I pity the team that gives that guy 3/40.....watch it be NY.....he is primed for a big drop off, after/if he leaves that lineup....

But Ortiz has still be producting where Matsui, Abreu and Guerrero slipped. I'd be shocked if Ortiz got lower than 8 million even with the DH market gone.

As good? I mean this is all hypothetical....I guess it will be answered IF he leaves Boston...

One thing I will say Ortiz has always proven people wrong....I like him...

Depends on the ball park but I think he'd be better playing 81 games at Yankee Stadium. Obviously his numbers would take a big hit if he were playing in Oakland or Seattle. But Boston or New York with the way the parks and line ups are are probably the best fit for him but I could see him helping out any line up.

Word is Youkilis to the DL with Lavarnway to be called up, probably to simply DH until Ortiz is ready to come back, then he'd be sent down for Drew Sutton, I'd guess.

Official reason is a sore back but just looking at him he hasn't been healthy all year. It seems like every night he's limping or holding a different body part so the rest will do him good. Hence why I think he'll be the full time DH shortly, he just can't stay healthy because of the way he plays in the field.

Which is my theory on Dustin too, I would even venture to say Dustin plays harder than Youk.....Youk fouls a crap load of balls off himself too...

Will Middlebrooks has been promoted to Triple A. Perhaps he'll be called up on 9/1 when rosters expand? I'm probably getting way ahead of myself but he's been doing extremely well in Double A this year and is the 3B of the future for the Sox. Definitely the Sox best all around position prospect in the minors.

Wow Middlebrooks has really moved fast, I never thought of him as this good probably because he was hurt. I am glad that Youk is on the DL otherwise he keeps trying to play hurt, we don't need him at the moment we are going to make the playoffs. I just realized we still have Lars Anderson, and he could be doing worse.

I'd be shocked if Anderson is in the organization by the end of Spring Training. He's obviously blocked at 1B and doesn't hit for enough power to be a DH. It's too bad because he still gets on base at a pretty good clip but the power just never came. He did work hard at becoming at the very least an average defensive 1B too.

I can't see why he'd leave. He has a very good relationship with the owner, was born and raised in Boston and is in charge of a team that's 2nd to only the Yankees in terms of just about everything. Going to Chicago would be a step down in my opinion. Plus I can definitely see Theo getting promoted to a position like Club President or something like that in the very near future. It's all a moot point though as he's signed to a contract for a few years so if the Cubs wanted Theo, the Sox would have to let him go. I just think it's a very slow news day and guys like Buster and Gammons need to talk about something to kill time.

If BeanTown would allow him to interview and grant him a release I could see he or Cashman and their natural EGO's want to head to CHICAGO CUBS and reverse the curse.....the one that does that will bea HUGE hero. I can easily see both of these men chomping at the bit, and willingly leaving the grind that NYY and BOS ask of them.

that is the thing too, Chicago is like candyland compared to NY, and BOS.....but while it isnt the pressure-cooker those cities are.....I would think they would come with HUGE expectations as well....it would be give and take I think..

Yes I have Twitter but I'm not very interesting on it as I rarely post anything. I just have it to keep up with MLB news/rumors etc.

I don't see why either Theo or Cashman would leave to go to the Cubs though. At best it would be a sideways move and possibly a slight step down. I think Cashman, of the two, would be more likely to go only because I don't see him having the full authority that Theo has in Boston as the Tampa Brass at times have undercut Cashman and made decisions he wouldn't have made (i.e. Soriano).

And you talk about the grind of NYY and BOS well Chicago isn't much better in terms of the craziness that comes with the job. The media and fans and pressure is just as bad.

I don't know I think it's a moot point really for Theo as he's still under contract and can't really see how or why John Henry would grant him his release.

Sure, but basically new owner, new money, I honestly think a MAJORITY of the GM's currently in baseball would love the challenge of being THE GM that reversed the curse. On one hand, its HUGE expectations, on the other, its 100yrs of same ol failure. Many have to perceive that (including Cashman and Theo) as a win/win natural ego thrill ride.

