I don't think Henne is a "franchise QB" but that is a vague term and I think there are only 5-6 franchise QBs, at least by my definition. But you don't need a true franchise QB to win in this league if you have a good OL, a solid running game and a good defense. It's fine to look for an upgrade on a 27 yr old QB coming off that kind of season, but I'd then be looking for a guy to probably sit over the next 2-3 years behind Henne (who hopefully continues to improve) instead of someone to hand the job to as a rookie.

Brees did blossom in his 3rd year as a starter (4th year overall), although I disagree that he was better than Henne in his 3rd year overall. By the numbers, he was considerably worse and his record was worse too. Brees' 4th year was also Gates' breakout year and that was a team with a very good OL, the league's best RB, who was backed up by a very good RB in Michael Turner. A pretty nice environment for a developing QB. That was also a pretty QB-friendly offense, as evidenced by Rivers' success there too (although Rivers is very good in his own right). Brees' success in NO shows that he wasn't just a product of the system in SD, although I think that Saints offense is pretty QB-friendly too.

Regardless of system, I think we can both agree that some QB's are better than others and simply because a QB is successful in a aprticular system (like Kyle Orton) there have to be other objective terms to figure out if the guy should be your long term starter.

For example, let's stay with Orton. Denver is likely to be pretty bad. Do you think they would pass on Luck if they had #1 pick? Or Barkley presumably if they had the 2nd pick?

Same thing with the Dolphins. Say we had a ton of injuries on defense and the defense colapses. Henne improves to roughly Orton numbers but he can;t overcome the decimated defense and we get the #1 or #2 pick. Who you taking?

I don't think its possible to have a QB with a rating in the high 80s, yet end up with the #1 pick. But for discussions sake, yes, I would take Luck and re-sign Henne as well.

In regards to Denver, they cannot take any QBs with a first round pick until they give Tebow playing time.

I call nonsense on this. Elway and Fox had nothing to do with drafting Tebow and have nothing invested in him. Andrew Luck would make people forget about Tim Tebow real quick

No he wouldn't. People love Tebow. Literally. Its like a cult. No way Pat Bowlen throws that away.

Why wouldn't people love Andrew Luck?

Sure, I'd take Luck. But I wouldn't hand him the starting job as a rookie. I'd sit him behind Henne much like SD did with Rivers. If Henne continues to improve and play well, I'd probably stay with him much like SD did with Brees. If he falters, I'd hand the ball to Luck. At some point, I'd trade one of them.

If the luck and opportunities change for Henne as discussed in my previous post, it wouldn't really take that much improvement from him to start looking like a franchise QB by the numbers.

For example, if he can complete just one extra pass each game (roughly one out of 33 attempts), his completion percentage would go up to 64.4%. If he keeps his same 11 yards per completion, his QBR would go up from that theoretical 87.5 to 91.5. If instead of 11 yards per completion his placement improves enough to allow his receivers to get just an extra half yard of YAC, his QBR would go up to 92.8. If instead of 1 TD for every 4.6 red zone attempts he gets one for every 4.2 attempts, he'd have another 2 TD passes which would kick his rating up from 92.8 to 94.2. The point is that small improvements can make a big difference in his numbers and the perception of his play. If he got up to a QBR of 94.2 in his 4th year, would you consider him a potential franchise QB?

People would love him. Just not nearly as much as Tim Tebow.

But it is enough love to sell tickets while he becomes the next Peyton Manning (or Tim Couch)

Come on, let's get real here. We have a HC the owner doesnt want, and a QB the HC doesnt want. Real recipe for success right there.

No joke! Guarantee Bowlen keeps Tebow as long as possible. There would be riots if he were traded.

Not even kidding a little bit.
