Interesting, they added Ellis and Haynesworth their Dline is now quite deep with: Mike Wright Wilfork Ellis Haynesworth Brace Interesting, and they passed on Matt Roth, which sort of tells us they will play more base 4-3? With Cunningham maybe putting a hand in the dirt at RDE?
They'll be multiple. More Nickel than anything. That's what their acquisitions and draft is trending toward to.
If you really look at it, they're building that defense up the same way they built it when they won the SBs. Be stout up front, provide pass rush up front and then play tons of nickel and dime.
I'm sure, BB has had 3 seasons since his core defensive players sort of disbanded (Bruschi retired, Seymour traded etc) so he has his guys by now, my only real surprise over it is the lack of a proven passrusher, or even a really good prospect to get after the passer from base formations. There was a notion floating around the NFL last yr that the 4-3 was better at stopping the run then the 3-4 as you have an extra, larger Dlineman tackling running backs over a smaller Linebacker, it was floated by Clayton and semi debunked, but BB is typically ahead of the curve in the NFL and I suspect that is what we are seeing in NE.
Yeah they're lacking a proven guy but I think they have a nice set of guys who could provide pass rush, again like the Super Bowl years. I don't know about all that. It comes down to personnel and coaching IMO.
Well, what does stand out is they now have DT's who can get up the field, Haynesworth and Wright, which makes our move of Carey to RG make more sense imvho, they look like they can collapse the pocket from the inside out now. Well, just looking at the AFCE, Miami and the NYJ typically like to run the ball so adding these guys means they can have the best of both worlds, at least that is the way I see it. Rook Pouncey is in for a loong night when we open with the Patriots on MNF, Wilfork, Wright, Haynesworth, this is one of the reasons why I'd to see Richie I play Center and Pouncey LG.
You can bet money Haynesworth will play the 5 technique some. He did it in Tennessee with a lot of success. Yeah but that's what they've always done. They've always try to get versatile guys so they can be multiple.
BB unlike Parcells has learned to evolve with the game. BB recognizes its became a pass first league so building a DL that can thrive with an extra DB on the field rather than a LB takes away from a potentially bad matchup, The man truely "gets it" and is nothing less than brilliant.
that is interesting. As for BB, we shall see Fin-O, passing league but you have to stop the run in the playoffs and betting heavily on Fat Albert can easily blow up in his face.
This is one of the reasons why I was in favor of the 4-3, as teams make that switch to the 3-4 the talent pool becomes much deeper, and it speaks volumes that the Redskins were more then willing to jettison Fat Albert and Daniels in order to run the 3-4, rather then adjust their thinking and use what they already have.
The Patriots and BB have not shown me that they can evolve their defense the last few years. If anything, I lean towards the 3-4 given the success the Steelers and Ravens have had. with our cornerbacks getting better (hopefully), all we need is our young safeties, Clemons and Carroll, to take another step.
They basically assembled a Defensive Line from spare parts cast off from other teams who still can play. All of this "BB is the smartest coach in..." to me nonsense, it is common sense, as more teams switch to one philosophy, the opposite philosophy then has a deeper, and cheaper, talent pool to pick through. That goes back the peculiar idiosyncrasies of NFL Head Coaches..they want THEIR system and do not care what they currently have, same with Coordinators. Other thing to keep in mind is they passed on passrushers in the Draft as they claimed to have a lot of faith in Jermaine Cunningham, run to see how that pans out as he and Ninkovich were both good college DE's.
John Clayton It's easy to see why Shaun Ellis went to NE. Jets offered him $910,000 on a one-year. Patriots offered him $4 million and $1 M incentives.
Everyone you quoted is the head coach of an NFL franchise and not just a bunch of guys posting on a message board, right? Wow, great comparison. Let me put it simple so a Jet fan can understand. As the coach, you set an example. You show class. It you can't wish a player who's given the organization over 10 years of consistent service well, you STFU. Then again, it's Rex Ryan and the Jets. Class and that franchise aren't within a country mile of one another.
Don't know how significant this is, but saw this on ESPN and thought I post it here: http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/6846897/shaun-ellis-not-ready-new-england-patriots-put-pup-list
Jets are really up a creek now. They're going to have to rely on a rookie to hold down that position.
There isn't really much evolution with this move. All it really tells me is that Belichick can't draft for **** now that Pioli is gone.
I do agree with the fact that BB isn't great in the draft, but that has never been his forte. He will find and get the best out of the worst players tho, so the Ellis, Haynesworth and Wilfork line could be deadly.
Interesting, Sharper is a much different player from Harrison though, the last older S he brought in, Hill was kind of bad in Denver last yr.
Really weird to me Alen, and says what they think of Darius Butler, he will be lucky to stick this yr. Hearing they are going to look at "TJ Whosyourdaddy" and Johnson and Haynesworth may be on the bubble. If Fat Albert is not participating fully in the drills and conditioning, I can easily see them cutting him and the sort of buzz I've heard about Chad Johnson is he is getting no seperation.
And so it begins, he started on Saturday as well, also have heard B Tate is in roster trouble as well.
