Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne stepped on the podium inside the Sun Life Stadium club level on Tuesday and displayed the same poise and self-assuredness that he has exhibited in the pocket during a most encouraging preseason. Addressing more than 100 fans at a Dolphins Touchdown Club luncheon, a confident Henne spoke about his growth, his relationship with Brandon Marshall and the team’s more aggressive offensive approach. “There are a lot of things I can do with this offense,” he said. “There is no turning back.” Henne, who had a splendid 93.4 quarterback rating in preseason, has been buoyed not only by the bolder offensive philosophy, but the trust that offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has placed in him to change plays when needed. Whether he becomes the guy we hope for him to become or not, at this point he has all my respect.. he's been through A LOOOOOOOT and he hasn't stepped down at all. A lot of people would have just quit in his situation. Hell, a couple months ago the team was still trying to replace him after he'd lead all the team workouts through the lockout.
I want to bang my head against the wall. So many things wrong with this passage. But besides Barry Jackson's misunderstanding, he has a great writeup of Henne's appearance at this luncheon. This part in particular is important: This is a confirmation of what we feared in the second half of last season. Henne did lose everyone's confidence and they did want Tyler Thigpen starting instead. It's good that Henne began changing teammates' minds. Is that confidence I read?
All last year it was obvious that Henning had this "don't make a mistake" philosophy. It was nice to hear Henne say this: “Brian Daboll puts a lot on my shoulders – puts everything on me,” he told emcees Joe Rose and Kim Bokamper. “He says, ‘If you see something, get us into the right play and make it go. And if it doesn’t work, we’ll come back the next play and make it work.’ Read more: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/#ixzz1XDzKP47l That seems like the polar opposite of anything Henne would have heard last year.
Regardless of what you think of his play on the field, off the field he hasn't done anything wrong and from as much as you can gather from interviews and press conferences seems like a decent guy. Really excited for our game, will be sporting my aqua #7 that day. Light that scoreboard up Monday.
Good for Chad. I'll say this. I'm not the biggest fan of Chad, but I'm a big supporter. He's the QB of the team, so I support him and hope he does well. His preseason has caused me to consider the fact, maybe he did need another year and some other things working in his favor. I just want to see progression. Even if he plays OK, average, mediocre, this team can win 10 games IMO. With the defense, improved ST's and playmakers, all Chad needs to do is enough.
It is my opinion that Henne is line for one of those 3,800 yd types of passing seasons, not sure how productive he will be in terms of Td to Int's but we have enough talent at Wr to put up numbers if the ball is thrown. And this is with 55% passes last yr, however the routes were not going to produce much of anything.
year three of starting is when you take the training wheels off a QB. He looks like he finally figured out how to play this game. Should be exciting
I'm not sure if I should be hyped, or just curious tbh, we have literally no idea what is behind the curtain heading into gm #1.
so now he didn't look good in preseason? How did you come to that "supposed" confirmation based on what Bess said? I don't see anything "Thigpen implied" or time stamp implied. Could it not be related to Pennington's ominous, veteran, leadership presence rather than anything Thigpen related?
Where did I say that? I said there are things wrong with that sentence. Specifically: 1. The stat is called passer rating, not quarterback rating. Quarterback rating is an ESPN made-for-TV stat that says Dan Orlovsky is a better QB than Ben Roethlisberger. Jackson is incorrect to state that Henne had a 93.4 quarterback rating in preseason. He did not. He had a 93.4 passer rating. 2. 93.4 is not "splendid." To contrast, David Garrard posted a 90 passer rating in 2010, and is now out of a job. 93.4 is for sure an improvement over the 74s and 75s Henne posted over the last two years, but it's not "splendid." Tom Brady's 111 passer rating in 2010 is splendid. I could also get into the fact that Jackson is whipping out rarely-used superlatives to describe preseason performance, but I won't. I see you've forgotten what happened in the second half of 2010. Refer to Stringer Bell's signature for a reminder. Then again, I'm not sure if he still has the relevant Marshall quote in there, so just refer to events like Fasano *****ing Henne out in the middle of the field after a failed third down conversion, and Channing Crowder's statements about Henne post-cutting. The fact that Bess said that Henne changed perceptions means that a negative perception was turned into a positive perception.
You realize that the NFL recognizes both quarterback and passer rating as the same thing? Not that I care about whether people call it quarterback rating or passer rating because I know what they mean... but seriously, get over it. http://www.nfl.com/help/quarterbackratingformula And also "splendid" is a relative term so stop acting like it's absolute... you come off as arrogant doing so.
Oh well, I get hyped up for the season just being a Dolfan my friend!! I am always ready to go. I just wish I could be there in person to root our team to victory!!
Yeah, I've seen it called both passer rating and QBR. That new ESPN thing is being called the TQBR, but frankly I don't care much for that one.
Yep, passer rating and QB rating are synonymous. I also don't see how the TQBR is ever going to catch on and become an official stat. Wonder how many years ESPN will even keep doing it.
Everyone's confidence? Every single player on the team? I would sure like to see some link that proves every member of the team felt this way.
Nitpicking about the "stat definition" is worthy of you banging your head against the wall? How are Matt Ryan's 81 preseason QBR, Flacco's 83 QBR, Schaub's 89 QBR, Cassel's 86 QBR, and Freeman's 72 QBR? How about Garrard's 57 preseason QBR? How do those fare in the splendid category? So what you're saying is you're not sure if Thigpen had anything to do with this? Wasn't Thipgen reamed out (in the old offense) for taking risks downfield?
