IF the Dolphins were trying to play a game where they waited out the Broncos and Orton, which I don't really think they were, they were doing it wrong. I think Mike Klis has it right. The Dolphins inquired about Orton, the Broncos responded the same way they did with all the teams that inquired, by giving them permission to talk to Orton about a contract, and that is where it died. Orton wanted a commitment, the Dolphins got cold feet, it fell apart and never got resuscitated.
So you consider Orton asking for 9 mill a year and us saying, alright then take care bye bye, cold feet?, or the broncos did ask for a 2nd round pick and a player?, either way, the right move imo was made, which was not to make it.
According to Mike Klis, the Dolphins and Orton were "close" on an agreement for a restructured contract last Tuesday night. Then the Dolphins had second thoughts. So yes, I call that cold feet. You keep factoring in the draft compensation and whatnot but I really don't think there's any evidence that it proceeded that far.
I like how this starts with a big IF, and the qualification that you don't really think the Phins were doing this, only to go on say that Ireland got "cold feet". Which is it? I think you add the qualification so you can continue to bash Ireland with unfounded rumors. Pretty sad, but consistent.
Ireland can be bashed on many things that are concrete, including his handling of the QB position irrespective of Orton. And CK is merely relaying what a Broncos beat writer reported. It's possible the ebat writer was wrong but what does that have to do with CK?
There is only one single way this was the right move. That whoever plays QB for the Dolphins this year or next, becomes a very good QB and leads the Dolphins deep into the playoffs with at least a strong contending chance at a SB run. Otherwise, if we waste a very good defense in it's prime and finish 7-9 or 9-7, or even if they eek into the playoffs with poor QB play and get blitzed the first game, it was NOT a good move. Personally, given that the average starting NFL QB gets paid about $10 Million, I would not have had a problem trading for Orton and paying him that the next few years. I suspect they could have made it a conditional deal and if he plays well it turns into a 3rd. I have no issue with that. I am very skeptical of Henne improving all-of-a-sudden. But, I will more than happily be wrong. And, if Orton plays well, if Miami's D is good and the team wastes it, they need to run Mr. Ireland & Sparano out of the country and into a Russian Gulag.
Wrong. The only one single way this was the wrong move is that Kyle Orton becomes a very good QB who leads the Broncos into the playoffs with at least a strong contending chance at a SB run. Come on dude, you're talking about a guy who's never won a playoff game like he's going to come in and we're magically going to become SB favorites. Also, calling BS on you claim that the average starting NFL QB gets paid $10 million a year. Guys like Rivers, Both Mannings, Romo, Roethlisberger and any recent QB who was drafted #1 overall is getting 10 million. But the average guys are anywhere between 3-7. Orton wanted elite money for mediocre to average talent.
Well, to me the submarine has locked all of the hatches and has begun blowing the ballast tanks and preparing to dive. INOW, season starts in a little over a month, it is Henne v Moore for the Qb position, I'm fine with it, wanted Orton and it did not work out, that is how it goes, milk spilled. Move on.
I don't have a link. Today on SportsNation, Adam Schefter said that the Miami Dolphins never gave a firm offer to the Broncos. He said it was never really that close and it was more agent speak than anything. He said the Dolphins inferred about what it would take and that was it. At which point, Miami was not willing to pony anything up the Broncos said they would think it would take. I wanted Orton, but I'm glad it's over with. It's time to move onto the season with what we have. Chad Henne is the starting QB. Let's hope he goes out there and proves me wrong and leads the team a fine season. Omar Kelly said he had a really great practice today, so that's good to hear. Tomorrow he gets a few more presents he can work with.
