Friday Morning Discussion: If Fins start out 0-4 under Sparano...

Discussion in 'Miami Dolphins Forum' started by MonstBlitz, Aug 19, 2011.

What would you do with Sparano if Phins started 0-4?

  1. Can him. See what Nolan can do.

    23.5%
  2. Wait until mathematically eliminated. Then fire him.

    19.1%
  3. Give him the whole season, no matter what.

    57.4%

You're the one that said that they would agree with you.......none of the rest of us.

DJ there is no reason for us to be like this.

You do know I am one of your biggest supporters of the "New Orange Bowl" idea, right ?

I'm trying to put forth a olive branch, will you take it ?

Padre, this may be a most negative post, I agree but the question still stands. IF the team goes 0-4 going into the BYE, do you seriously think Sparano WILL NOT BE FIRED ? Not me. This team is 0-4 going into the bye I am fairly confident we can all say bye bye to Tony Sparano. As negative or critical as it may seem it is a possible reality. Ross cannot afford too many more half empty stadiums in Miam Gardens.

You know as well as I do. When times are bad, someone is going to be beheaded. I do not wish Sparano this type of situation, I like the guy but again, its a distinct possibility that after the bye, Sparano just may be unemployed.

Am I missing something on J.J. Watt? I thought he was just a down lineman. I thought Mario Williams and Brooks Reed would be the guys on the outside?

As for Reggie, I believe like you that you get into situations where either Brooks Reed or MAYBE even Mario Williams will have to cover Reggie Bush, or at the very least just come up and tackle him, and those are guys I think he could make look silly in space. And on top of that, the way we use Reggie, if it's anything like the way the Saints used him, you put decision-making pressure on the safeties. It's hard to say what the hell is going on at safety for them. They have Glover Quin listed as a strong safety and he played 1000+ snaps as a CB last year. I don't know if they're planning on starting Danieal Manning or what, at free safety. Either way I like the pressure Bush can put on their decision-making, with Quin being new to the position, and Manning being new to the defense.

I can't argue that there are some ridiculous people out there. I thought you were talking about folks who debate the stuff on this board. Fair enough. I of course am pulling for Sparano to turn things around as you are. If he showed the ability to be a very good NFL coach that would be more ideal than having to find somebody else.

Back on topic, I voted to can him when mathematically eliminated but over the past few minutes I've kind of changed my mind on that. I don't see the point in fooling with Nolan as interim coach so they might as well keep him all season if this terrible scenario transpires.

No. Not "just because." We think it will be better because it was the unit's first year under Nolan. They'll undoubtedly be more comfortable with the system this year. We think the unit will be better because both Vontae and Smith are going into their 3rd years. We think the unit will be better because we have Jared Odrick back and looking good thus far, giving us one of the most talented and deep lines in all of the NFL. Koa Misi is no longer a rookie. We added JT and dropped Quentin Moses. Many think the addition of Burnett over Crowder will be a plus.

But yeah, "just because." Very fair summary of the reasoning of those who disagree with you.

I hadn't really followed Houston much this offseason. I just figured they were using Watt at OLB. But yeah, looks like they're going to play him at LDE. I'm a little surprised by that. Either way, they've got a rookie learning a new position. And, having missed out on the Nmandi sweepstakes, their secondary is still really suspect.

Why? That'd be like using Odrick at OLB.

Personally I'd like to see a 3-4 DL where Odrick and Watt were each at an end spot though. Talk about a line with non-stop motors.

As far as your explanations, first, saying that guys who might have overproduced last year come down to Earth or that we might face injuries is a critique you can make of any team, including the four we play first. Right now, we don't have any injuries. Your logic borders really close on suggesting that we should never feel good about any unit, just because. As far as your substantive points, we're not counting on Odrick. He's a backup. But thus far, he's played pretty damn well, both in practice and in our one preseason game. As far as Soliai is concerned, he looked fine to me in the Falcons game, even with our trouble against the run on that second drive. The guy is still playing for a contract at this point. I wouldn't expect that much drop off. He's gotten consistently better since we drafted him. Wake might come down to Earth a bit, but I would think that more likely because offenses compensate for him. And, as they do that, it should open up opportunities for other players, like Taylor, Dansby, Odrick, and Misi. He's not the only star on this defense.

