Ross also thinks we aren't lagging that far behind the Pats and Jets. Either he is an eternal optimist or a delusional mental patient.
IF it's true the Dolphins still have intentions toward Orton then Stephen Ross is blowing it. Coming out and talking about how Kyle Orton really isn't very good and isn't much of an upgrade on Henne if at all is a TERRIBLE idea. The Broncos aren't the only players in this game. Kyle Orton has a lot of say in this as well, and he wants to come back to Denver. In fact I've heard that part of this deal being dead is that Orton wants $6 million a year, with a lot of it guaranteed, which will prove to him that the Dolphins are actually committed to him and not just making him a "stop gap". So with a situation that delicate and with egos involved, what in blue hell does it accomplish for Stephen Ross to go out there blabbing about how the deal is "dead" and how Orton really isn't better than Henne anyway, etc? I don't think this deal is happening. I'm just being honest. I think the Broncos will come to their senses and have Orton start in front of Tebow, but spice Tebow into the offense and have him start at the first sign of trouble (losses). The Dolphins are out-smarting themselves.
I'll be happy if the trade is dead. I didn't want Orton here to begin with. He's not a big enough upgrade to get us to the next level and we do NOT need another season of mediocrity. If Henne proves he can't do it, we need to make a big push to trade up and get Luck, period.
Henne + Zach Miller & Sims Walker (or Braylon Edwards) + Marshall/Bess/Hartline/Fasano would be far superior to: Orton + Marshall/Bess/Hartline/Fasano/bunch of rookies & practice squad players Not only does Scenario A have improved talent and playmaking ability, it also has quality depth that would prevent us from falling apart again due to injuries. Through the first half of 2010, we had playoff hopes alive against the toughest schedule in the NFL prior to injuries saying hello. Time to make a serious effort to neutralize NY hypothetically getting Nnamdi.
is this official now ? , i don´t know if we have the money for Miller + Sims Walker, did anyone heard anything regarding miller though, besides the usual oakland tries hard to resign him i have not heard one word about him, bradshaw also still hasnt signed yet
If NY has the money to hypothetically land Nnamdi after re-signing Holmes (despite having less cap room than us), then I would imagine we should still have room for Miller & Sims Walker...... or at least someone of value at WR and/or TE.
CK made a good point in a different thread: Sometimes, you have to watch out for things not to drag over to the next season. In the last two games of 2010, after keeping us pretty much alive for a whole season, the defense flat out gave up, surrendering a whoppin' 72 points. If the offense doesn't start to take care of their side of the business eventually, then you run the danger that the defense won't hold up for 14 games yet again. Remember when in 2006 we ran a top 5 defense under Dom Capers while our Harrington-led offense stumbled from ineptitude to ineptidude. We kept the defense together, kept Dom Capers around, everyone was a happy camper ("looking great on D, now we just need some offense and we have a shot at the division" was the popular sentiment) .. until they plummeted from #4 to #23 when Cameron's offense didn't really click either. Now, I'm not saying that we're looking at a 1-15 season or anything. But at some point we need to get a decent offense going or this defense, like most defenses that don't get any help whatsoever, especially young ones, will fold. People can call me negative all day long, but if we think that our defense is too good for us to implode never mind the struggles on offense, then we haven't even learned our own history.
Capers didn't run the defense, Saban did. You could tell the next year when Capers didn't run the same defense.
Aye. That's why I said that we'll need to get at least a halfways decent offense going, because if we dig ourselves in a hole to begin with (certainly not impossible with NE, SD and The Team Who Shall Not Be Beaten [By Us] being amongst the first 4 opponents) and the team knowing that Sparano is on the short leash, things have a chance to get ugly fast - even though we should be way too talented to have that happen. I'm comparing the fan sentiments in this instance, not the defenses.
Your point is valid. Ever since 13 retired the Phins have squandered "championship defenses"; it's sickening.
