MONDAY UPDATE (Dolphins): In the past two years, the Dolphins have signed five developmental players in the aftermath of the Labor Day weekend deadline to cut down to 53. But that approach changed Monday, when the Dolphins signed two established backup types, one of whom should help immediately and one could if needed: tight end Dante Rosario and guard/center Ryan Cook, who also can play tackle. I suspect Cook is here because they are not thrilled with Garner's development. If it is not a AFC Championship game, a playoff clinching game, or the SB, some crazed fan should surmount the wall and slap Sparano if he puts bush on a punt return...that makes no sense at all.
I think Sparano's reason for keeping Spitler over Edds is poor. I don't care which one is ahead as Spitler is probably our 7th or 8th LB and will only contribute a little this year. The question is who has more potential? IMO Edds has more upside.
Our 2006 2nd rounder that we gave up for Duante Culpepper has finally made his way to Miami. Welcome Ryan Cook. Good depth signing imo. I like Rosario as well. Hes a solid receiving option though drops do plague him from time to time.
Whenever I see it mentioned about a star player on punt returns...I think of Troy Vincent, helmet to the side of knee, out for the season, on a punt return. It was about 1993 I think, they set up some kind of a reverse on a punt return, Vincent was the one to take the ball on the reserve and bam. I think it was in a 1 point loss to Pittsburgh. After that Thanksgiving win, we never won another game that season and the Cowboys never lost another, and our star players kept dropping like flies.
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every single thing you said 110% spot on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so pissed off right now. It is gonna take me some time to get over this.
Yessir, in fact he was a good case in chief about the overvaluation of draft choices. C-Pepe worked out, we would have traded C-Pepe for a journeyman Olinemen, even still..this is not exactly highway robbery that happened as it turned out.
Nope. He is here because Berger was making too much money to be a backup. If they were not thrilled with Garner, then they could have cut him rather than Berger, who has done pretty well when he has had to play.
He is not better depth than Berger. While the Pats are signing a Pro Bowl guard who's pass blocking is like trying to get through a stonewall, we sign a guy who pass blocks like Carey and Colombo, only he is not old and been beaten up for year, so as to to justify it. Then we see Gurode signing with the Ravens and we don't even give him a sniff??? Sorry, SMH
Ryan Cook 2008, 499 pass block snaps 7 sacks, 7 hits, 26 pressures. 2009, 7 snaps and 1 pressure, he did not play much. 2010: 309 pass block snaps, 3 sacks, 1 hit, 10 pressures. Total 815 snaps, 10 sacks, 8 hits, 37 pressures. Joe Berger 2009, 265 pass block snaps, 0 sacks, 1 hit, 4 pressures. 2010, 574 snaps 2 sacks, 3 hits and 11 pressures. Total 839 snaps, 2 sacks, 4 hits, 15 pressures. Please, nobody try to spin this move into some sort of talent upgrade. I ain't buying!!!
I would ask where he was playing. As I understand it, he played outside and in. - sent from my EVO 3D via Tapatalk -
In 2008 he was the starting RT. That 7, 7, and 26 came there. He was graded the 49th OT in the league at -4.3. Played 15 games there and 978 snaps. His combined run blocking was a +6.3, but his pass blocking was a -8.2 and penalties a -2.4. When you include their WC game against the Eagles it goes to 1056 snaps, 4 more pressures and negatives across the board drop his grade to -9.7 They thought enough of him that he became a 16 game backup in 2009 and was a part time starter in 2010. In 2010 he started 6 games at RG and 1 game at C, and played most of another at C. He actually did better at C than he did at RG. He was a -0.7 at C with a +1.3 as a run blocker. No sacks hits or pressures in 97 total snaps. At G, he played 448 total snaps, -6.2 overall, and 3, 1, and 9 on sacks, hits, pressures. The final pressure must have been as a RT, because he played 7 snaps there too. I do not consider him better than Berger or an overall depth upgrade from Berger, but with him and Garner we have two guys who can play about anywhere, though Cook has never been a LT that I know of.
The thing that pisses me off is that they're $12 million under the salary cap and still "far apart" with the likes of Kendall Langford and Paul Soliai on extensions. In other words, they're just going to let that cap space go to waste. They can say it's because of the poor ticket sales, they need to cut down on expenses for business purposes, but it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ticket sales are poor because nobody is convinced they're actually trying to be a better team.
Calling Waters a Pro Bowler is a major stretch, Columbo's a "Pro Bowler" as well. The Pats cut Meriweather, Sanders, Tate & Banta Cain, among others. We're complaining about AJ Edds, who's our 4th ILB behind Burnett, Dansby & Mitchell. The Ravens also signed Ricky, so Gurode can join him and McKinnie on the washed up Vets section of the Ravens roster. I dunno if Spitler is better than Edds, but neither guy will see the field as a LB so whoever can play ST better should get the roster spot IMO.
People can blame Tony or Jeff for cutting Edds, but let's not forget, it's Mike Nolens defense and I'm sure Mike is the one that choose to keep Spitler over Edds.
Perhaps, but TS is the one who provided the reason and that reason is what I was commenting on. And all I'm saying is I disagree with the move. That disagreement isn't dependent on who made the decision. I don't see anybody's opinions as above being questioned. I certainly disagreed with many of Don Shula's decisions over the years.
Waters was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2005 through 2008 and in 2010. Colombo never has went to the Pro Bowl. If someone went to the most recent Pro Bowl, until there is a vote for the next one, to me they are still a Pro Bowler. I do not see the comparison with what Colombo has done.
its not that we need the money right now, there is no one out there, they will sign langford at some point, but there is no more need to hurry up
I agree, I didn't like the move either, but if we fans are going to complain, then we need to blame the right person. In this case, we need to blame Nolan, not Tony or Jeff.
The final decisions are always made by Jeff Ireland. There is no way to know if they did ask Nolan, and if they did, what Nolan said. What we do know for certain is, Ireland has final authority on all personnel moves, and that Edds is gone.