And, with that, I'm done. There's no point in continuing to argue with you. If you're so down and dug in that you honestly think "well, an injury might happen" is a valid reason for your pessimism, nothing I say is going to change that. I've made my points for the rest of the people on here. They can make up their own minds. I think calling 60% odds that we go 0-4 "generous" pretty much speaks for itself.

I always thought of him as more of an OLB than DE in the 3-4. He's pushing 290, but I'll be interested to see how he holds up at end.

It's the attempt at a dictatorship of positivity on this board. You can't possibly say anything that might happen from the glass-halfway point downward without getting an editorial on your opinion, not on the topic itself from the puppydogs-and-rainbows fanboys.

''As for defense, all the optimists think the D will get better, just because.''

Your insulting my intelligence here but were good man..I think there is just a big philosophical difference on what level of criticism is fair at this point..

MB, if you really want to make this board go nuts and get a 1000 page thread going, pose the question and poll on: "If Henne continues too play poorly for the rest of the pre-season, what are the chances that we could see Matt Moore as our opening day starter?" Watch out!!:escape:

As to your point: I would not make the switch. Best to just play it out and let the chips fall where they may. Nolan hasn't proven anything as a head coach, except that he is a bad one. There would be no point to make that switch to just win a few more games when we would really have no shot at the playoffs, much less a championship or Superbowl. Also as DD said, if we did 0-4, he would be part of the problem. I also think he's too stoic to be a HC. He just does not seem like a motivator and a guy whom would command respect as a HC. Those are usually the type of guys whom can come in mid-season and instill some confidence, but still......there would be no real benefit to the team, long or short term, to make the switch.

Wow! Now that was refreshing... an absolute torrent of angst, negativity, and blame storming for no apparent reason whatsoever!...

Now, just what in the name of pluperfect hell was the purpose of this thread in the first place?

Why was it most of us left the "other" board some four years ago?

DJ can't you see I feel the same way when I read some of the "eternal optimists" posts ?

I'm glad you can see the merits of not snidely dismissing posters like a moderator did just above your post. I can't believe that person is a moderator with that kind of attitude. Mods are supposed to be impartial and fair, and not dismissive of others just because someone doesn't agree with them.

Some of us "eternal optimists" are actually being objective. It's not very difficult to see this team has talent (Henne included). We have a great DC. Daboll is proving to be a serious upgrade in the OC department, just like many of us thought he would.

However, you don't seem to have any objectivity; you don't really support your complaining with meat & potato arguments. You seem to prefer complaining about how "horrible we are" until the team proves you wrong. There's nothing objective about that.

The difference between what you do and what most of the "eternal optimists" do------- the optimists make an effort to support their beliefs, where as you clutter the board with rant after rant. Is anyone going around shouting "Miami's awesome!! We're the best team in the league!! No one's stopping us!! 14-2 baby and picking 32nd next year!!! Hoorah!!!"? Find me one poster doing that and I'll kiss your feet.

Not bumping this thread to say "I told you so" because I honestly didn't think we would go 0-4 when I posed this question.

Now that we're 1 very losable game away from 0-4, coming off an embarrassing loss to the Browns anybody want to change their mind?

Even though I originally voted for fire him, I'm kind of at the mindset of let him finish it out. As some pointed out in this thread, the potential for an artificial bump in production from promoting a coordinator to head coach wouldn't be worth the loss of draft pick slot. Let's just let Sparano coach us into a top 5 pick.

But he should be fired immediately after the regular season or maybe even with 1 or 2 games left just so we can start the coaching search with no nonsense.

It is not an if or should...

Start off 0-4 and Sparano WILL be fired. Makes sense to fire him after the game and go into the bye week with new leadership in place.

This game brings new meaning to the whole "Win or go home." saying. If Miami loses, which they will, Sparano will be going home to New Haven. Enjoy the hometown pizza Tony. Goodbye moron.