Theo would be In the HALL OF FAME while still being a GM, if he adds CUBS to his RSOX reverse the curse resume!

I can easily see both, and Theo has motovation as I posted on his side equally. Cubs and Sox reverse the curse championships...what a challenge. What an accomplishment- greatest GM ever in history of baseball - once done.

Chicago is a pretty tough city though. While it might not be on the level of New York or Boston it's pretty close. If New York and Boston are in the top tier of crazy fan bases than Chicago and Philly would be a close 2nd.

Oh definitely but I just don't see it, besides from the he's still under contract thing Theo grew up in Boston, he has his dream job for his home town team, makes very good money and I could absolutely see him getting promoted in the next few years as Henry absolutely loves him. With the Cubs any GM that comes in has to pretty much rebuild the team which is going to take at least 3 or 4 years as the team doesn't have a great farm system and has a lot of high priced veterans under long term contracts.

Precedent exists for HOMETOWN boys to accomplish that goal with the dreamjob and (boredom or feeling unchallenged) ultimately moving on (right or wrong reasons) - and chasing the next rush. If they let him interview, I think the dominoes fall.

This is interesting indeed...I see but sides equally (BDH and Fink)....bad example but look at Parcells...guys with the drive they have like challenges...but as Fink said he has it made here...

While Henry loves him, if Theo came to him and said I want to do this, he would let him go IMO...

If the Sox let Theo interview it would make things extremely interesting for sure.

It would be interesting to see what the Red Sox would get back for compensation if Theo were to leave. The A's would have gotten Kevin Youkilis from the Sox if Beane decided to take the GM job, but he utlimately passed because of his family in Oakland. But right now any real discussions about it are premature.

I don't know but I thought last night was the perfect time to take him out. He was pitching well but with him things can come undone very quickly (same with Wakefield but Francona seems to stick with him a little longer at times). The Sox had a big lead with a rest pen, might as well take him out a batter or two too early than too late to give him something to build on.

It was nice to see the Sox return to Texas and beat them up a little. Now it was quiet down the media and fans who are so fearful of the Rangers. Yes they're a good team but the team the Rangers beat in the first three games in April isn't close to being the same team they faced this week. It's just too bad Oakland couldn't hold a 6 run lead or they would have swept the Yankees and the Sox would have been 2 games up.

With the 40 man rosters set to expand on Thursday, September 1st and looking at the 40 man right now including the guys on the DL the Sox will probably call up either between 10 to 11 guys for the stretch run. You obviously see Jenks, Atchison, Bowden (who's up right now anyway), Weiland, Doubront, and Tazawa as the pitchers. As for position players you have Youkilis, Drew, Lavarnway, Drew Sutton and I'd guess they would call up Jose Iglesias as a late game defensive replacement and possibly Lars Anderson just because. With Lavarnway up that probably means Luis Exposito won't be called up since it's rare teams call up 4 catchers in September. Kalish would be called up if he didn't reinjure himself the other day so the Sox might just want to shut him down now. So that leaves only Oscar Tejeda and Stolmy Pimental as guys they have zero chance of being called up.

Nice win last night for the Sox. The biggest thing no one will talk about is Beckett going back out for the 7th and getting a 1-2-3 inning. Rubber game tonight, but like last series all the Sox really needed to do was avoid being swept which they did. On paper it looks like a mis-match but Burnett is due to pitch well sooner or later and I wouldn't be shocked to see him pitch 7 innings of 2 run ball.

Sox also made a deal to get 1B/3B/COF Conor Jackson from Oakland for RHRP Jason Rice (27 year old non prospect). Kind of an eh deal. Jackson is probably a small upgrade over McDonald at the plate but not as good defensively. But the Sox needed to do something. Jackson hasn't been good since 2009 when he got hay fever and hasn't been the same player since. Moving out of Oakland's home ballpark might help a bit too.

Perhaps I'm trying a reverse jinx but Burnett has the stuff to shut down a good offensive team. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pitch well tonight. Just like I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the showers by the 4th inning.