Right there with you Aqua! If we were in contention after going through the ridiculous 1st half schedule we faced, then I can't fathom us not being contenders (barring major injury) after addressing some of our weaknesses. If last year's team could play with the big boys when Special Teams & injuries didn't interfere, then I don't see why this year's team cant after: ----on offense----- 1. improving the ground game by adding Thomas, a much needed explosive outlet back (Bush), a stud C/G Pouncey, and having guys like Jerry, Incognito, Long or whomever else likely playing better after more seasoning & more time together. 2. adding a speed element (Gates) to help open up the field and give Brandon, Bess, & Bush more space to make plays underneath. 3. having Marshall in the best shape of his life after being injured, slow, and out of shape. How often did we see him gassed last year to where practice squad guys had to sub in for him (and in the redzone during crucial times to boot)? 4. adding a versatile Hback who can be lined up everywhere. 5. Henne being a year seasoned after watching film, extreme offseason dedication, and establishing leadership w/o the Penny distraction. 6. Having the entire offense back to full health (Henne included). 7. Having a kick returner in one of the explosive youngens we brought in. -----defense------ 1. Soliai will likely emerge quickly as a top NT in the league. 2. Langford is emerging into a Pro Bowler. 3. Starks is likely a Pro Bowler after a full return to DE. 4. McDaniel is one of the best rotation guys in the NFL IMO. 5. The addition of Odrick & Edds. 6. Smith & Davis are prime for a break out season. 7. Misi is prime for a break out season. 8. nickel play should be improved by either Allen, a year seasoned Carroll, or whomever else they bring in. 9. Clemons is improving, and Jones could be a dark horse to turn the corner into a potential gem. 10. Nolan will be in year 2 with this group. 11. Dansby & Wake will be better b/c of all this. By keeping our entire defense intact, this group IMO is likely to emerge as a dominant force due to the mere fact that they're still young and ascending to their full potential (which many teams do not have the privilege of saying). It's scary to think how good this group could be when everyone is playing to their potential. With some good field position, defense capitalizing on more turnover opportunities while allowing less big plays, I could see Henne and this upgraded offense playing some pretty good ball. IMO we were good enough to go 10-6 last season (and against the 3rd toughest schedule)...... so I don't see why playoff possibilities are out of the question with the improvements we've made combined with the extensive growth of all our young, talented guys.
But even if they did (and I'd argue that they should have had at least an inkling with Little Nicky gone), then they probably still wouldn't have guessed it to go belly up given that it was seen as a very talented unit back then.
He absolutely didn't. He ran the same defense as before, and when it was clear the personnel they has was too completely broken down to continue, he shifted the defense within the boundaries of what was already in the playbook defensively from the year before. An even 4-3 was always in the playbook.
I could do without Edwards & Sims Walker "if" we had a full offseason to bring Gates & Clay up to speed. Because of the hold out, I think it's almost imperative to bring in someone of talent to help bridge this temporary gap. I'm open to other players, but Walker & Edwards were the first 2 to come to mind. Any ideas? Is Jones for GB still available? If we can land Zach Miller, then I'd be less picky about the WR.
Orton isn't going to restructure his contract to be the starter in Denver. If he clearly beats out Tebow and is their best option why would he restructure his deal with them to take less money knowing that as soon as Tebow is ready his time in Denver is over.
Broncos just paid him 1.5 millie in a roster bonus, inow, Kyle Orton is very unlikely to wind up in Miami.
Thats just it, our answer is Henne or a rookie we draft. Retreads are retreads for a reason. Henne could use competition and Orton is a great one for that but not 4 a 2. That is lt commitment which I dont think they want with Orton. I believe if Henne shines this year year then they are good, if Orton won the job, he was a couple year starter and a rook was drafted rd 1. Now it is if Henne struggles again then we start over at coach and qb. But I just think they saw it as with no offfseason and no significant upgrade, the cost right now between comp to Denver and to Orton was too high and Henne has at least had the offseason to study the playbook. Orton is not so big of an upgrade that they could afford to pay that compensation and have Henne look better.
He is a studio analyst for the show Jets Nation on New York City-based sports network SportsNet New York.
Some reports said the problem wasn't compensation, the teams agreed on that part, the problem was with Orton and Miami agreeing on the contract restructure. Do we really even know for sure what we have offered the Broncos?
All those are possible, which is why I'm not going to get too worked up over it at this point in time. Just sit back and enjoy the season, root for our boys every week, and see how things shake out.
I think they legitimately wanted some competition for Henne, thats about it, not pay they guy to be our franchise QB..Offerering a third from all accounts shows that there is some confidence in Henne that is going unnoticed, sticking with him and signing Moore reaffirms this theory..Its just about some competition..
I agree with this that we are an ascending team, however our schedule is getting tougher.. If we get to 9 or 10 wins I will be happy with their progress.
Looked different? That's pretty sound lol. Nick Saban occasionally uses even 4-3 looks, and did so in Miami. Not loads of it, but he did it. Go take a look http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/135248/2001_LSU_Defense_-_Lou_Saban.pdfat this old LSU playbook at page 149 or loads of other diagrams. Dom Capers didn't change the defense and you weren't paying proper attention if you thought he suddenly just did whatever.
