The field was hot, the weather was dry, and the players were rested and ready to go. After a very embarrassing practice coming from the fans at Sun Life Stadium, it seemed as if the players, especially Henne, were ready to prove a point to Dolfans around the country, and they did just that. The offense played with the swagger and the energy that we all have been waiting for since the start of camp, and one player in particular rose from the rest which ended up in cheers from the 200+ fans in Davie, Florida. Let's take a look at how camp went on Aug, 3rd.

    FADE AND SLANT ROUTES:
The offense was placed on the 15 yard line against a 7 man defense, and wideouts were to only run slant routes and fades.
    QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne went 5/7 on this drill with 3 TD’s. He pump faked and threw pin point passes to Julius Pruitt and Davone Bess. So far so good for Henne.
Tom Brandstater: TB didn’t see much playing time during this drill as he only threw two passes, both were completed.
Pat Devlin:On Monday night Devlin played like an undrafted free agent, but it looked like the resting day helped him out, but only slightly. During the drill, Devlin threw 2 TD’s but unfortunately he had 2 interceptions and 3 incomplete passes.
    7 on 7:
Last time up, Henne had problems with the 7 on 7 by constantly throwing check downs and int’s. Fortunately "Check down Chad" was not in attendance today.
    QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne started out the drill throwing a 20-yard strike to Brandon Marshall down the middle of the field, and later on threw a 15-yard TD to Davone Bess on a slant route. He did however throw a pick in double coverage and had two incomplete passes.
Tom Brandstater: Excelling in this drill before, Brandstater looked to continue on his success during camp. Unfortunately for TB, he completed one pass on a checkdown to Nic Grigsby and had 4 incomplete passes.
Pat Devlin: Devlin didn’t snap many balls during 7 on 7’s throwing only 3 passes, completing 2 of 3.
    WIDE RECEIVERS:
Brandon Marshall: Marshalll received a nice little 20-yard pass from Henne on a post-in. Fans applauded for about 25 seconds which was a great site to see.
Davone Bess: Davone continued his success during camp catching another TD from Henne on a slant route.
Julius Pruitt: Caught 1 pass during this drill coming from Pat Devlin.
    SAFETIES:
Reshad Jones: Jones broke-up a sure TD to Davone Bess in the endzone along with a dropped pick.
Nate Ness: Also had a dropped pick. Punishment was 20 pushups on the hot grass.
    11 on 11:
This was the most anticipating moment of the day. Fans looked to see if Henne could come back from a Monday night practice which had "fans" booing for minutes.
    QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: I was scrolling down my twitter timeline and I noticed that Omar Kelly was not impressed with Henne during 11 on 11, I actually thought he greatly improved from previous practices. Henne went a solid 7/10 with two 30-yard+ passes, two 20-yard+ passes (one for a touchdown), and three 10-yard+ passes. No matter what O.K said, Henne improved on this drill and played better than his previous practices.
Tom Brandstater: T.B went 2/5 with a 40-yard bolt to Marlon Moore, which would have resulted in a TD.
Pat Devlin: Devlin had a good drill throwing 3/5 passes with one 10-yard pass and two 20-yard passes.
    WIDE RECEIVERS:
Roberto Wallace: After a very good Monday Night Scrimmage, Wallace was only thrown at once and it was dropped.
Brooks Foster: Very nice 20-yard catch from Pat Devlin.
Brandon Marshall: Thrown at once during the drill and it was dropped once more.
Marlon Moore: Had two good-yardage receptions. One was a 40-yard pass from Tom Brandstater and the other was a 15-yard zipper from Tom Brandstater.
Brian Hartline: Hartline managed to catch 4/4 passes thrown at him during this drill, and finished it off with a touchdown from Chad Henne.
    2-MINUTE DRILL:
The fastest yet most entertaining drill of the day was the 2-minute drill, only Chad Henne and Tom Brandstater participated. Let’s see how they did.
    QUARTERBACKS:
Chad Henne: Henne’s first two plays were incompletions (crowd was irritated, but not for long.) He bounced back with a 15-yard pass to Brian Hartline, who tip toed out of bounds. Following play was an incompletion. Once again, Henne bounced back nicely with one 20-yard pass to Hartline followed by an 8-yard pass to Davone Bess who stepped out of bounds. The next play had the crowd in uproar. Henne soared the ball deep down the left sideline, it looked as if Vontae Davis was going to come up with the pick until Edmund Gates leaped in the air like a frog trying to catch a fly, mossed Davis, and ran it home for a 50 yard TD.
Tom Brandstater: T.B followed up Henne and looked to have the same result, unfortunately it was the opposite. Brandstater was sacked the first play by Jared Odrick,, followed by an icompletion and deflection. However, it seemed as if T.B wasn’t flustered and went for back-to-back 15-yard gainers. However, the last play resulted in an interception from Reshad Jones, which marked the end of a hot Wednesday practice.
    SURPRISE OF THE DAY:
Brian Hartline: Hartline had the greatest practice so far in training camp. He totaled 6 catches for 136 yards and 2 TD’s. Brian received quite a nice ovation from the fans as he walked from the field onto the sidelines for autographs.
    NOTABLE MENTIONS:
Sean Smith: Picked off Tom Brandstater on a deflection from Jimmy Wilson to finish practice.
O-Line: Did a very nice job of protecting the QB by giving him enough time to make accurate throws.
Edmund "Clyde" Gates: Play of the game goes to Gates for his miraculous leap to beat Vonate to the ball and for having enough balance to still run it into the end zone.
P.S: Due to the fact that the players practiced on the farthest field from the stands, I was not able to get very detailed video, which is the reason why no video was posted today, and I apologize for that.

