Color me surprised. I thought he would be gone. I wonder if Starks is in the deal for Orton.

Not a good move. But not surprising. They're not good at making good moves.

I'll reserve final judgment until I see the money involved but my first reaction is this isn't good. Either they're trading Randy Starks for Kyle Orton, which would be stupid, or they have a strong feeling that Jared Odrick is the next Yatil Green. Either sucks.

This is really going to make those 4-5 DE sets devastating.

But seriously, nobody is going to trade for Odrick. I still don't understand why people keep suggesting this. If we move anyone, it will likely be Starks at this point.

I don't understand the move to re-sign him myself. Unless he's being brought in to provide depth at the NT position, but Starks can provide that just fine, when they move Odrick and Merling in for pass rushing duties.

I hope they don't move Randy Starks, because it doesn't make any sense. I don't understand the love for McDaniel. He had a solid year last year in limited playing time, but he isn't better than Starks (who is a young player still). You don't trade Odrick who you just used a 1st round pick on a year ago. I dunno.

Someone will need to be moved and it's my feeling that it may be Phil Merling. Then again, I thought they'd oust him after last year's debacle. Leads me to believe they really like him and are willing to go through anything with that guy.

If Randy Starks is included in a deal for Orton and McDaniels is the replacement, the DLine has been weakened IMO.

A guy you just drafted in the 1st round last year in exchange for a guy that I'm squeamish about trading a 3rd round pick for?

I'm supposed to like that deal?

Me neither, other than he is a good young player, still on the come, and we are keeping him. I'm glad about that. That's all I really need to know right now. If it is connected to some other part of a grand scheme, then it will all come out in the wash.

Send Merling's fat lazy *** packing.
I'm not sold on Odrick's abilties either although time was limited and he just may well be damaged goods.
I doubt Starks is going anywhere. That would be one of the worst moves they could make.

True, however he also provides Soliai insurance, this is a decent move, but McD does not score TD's.

Yes, it would mean the #2 pick is protected for draft 2012.

Love this signing , I am a big fan of MCD and think he has only scratched the surface of his ability. At worse this allows Miami some trade depth along the dline. Starks , Langford or Odrick with a pick or other player would make an attractive package for a team in need of a young talented dlineman.

Now the second part of this signing is utilizing the strong depth we have at this position to improve in a weaker area.

    Love this signing !

Here's the thing. Until 2010 (NOTE: CONTRACT YEAR) Tony McDaniel was anywhere between bad and mediocre, at best. He's had his eyes on the prize with respect to his free agency bid for a year now. He wouldn't shut up about it. That was motivation for him to do well, and no denying he did pretty well.

But what happens now that he's got a deal? Because prior to 2010 (which he dedicated publicly to getting that cash money in free agency) he was just a mediocre castoff that had broken someone's face during a pickup basketball game and then was arrested for beating his girlfriend just last year.

Hey, the more the merrier. Having Tony McDaniels on the roster isn't going to lose you games. It's the COST will lose you games. What is the money involved here? How could that money have been put to better use? Does it mean that the Dolphins will be trading a Randy Starks to the Broncos in addition to draft picks for Kyle Orton?

Or does it mean that they believe Jared Odrick's career is pretty much over before it started, in which case re-signing Tony McDaniel looks like a smarter move, and yet it carries with it the realization that drafting Jared Odrick was a stupid mistake.

Trying to understand this regime is like reading cuneiform. Even when it's explained to you, it still doesn't make any sense.

If Odrick is going to have long term problems then that pick is a million times worse than it was on draft night (when it was pretty bad)

I'll say this much. Two years at $6 million is not as bad as it could have been. Still, that $3 million could have been used more productively, and I'm worried about the implications of his signing as it relates to Starks and Odrick.

Why would you trade any of those 3 over McDaniel? Starks and Langford are HEADS and SHOULDERS better than McDaniel. Starks is only 7 months older than him. So this only getting better idea is muck because Starks is already better and get maximize more of his potential himself.

We used a 1st round pick on Odrick. He was good enough to earn a starting position and move a Pro Bowl DE Randy Starks to NT to make room for him. So, I'm going to make the assumption that his ceiling is much higher than McDaniel as well.

Again, I just don't see this love affair for Tony McDaniel. He's a good depth player, but he's playing a position where we have plenty of it in Langford, Starks, Odrick, & Merling. He's versatile and can play inside behind Soliai, but so is Starks. Plus, Wake likes to play with his hand down in passing situations.

And now he signs a 2 year, 6 million deal when he could've gone out and look for a longterm-contract, possibly more money and definitely a better shot at, you know, actually starting games. It sure looks like a case of "show me the money!".

Don't forget that the soliai $12.5 million tag is still out there clogging the cap. No way we can get Orton without signing Soliai to a long term deal, and that still leaves very little room for an upgrade at the RB position.

This regime is speaking mandarin where everybody else is speaking English

Suspect Ty Culver is gone clearing 1 million + of that money, you know how they do things, 3 million is a extremely reasonable deal for Mcdaniel and I believe we have to add more firepower on offense but this was value hard to pass up on imho.

That, or when his agent started making calls around to teams about him they politely said "No thanks".

If you haven't actually been paying attention enough to have read McDaniels' tweets, heard his various radio appearances or seen beat writers talk about how focused and excited he's been for the last year about reaching free agency, then I don't expect you to agree with me.

More and more I'm leaning towards this being a sign they have very little confidence in Jared Odrick. This looks to me like a move to make McDaniel the primary 3rd DE in the rotation behind Starks and Langford. If that's the case, then more than anything I'm just pissed about them botching the 2010 draft.

If Jeff Ireland were to have a presser about this move, I can imagine him saying something along the lines of, "We wanted to strengthen our strenghts."

As opposed to improving weaknesses. But just think of all the ways Tony Sparano can divy up snap counts between Langford, Starks, McDaniel, Odrick, Merling, and Ryan Baker.
