Dog bit me. Advice?

Hey. I was riding a bike. I passed two trashy looking women walking dogs on leashes. As my bike neared a pitbull, it lunged and got my calf.

Broke the skin. Nothing too bad. Oozed blood like a long pair of scratches. She yanked it back before it 'sank in'.

They seemed 'rough' and burly, so I didn't wanna get in a major fight, but did need to know if the dog was vaccinated. They said the dog gets all it's shots at a vet place around the corner (they named the street, and there is one there). They said the dog doesn't like bikes.

They wanted to get outta there and I should have insisted on their number to contact them, but I didn't. I rushed to the vet, actually, and got rubbing alcohol to disinfect the wound (about 2 min after bite). Then came home and put neosporin on it.

So now I am considering if I need rabies shots. I don;t think so. The dog was normal looking before and after the attack. It lunged with reason. The breed is known to do this stuff. Plus the owners did assure me multiple times the dog has all it's vaccinations.

I asked a doctor friend what he thought and he said I should at least get a tetanus booster shot.

    Any other suggestions guys?

I would listen to the doctor, and not trust what these women have to say.

Yeah. A couple doctor friend agree it's a one in a million chance of rabies, but I def need a tetanus booster.

I don't really trust the women, but the idea of $1000 and a series of unpleasant rabies shots for something that's a one-in-a-miilion chance just doesn;t make me feel like I need the rabies shots. I have as much chance of being killed in a car, or whatever today.

Thing is, my gut feeling, based on how the dog acted, it that it was helathy, normal and being a protective pit bull that didn't like my bike encoraching on it. My gut frrling on the owners is that they were upset the dog did that because they were worried the dog could get put down or they could get sued... they were really emphatic about it having all it's shots and my gut was that they weren't lying about that although they WERE being sketchy about wanting to get outta there without having the dog taken or being 'charged' or sued or whatever.

I know the safe smart thing is to get the rabies shot though.

Have the mafia break its legs.

BTW, what kind of assclown offers "he doesn't like bikes" as a thought to someone who's just been bitten by their dog? How does this help anyone? Is it then somehow your fault for riding your bike?

The funny thing about this, is thats probably something my dad would have told me when I was kid. That and "We'll, what did you do to it to deserve to get bit?"

Yeah. I think "are you okay?" would have been a lot nicer than them immediately worrying that their dog needed to be defended in its actions.

Sick, get your a$$ over to the emergency room at your favorite urgent care hospital and have the ER doc look at it. It's not just a question of rabies; there's an infection issue. You can get whatever shots you need there.

I'd recommend locking yourself up in a room during a full moon and keeping a good amount of silver bullets close by, just in case.

Exactly. I have a dog that doesnt like bikes so I stand between the bike and the dog whenever I see a bike approaching.

I think this is how my mom felt when my dog just peed near her couch two hours ago :)

Definitely get the tet booster, most people get them every 5ish years anyway - its a pretty standard shot. You may also want to get some antibiotics to ward off infection.

Got bit on the hand by a dog once and within a day half my hand was a horrible reddish/purple color and hot to the touch due to infection, but the AB's beat it off not long after. Dog mouths are pretty nasty and full of bacteria and ****, risk of infection even with the rubbing alcohol and neosporin is high.

As for rabies, chances are quite unlikely, but if you know these women or where they live you may want to visit them and ask for documented proof of vaccination and such, just to make sure. If you have no way of contacting them and don't know them, just consult with a doctor and follow his advice. Not sure if rabies is something that can be just looked out for and then the shots given if you start displaying signs, or if it needs to be killed off now.

Lots joking to be had here, but animal bites of any kind can be serious if left untreated. Get it checked out fully. :)

Thanks tex. I got the tetanus shot. Couldn't verify rabies. Safe thing to do is get rabies shot, but two doctor friends agree that it's a one in a million chance and getting the shots give me just as good a chance of dying from a reaction.

I'm low percentage because it was a pitbull who was threatened by a bike, considered a provoked attack from a normally aggressive breed. It had owners who said it had shots. Plus it appeared healthy and docile other than the moment it went for my leg. Lol. Also chance of rabies infection is 90% lower if bitten on the leg.

So, yeah... Skipping the rabies shot.

If it does show rabies symptoms, its almost 100 percent fatal and too late so oh well. Just gotta figure I have a higher chance of dying crossing the street.

I would have done a u turn on my bike and ran over the dog, then rode over the ugly looking women...

This is assuming you were on a mountain bike with shock absorbers so as to make the encounter comfortable.
