we have deadly pitching, if healthy.

To come back and actually play well enough to be worth the effort of convincing him in the first place.

The biggest problem with this organization is how it keeps trying to catch lightning in a bottle with over the hill vets. We need less of that behavior. No more Javy.

There is no hoping in that department. Javy Vasquez is a fine pitcher, and would be a great number 4, if we signed C.J Wilson. I don't see why you have a problem with him coming back.

    JJ
    Wilson
    Sanchez
    Vasquez
    Nolasco

Awesome. I don't see the problem with that.

Because I don't think his recent play invalidates his utter awfulness from the beginning of the season or last year.

And what I'm saying is, one source, despite how reliable he apparently is, does not automatically dismiss a whole page worth of discussion about our off season plans. Jackson has been wrong before.

    That's weird but OK.

The best thing to do is wait until the off season. We could very well be quiet and I won't be surprised. But one source, even though i'ts Barry Jackson, shouldn't dismiss all the rumors and discussions we've had. Signing Reyes/Wilson/Fielder/Pujols is still a possibility.

It's not weird. It's a humorous metaphor to describe the extent to which Barry Jackson should generally be trusted.

We can of course continue to talk about the possibility, but we have here a reliable reporter waving a caution flag, which puts a damper on any and all discussion we might continue to engage in.
