Come on, Barnett. I highly doubt we cut Crowder and really expect to replace him with Stephen Cooper as a starter lol I just find that one a little too impossible.
Maybe they asked him to restructure and he refused. Maybe they asked to take a pay cut, who knows. Either way, I'm not really very surprised, nor do I find myself very disappointed. Smart? Sure. Big plays? Never.
Jesus Christ. You people act as if Crowder was a Pro Bowl LB. This guy didn't do anything while he was here. He has a big motor and that is it. His awareness was horrible. I don't understand the sentimental feelings from everyone. This guy is so over rated it's not even funny. His coverage ablity was weak and he got run over often. We never saw a big play from him the whole time he was here. Fans get addicted to players and they begin to cloud their judgement.
This is like the offseason for KillahP, we have demented clowns running the front office in Dolphins face paint... Objectively, what are we losing in Crowder? I won't miss #52 trying to catch yet another Te or Rb who is running away from him on a crossing route.
Kevin Burnett: 6'3 240 Last season 95 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 FF and doubled channing crowders CAREER interceptions with 2 He is coming in for a visit tonight. Hopefully we sign him. He, next to Dansby would be pretty nasty!!!
That sums up his career here. I liked him comming out of Florida but we can do a lot better. Then again we can do a lot worse but thats the risk you take.
I like Burnett (see my post on the previous page), but I could see why they'd want more than "okay" against the run. Dansby and Burnett would probably be a pretty freakish inside duo in terms of getting pressure on the QB and creating big plays, but the truth is, there'd prolly be a lot of work for the safeties to make sure that no one runs it by them for a nasty home run.
I don't see many teams on our schedule that have that long rush capability, or at least where we need to be worried first and foremost about the running back's home run ability. Houston with Arian Foster, maybe Cleveland with Peyton Hillis, Kansas City and Jamaal Charles, and LeSean McCoy in Philly. That's really about it.
You can laugh when Rex puts him onboard they can do more smackin in the same locker room while they talk about feet.
Burnett made more impact plays last year (6 sacks, 2 FF, 2 INT) than Crowder made in 6 seasons with #Dolphins (2.5 sacks, 1 INT)
I'd never worry too much about the RBs home run ability anyway, as even the great ones in that category aren't likely to break one against you personally. It's just that a combination of Burnett/Dansby would be a pretty high risk, potentially high reward duo. To make use of their talents, you have to rush them quite often and thus become susceptible to screens or delays. The main worry I'd have is that if we get Burnett, we simply don't have a run stuffing LB on the roster. Neither Edds nor Dobbins fit into that category.
Our safeties aren't very comfortable playing deep, so I'd imagine we would keep Bell up closer to the line anyway. Though to be fair, run defense is generally a non-issue to me in the first place.
Like stitch said, I believe they will bring him back as a backup with a backup salary, and sign a better player..it would be what I would do..get it done Irish, address another weakness.
And hence where I could see potential missmatches as you're comitting a lot to the middle of the field and potentially leave your corners and/or FS on an island. Like I said, I like the player, I wouldn't mind at all if we got him and I could definitely see why Mike Noland would be one happy dude. But it doesn't come without its weaknesses.
Not one person on this entire website thought of Crowder as a pro bowl caliber Linebacker! It was you who insisted he was one of the worst Lb's in the entire NFL, which is hogwash. He was an average LB and thats a fact. If they do not sign someone who is an upgrade, his play against the run will be missed. Average or not, when he was in the lineup, the run defense was much better than without him. What I really won't miss about him is his big mouth.
Burnett is one of the smartest linebackers around. Good player. An upgrade from Crowder, who I agree is also smart.
LOL..insanity..ur makin me laugh now schmoot.. Crowder could not hit with impact, crowder could not make plays, not cause fumbles, no sacks, no int's, couldn't cover worth a damn, couldn't change direction, clearly a GM with any talent could find an upgrade..Good move Irish.. Now I know there are some clouded minds..people are calling out Irish for wanting to reduce his salary and make him a backup...lol..
I liked crowders personality, he bleeds for us, and I hope he stays on the team as a backup, but he doesn't belong on this young, fast, physical defensive unit we have, his skillset doesn't fit, we can sign a better player, and it looks as though thats exactly what were doing..Its the right move..
Here's some PFF info on Burnett, based on last year. For 3-4 ILB, he was rated #20 overall, #5 pass rush, #25 run, and #37 coverage on 924 snaps. He also missed 11 tackles, #6 worst. For a better idea vs the run, Jets D Harris was #24, and Pats J Mayo was #26. Crowder was #10, 510 snaps, and 2 missed tackles.
Wait, Salguero says in his article that Crowder was good in coverage ?? Is that the same Crowder we've been watching the last 6 yrs ?? He must have meant Randy Crowder...
Couldn't be any happier No secret I couldn't stand Crowder. That said...I AM THRILLED HE IS GONE AND WE ARE BRINGING IN BURNETT! Talk about a huge upgrade. Crowder was a liability in the pass game. He couldn't cover anyone. He didn't get sacks. He didn't get turnovers. Burnett is everything Crowder was and he is everything Crowder wasn't. HUGE UPGRADE! Our O is still going to be a liability. However, I guess they needed to upgrade the D to further help bail out the O. The Suck for Luck season has started, but the D will not be the reason we suck.
