I'm glad you got something out of it Rafi, and I agree, that is how things work.

Favre can take pictures of his johnson and send it to female reporters, and it is still "ohh..Brett Favre!!!"

    That is the halo effect.

I actually think I meant to post that in another thread, but I can't remember which one. LOL I've got a ton of things to do today, but I'm spending half of my time thinking about the game and consequently doing everything poorly.

Other great exchange in that movie...

"You know, I myself dabbled in pacifism at one point. Not in 'nam, of course."

    "He's got emotional problems, man!"

    "You mean, beyond pacifism?"

Yeah, I'll probably be alternating between "the sky is falling" and "maybe we'll turn the corner and win the Superbowl".

I think being a sports fan of a struggling team makes you bi-polar.

Same here, but I have things to do tomorrow and that means no beer runs this evening, so I'm brewing a huge lot of Tea for the game.

I think the halo effect is well worth a discussion, but like most things that give people edges, it will be ignored.

Meh..... It's the first preseason game so my expectations aren't very high. I just want to get out of this thing with no injuries.

It's certainly an interesting concept to apply the halo effect to sports fandom, but you'd need to show some very specific examples and instances (and possibly make those who provided them mighty angry). And in the case of Chad Henne, it's actually easier to apply the halo effect to the supporters instead of the doubters.

JT comes to mind, people tend to overlook the fact he said the same things Ricky W said after the season was over.

As for Henne, imo what is happening is fans REALLY want to like him, but he has done nothing but more or less disappoint, if he is looked at objectively he is a 3rd yr Qb who has had mediocre results, however emotions get so intertwined (the want him to succeed thing) that objectivity in re Henne is just not possible.

The only way the lad gets the Halo Effect is by being wildly successful enough to stifle criticism

That's #1 Killer. I'm hoping that the telecast of the game is the game. So many pre-season games forget the game, and go into meaningless interviews and assorted nonsense.

I want to see Jimmy Wilson, Clay, Gates, and Hilliard, to name a few. If Hilliard can play FB, and Clay pans out, I can't see Polite being on the roster.

I disagree. Most supporters always qualify by saying they agree he played less than adequate but they are hopeful that he can turn it around based on what they've seen. Evidence to support my thesis:

Henne contacted Daboll during the lockout and got the playbook. Even though he was trying to get better, and a number of teams did the same thing, people were on this board crying about it.

Henne's mother's letter. He didn't have anything to do with the letter, but he got railed here for it.

Orton Chant saga. They booed Henne at a free practice and some here got mad at Henne for saying it affected him. Fans got praised for going to a practice and booing a player under contract because of who they booed.

In this offseason, there's more evidence that doubters are much more negative about his whole being than supporters are positive about his whole being. Check any media post about Henne. Read the comments.

Actually, you are proving my thesis, at least partially. Without taking any position on either side of the fence (so no strawmen, please), the Henne supporters need anecdotal or conjectural evidence to support their stance. The fact that Henne called Daboll or organized team activities might certainly prove benefitial (or it might not make any difference whatsoever), but in the grand scheme of all things quarterback it's a drop in the bucket that was Chad Henne's 2010 season. Now, I certainly agree that there's also some Henne doubters who construct every happenstance as a negative reflection, but contrary to the supporting stance, the doubting stance needs no further evidence, anecdotal or conjectural; it has a whole season of pretty darn good evidence. This doesn't necessarily imply that one side's wrong and the other side is right but it means that one side's more likely to encounter the halo effect as it has to rely on evidence that is by its very nature inconclusive.

The halo effect can be broken down to say you can't give credit where credit is due, and you can give criticism where it isn't warranted. Or, you can give credit undeserved and do not give due criticism. This stemming from one aspect of their life unrelated to the matter at hand. Clearly some doubters give criticism in unwarranted areas simply because they didn't like his 2010 season. And you paint the 2010 season as if everyone shares your opinion on his play.

I disagree with this. I don't see the evidence on either side to be just anecdotal. The doubter's side seems to primarily focus on the outcome or a few negative stats and place most or all of the blame on Henne. The evidence is fact based, but also ignores many other facts. The supportive side seems to look at Henne as part of a whole and think he could be a franchise guy given the right circumstances. But the evidence they use is just as factual and stat based as the doubter's side. For the record, I'm not sure which camp, I fall in. I have always said that I did not think Henne would be a franchise QB, but I have also said that the situation is the primary problem with our offensive woes. I see Henne as talented as many of the QBs others are touting as good. I think Henne our best option for this year and our best option to be in a position to get a franchise QB in the future.

No I paint it as if objective, consensus-based criteria such as rating, YPA or TD/INT can effectively sustain that position whereas there's little to no factual criteria that sustains the opposing point of view. See:

No, it's really not because even the most vocal "supporters" usually don't argue that Chad Henne has been a good NFL QB up to this point. Their argument is a very different one, namely that Henne could be a good QB if certain criteria were met. And that's where the whole argument becomes anecdotal and conjectural. If I, for instance, argue that Henne was a bad NFL QB, then I can back this up with numbers that are generally considered significant by wide consensus and with actual throws, plays, mistakes from his NFL career. If you, on the other hand, claim that Henne could be an effective QB under a new OC or in a different system or when given more speed or time or patience, then you might well be right, but you cannot back it up. It's pure conjecture. In some cases, it might be educated conjecture, but conjecture it remains. You can't prove your point.

And that's exactly where the halo effect comes into play. If you're operating under the assumption that Henne could be a good player if only certain other areas were improved, then you become susceptible to halo thinking (not meaning "you" as in "you specifically", by the way). Daboll? Yay, new OC is good for Henne! Bush? Yay, speed is good for Henne! Drafting Pouncey? Yay, interior OL help is good for Henne! The lockout? Yay, having to take charge of team activities is good for Henne! I don't think I've ever read more diverse and occasionally mysterious reasons why a player will/might/could improve than I've read this offseason in the case of Chad Henne.

Add to that the fact that you're also not leaving much room for being wrong. Say Henne doesn't improve under Daboll. Henne's fault? Daboll's fault like it was Henning's and Lee's fault? Your fault? If I'm saying that Henne is a bad NFL QB based solely on what I've seen so far from him as an NFL QB I'm leaving the door wide open for him to step up and perform like a top 15 QB. Throw significantly more TDs than INTs, get to an 85 rating and preferably finish with a 7+ AVG and I'll call you a decent NFL QB. I doubt that based on empirical data. But I'm not negating that possibility a priori by saying that Henne could never be a good NFL QB like many supports negate the other possibility by saying that he could if only this and that criteria was somehow met.

I don't quite see how two additional starters each playing for 3-5 snaps would have been significantly closer to something that mattered. This game was No Matter Central from the getgo. Aren't you excited?

would have liked to see two guys that will make up almost half of the focus on offense be involved for a couple of series with their quarterback. Especially for a team that has an offense to learn.
