The Miami Dolphins cut CB Benny Sapp late this afternoon and signed CB Brandon King who went undrafted in 2010 out of Purdue. Sapp will get his entire $1.9 million salary from the Dolphins for being a vested veteran who was on an NFL roster for Week 1. dolphinstalk.com
They signed Brandon King, who spent 12 games of his rookie season on IR last year (Indy). Was among final cuts with Colts this year.
He played some nickel in college, but I wonder if they aren't planning to throw Jimmy Wilson out there in the nickel?
Well, don't they usually put a guy on boundary corner and move someone inside on the slot like VD? Put Wilson or even Carrol on boundary corner.
No, I got what you're saying, and I'm trying to tell you that you're wrong. Or, at the very least, you have a double standard for what constitutes an acceptable level of injury and recovery. If you're going to knock King for being hurt in 2010, you have to hold Allen to that same standard. And King is apparently in better physical condition than Allen.
Our corner depth chart now looks like this.

Player Exp Draft

Vontae 3 1

Smith 3 2

Carroll 2 5

Wilson R 7

King 2 UDFA

Wilson and King have been active all of 5 games between them. Carroll looked absolutely lost out there. Will Allen is coming or they're simply masochists.
Know nothing about him , but seeing he is new to the team he won't be playing soon. NC showed nothing , so to me this means they are banking on more playing time for Wilson , which should produce some energy at the least. We'll see if he can get his hands on some footballs in a real game now.
Caroll was toasted, no doubt about that Muck, but he is in his second yr, and facing a top 3 offense in the NFL, give him some time. Last yr he did well at boundary corner, this game he looked completely unprepared, but that is how it goes with young players, hard to just give up on him already is it not?
Will Allen isn't in physical condition to play football. Were you watching him in preseason? That wasn't the same guy who was one of the two best corners in the AFC East in 2008.
Padre , did you see anything different from NC in the pre season games? I didn't . I thought he showed promise and hoped for a step up this year , haven't seen any step forward at all.
NOOOOOO!!!!!!! Haha but seriously, I am pretty sure Wilson is going to pass Carroll on the depth chart if hasnt done so already.
I still don't think you're grasping that Will Allen is not in physical condition to play football. He spent most of training camp sidelined and unable to practice, barely played in preseason, and has not been signed by any of the other 31 NFL teams. This. Also, I'm going to go ahead and say the Jets will sign Benny Sapp in anticipation of our week 6 game.
He was ok last year. I'm not giving up on him. I'm highlighting that Carroll's play certainly wouldn't have given me confidence to cut my only veteran reserve. The guy who was targeted last night just got promoted, and is now the 'veteran' back there. And that is terrifying. Especially with another team whose traditionally shredded us thru the air (Houston) coming to town on a short week. Two weeks after that, it's Philip Rivers and Co. Jimmy Wilson might be a nice player, but he's still a rookie. And he barely saw the field last night. They need a veteran back there, stat.
Wouldn't Will Allen have been picked up already by some team if he was any good? My issue with our d-backs is that they not only can't cover guys but these guys don't seem to know how to tackle.
I don't understand how someone can want to put a player on the field who's not physically able to play. It's not like Will Allen bought a prostitute in front of Jeff Ireland or anything; the dude is physically not ready to play ball. We could sign him, sure, but it would be a total waste of a roster spot because he would be inactive every week. It's nothing personal against you as you seem to be taking it, I just don't see how you can mentally skirt around the issue. At this point you're basically saying "Okay, maybe he's not ready to go, but sign him anyway." Which is ridiculous on its face.
I'll give it a wild guess, but I think his "deal" is that Will Allen, right now, couldn't contribute even if we wanted him to. As evident by the fact that he couldn't practice, was cut by a team with questionable CB depth and got zero interest as a free agent. Not a single team in this league even signed him as a backup. He's done.
I thought Will Allen was going balls to the wall on the field during preseason. He was playing like he wanted to make the team. Granted I am not an NFL scout but I dont see why Carroll should be our third CB, especially after he has been uninspiring all year. Believe me, I was rooting for him but he looks lost out there. At least it looked like Sapp had a little fire... Again, all just my humble opinion.
We really don't know that. He has plenty of injury history. I felt he was breaking down in 2008. But him not signing anywhere isn't necessarily indicative of current health. It's Tuesday after Week 1. This is generally when veterans get signed. That injury history could still scare teams away though. The locker room was shocked he was released. He felt he was healthy. Bill Belichick apparently felt he was in good shape. I think Allen was cut more for business reasons than anything else. Hell, if Will Allen truly isn't in physical condition to play football, he'd fit right in.
See, here's my problem with that: if the team didn't want to guarantee Allen's salary, and that was the only barrier to his being on the team, then he would be signed right now. It's Tuesday, the first day of Week 2. Allen's theoretical contract wouldn't have been guaranteed. If he was able to play, he probably wouldn't have been cut to begin with; he'd have restructured like Vernon Carey did. Instead, he's sitting at home right now while Brandon King is now our 5th CB. I don't see how one can escape the conclusion that Will Allen has a fork-shaped object jutting out from his spinal column.
You good man, right now people are buzzing over the poor secondary play and are out to prove themselves "right".
All "people" are doing is ask a legitimate question: Why oh why was Will Allen sidelined for almost the whole preseason, got cut by a team that evidently has CB depth issues and got zero interest from anyone else if he's such an upgrade over what we're having? I mean, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it's really hard not to answer that with "because he isn't physically able to play".
He did look good in the preseason and his asking price may be to high for the amount of playing time he would receive. I think perhaps folks forget that these guys do not play for "free" or for "happy to be here", they have asking prices and if a team doesn't like the price, they pass on them.
I don't think he looked good in the preseason at all. He looked like a guy who's still a mile away from being 100%. Yeah, he was better than the Dallas 3rd unit, but that's hardly relevant. As for his asking price, apparently not a single team in this league wants to pay it. That, to me, says a lot more than one preseason game against players who'll be lucky to see more than a handfull of snaps per season.
Disagreed. I didn't see a guy who could make an immediate and significant contribution at his position. The Will Allen of 2011 is a far cry from the Will Allen of 2008. At this point he's basically the defensive Chad Pennington minus the Jets association.
Brandon, Brandon, Brandon ..... I'm seriously wishing I wasn't on medication and could drink! I love LOVE the Dolphins but I am seriously questioning if Ireland is trying to sabotage this team for the new regime possibly. It just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense with some of the decisions. Feel free to jump in guys and gals, I'm sure I'm late to the party here.
Not necessarily, Smith and Davis are obviously the 2 best cover corners on the team. Wilson, on the other hand, may have the ability to blow up the slot receiver before he can even get off the line of scrimmage. Definitely something that would have helped last night. I think I see where they're going. I hope it works.
As you pointed out the 2008 version of Will Allen was an elite pro bowl level corner. No one is expecting that I don't think , again it is hard to see just some plays on tv , but to me he looked good , certainly good enough to consider if there wasn't a significant injury . Not that it really means much , but Joe Rose was saying he thought Allen was by far the best corner other than VD and SS , and I would presume he should have some inside insight. I tend to think it has to be the still injured concern , though I honestly didn't see that from his snaps , this isn't looking good on Ireland , there were CB's available and imo you need 3 starting quality corners . We are no where near that right now.