    Great info Deej:

Hope Henne was pissed off by the fans' chanting and actually has a little emotional fire burning in his belly now. I always felt like his lack of emotion was not wholly unrelated to his inability to raise his game at times. All the greats get fired up, imo... Brady, Manning, hell even Pennington for us. Eli Manning is the only stoic Superbowl QB recetnly that I can think of and he's not a 'great'. In fact, Strahan said that the team only finally rallied around him that season when Eli got EMOTIONAL and pissed off over Tiki's comments and showed that FIRE and emotion in a TV interview.

    Great leaders play with passion.

And if booing Henne got some emotion out of him, then so be it. It may have helped him.

So, as for the camp notes you posted..

    The Hopeful:

    - Gates. But can he stay consistent?

    - bess... steady as always

    - Hartline... can he keep it up?

    The Disappointing:

What happened to Roberto Wallace? If he is inconsistent, do we carry him or cut him?

Devlin. I know I shouldn;t expect much, but hope springs eternal and until we have a palatable alternative to Henne I'll be hoping that kissing enough frogs will turn one into a prince for us! Hope this kid develops over the year. I think he has a lot of potential. Wish he were already showing it.

Great stuff DJ. You guys are lucky. You get to go to the practices in the hot Miami sun....while I get to go to work in the hot sands of Khandahar Afghanistan

I've said it before and I'll say it again. With player led practices due to the lockout may have been a blessing in disguise. PLAYERS have had to step up to keep the team on their game until the lockout was resolved and the coaches coming back in to fine tune things.

I have a huge Jets fan on my team here in Khandahar and he's always talking smack to me. I want the 'Phins to utterly DESTROY the JEST'ers this year so I can rub it in his face!!!

I'm sorry..... but Omar's a pompous douche who stuck a silver spoon up his butt.

No matter who the player is, this guy doesn't give a rat's patootie about objectivity. I'd be embarrassed if I ran the Sentinel and this hack was my creme de la creme.

By the way, great stuff Deej...... and thanks to the guy reporting.

Why were they in an uproar? They should be accustomed to guys like Hartline mossing defenders all the time like this b/c he's such a great vertical threat.

Good to see gates making noise though. He could be huge as a flanker.

    excellent report DJ, thx.

Even with a good practice, kinda of sounds like fans have a zero tolerance policy now for Henne.

Only name I've seen mentioned is Allen Barbre. He is a guy from a small school in Missouri that several of us liked in the draft as a sleeper a few years ago. The Packers drafted him and he was there as a backup and part time starter a few years, till we signed him late last season. The fact he is the one being used there could bode well for him getting a backup job on the OL. He is mainly a guard and if he can be a decent part time LT, that would be a nice bonus.

    Wow great report!

It is pretty bad when we have to rely on fans to give us some accurate reporting. Last night I went to bed pretty depressed after struggling through Armandos live blog on the practice, it seems Henne can do nothing right in his eyes. Oh and when a fan called him out on his bias reporting he went and hid like the douche bag he is. In my view the fans are booing the wrong person Omar and Armondo should be booed right out of South Florida!!!!!

I agree with your sentiment on that matter. IMO, the most unbiased and worth reading Sou Fla Dolphins reporter is Jeff Darlington. Others may have different favorites, that's cool, but for me it is Jeff.

Well, that sounds very encouraging. From reading that, it sounds like Henne had a pretty good day.

I think the best part of all of that for me though, was Ness and Jones having to do 20 push ups for dropping INT's. If this D could have capitalized on at least half of their dropped INT's last year this team could have easily won another 3 games probably. They have to do a much better job creating and holding onto turnovers this year.

Can Gates stay consistent...well, the kid is humble and motivated by god..His measurables are off the charts, and hes bigger than people think, this is not a little fast guy, he's a legit 6 foot tall receiver..

Hartline...He's a very smart player, and still very young, 24 years old..As he continues to study the game, for a white dude he's got some nice athleticism, the brains just might get him open more and more, I'd like to see body improvements as he maturates, so he take more hits, and fight for more yardage.

Wallace..unfortunately hes got the body, and the speed, but I don't believe you will find that word consistent in his repertoire because I don't trust the most important element for a receiver to be successful, bad hands..I think he's a flasher..

Devlin..I had him getting drafted, he seemed to have the size and the accuracy to get drafted, but there must be some red flags somewhere that we can't see until the light come on,I'am gonna resrve judgement on this QB until I see his arm strength in a NFL scheme..

let me ask you a Question..Do you think a player of Jakes caliber sitting out and letting these guys battle and work things out could be beneficial for the line as a whole when he returns? almost like, let them come together, and bam, add the premiere tackle in the game to the mix?

In a word...no...I think the Oline is more or less settled and only the CBA stuff is keeping the first team unit off of the field.

yeah...I believe I heard the plan is to have the line set before the first preseason game, then start to prepare for the patriots with that line all thru preseason, so I'am hoping that Jake comes back for that first preseason game.

    DJ...did you write that?

You know...Id be willing to chip in a few bucks to put together so we could hire our own TC reporter and have him do a write up like this for every practice.

Hell...if we get together enough money....maybe we could even somehow get him a press pass to do thephins.com interviews....anything. Its so discouraging trying to follow the Phins through the local media....

What do you all say....lets hire our own beat reporter!!!

No worries with Thor Deej, we know what he is, no rush, just cannot give the Big Fella nothing to do our Mongo no like.

If anything we can put one of the RT candidates at LT and see how they handle it, allowing Colombo to get reps at RT and they have to perform better at RT then Colombo does at RT to beat him out..but I suspect no way Sparano lets' the Paisan lose that competition.
