Is there a defense that doesn't get pressure and shuts down teams? Do you really think a dominant defense could have guys like Marcus Dixon and Howard Green seeing significant snaps? What happens when one of your safeties gets hurt? Who is starting? The Jets salary cap can't be any lower than $120M. Thats before re-signing Holmes, and before signing their rookies. Mark Sanchez and Darrelle Revis are going to have to re-structure just so the Jets can fill out their roster.
Excuse me, he'll be their #3 WR. I'm sure if you were a Jets fan, you'd be posting a thread titled Our #3 WR is going to be Patrick Turner, and we are borrowing money from future year's salary cap, the Dolphins are going to roll us
If you ignore reality then sure. Our #2 QB is currently Tom Brandstater. That's about as relevant of a fact.
I'm not sure how thats relevant when debating whether its in their best interest to not only re-sign Holmes, but also guarantee someone another $20M when they're having to already restructure contracts just to fill out their roster.
Right, bc comparing the impact of a 3rd string WR and one of if not the best CB's in the league is very similar. Good point.
There's no debating it. Neither of us knows the specifics of how they'd manage to do it, but I don't think anyone can deny that there's a decent possibility that they can sign both.
Sure, you could probably fit both, but they would be a worse team because of it. They're an inevitable Tomlinson injury away from an offense thats giving significant snaps to guys like Pat Turner and Joe McKnight.
I'd take Joe McKnight over anyone else we have after DT. The margin between those two isn't exactly a canyon either.
s The jets are finding ways to sign/acquire players , Sanchez was on the radio today saying he wants to restructure what could be a 14 plus million dollar cap hit contract to add players. Jericho Cotchery won't be his primary target , imo , unfortunately.
Rumors they're coming to terms with Santonio Holmes... not sure if this effects this or if they can somehow get both.
If the Jets want to spend 1/6 of their salary cap on 2 CBs great!!! The day a Dolphins GM tries to build the Dolphins depending on what the Jets do is the day to FIRE him.
I wouldn't know. Computer games are for kids and interest me about as much as sitting through a church sermon or watching paint dry.
Ok, They sign Holmes and Asomuga. They lose Cromartie (poor man's Asomuga), Edwards, Smith Brad, Smith Eric, Ellis, Woody, and probably one other veteran, Calvin Pace perhaps. I'd almost be happier w/ that scenario than the one where they don't sign Asomuga.
Depends on what they do besides Holmes and Asomuga. And that's also assuming they don't make any trades.
Amen. You're killing it tonight. And IMO it'll take 50 million guaranteed to sign both Holmes and Edwards. I'd do backflips if they spent their cash that foolishly.
IMO they'll have no choice but to let the rest of their FAs walk and replace them with whatever is left on the FA scrap heap. They'll aslo have to replace a couple vets who are currently under contract. That could completely change the character of the team. You're also not taking into account that Miami is likely to add some firepower in FA, we've got a lot more cap space than NY and none of our best players are coming up for FA so we're not losing anyone significant.
Idk about that. We've never been the franchise to just blow money in FA bc we have it. I hope we def spend on some quality big names but I def don't think it's a lock we land one. And NY can still get another decent WR if they get Nnamdi but don't resign Holmes. Idk when this turned this thread turned into both or none.
IIRC the Jets are 6 million over the cap as we speak. Holmes, Edwards, Smith Brad, Cromartie, Smith Eric, Ellis & Pool are all FA. They have draft choices to sign, as well as UDFAs to fill out their training camp roster. Hypothetically, they could sign Holmes and Asomuga to long term deals w/ low base salaries for 2011 but huge signing bonuses that are prorated over the course of the contract, roster bonuses, etc. It's doable, I guess. But they'd still end up losing the aforementioned guys and they'd replacing them w/ scrap heap FAs while we lose none of our core guys and add a couple FA's to boot. I think it's pessimistic and unrealistic to propose a scenario by where the Jets land Asomuga and Holmes while we land no one of significance. We have more cap space than they do, and we have a regime that is sitting squarely on the hot seat. I don't think Ireland and co. will be pinching pennies when FA begins.
I hope not but we'll see. If we spend the majority of those pennies on another Smiley, I'll be heated. Like I said, even without Holmes, they could still make some adequate moves and land Nnamdi.
Paying big for a #2 WR (or two #1s) is rarely a good investment. It just doesn't improve your offense much. If the Jets signed NA, I wouldn't change a single thing about my approach to FA. We'll still bring in a RB and probably a pass rusher, a G and some vet QB. Personally, I'd like a TE and a S too, but my goal is to build the best team to compete with everybody not just the Jets. As several people have pointed out, their team will have holes. Our goal should be to build a balanced team that can attack in a variety of ways.
Who cares it will just make the inevitable end to their season even worse for the Jest Fans when they get their hopes up even higher. We will win a title again before they do, its just the way it is.
Just have to hope that the Texans up their offer. Jets will resign Holmes, the other losses, with the exception of Woody, won't have nearly as big an impact as people think.
I think losing B Edwards is a huge deal to them. Also, Brad Smith is a FA, I think he had a pretty big impact on their offense. Not to mention if they sign Nnamdi something has to go. They cant afford to pay two CB's that much money and not suffer in other areas.
Or maybe he's wearing a Jets jersey. In which case all of you Christian guys would need to convert to Islam or something.
Once again......Screw the Jets. This is a Dolphins forum. I don't care what they do. If what they do affects us in a manner where we have to go get another big receiver, I have lost faith. They had a few lucky breaks last year. They were not much better.I refuse to fear my opponent in any game. sorry my friend but we still need another wide receiver because if Marshall has another domestic episode then we will be screwed because our other wrs dont scare anyone at all and we cant afford to keep losing ground to the pats and jets and what if the bills jump ahead of us? that is a real possibility given how our front office dose things. if we finish 3rd in our division or worse then I will completely go off the deep end.
It's actually a known fact that the Devil/Harvey Keitel is a Jets fan. It was documented in Little Nicky. The Jets have signed Santonio Holmes and he's saying that the Skins offered significantly more, he took a discount. And I don't view him as a #2 WR by the way, he's most DEFINITELY a #1. Now there are reports that even after that, the Jets are still "close" with Nnamdi Asomugha, who is reported to potentially be willing to settle for less money and a more 'creative' contract structure in order to be in New York because he sees himself as having an acting career ahead of him. Oh, and Mark Sanchez says he's perfectly willing to restructure his #5 overall bloated contract in order to help fit all these guys in. But don't worry, the Dolphins have signed Jason Trusnik, are showing interest in Marion Barber, and are trying to re-sign Tony McDaniel. We'll be ok.
I think people marry themselves to the thought that they can't handle it salary cap wise and how can they get all these top line guys in. I think people forget what that feels like because Miami was in the same situation in the early-mid 90s. Veteran free agents, love what New York has to offer. They have a winning team, they're primed for a shot to win the Super Bowl, and it's the perfect market to become a legend in for post-career success. Guys are willing to do these "creative" contracts to make it work for the opportunity to win. The Jets aren't worried about long-term success. They have the opportunity to win a Super Bowl in a certain window and they're going for it. They're going to make it work. I think as Dolphins fans, we want to believe that they're going to come crashing down with cap casualties and fill the roster with low level guys, etc. However that hasn't been the case the past two years, nor will it this year. They're a good team and if they get Nnamdi Asmougha, they're going to be that much better. We'll get there.
Let's see if you guys can put your arms around this.... If they do this...they can now use Ryan's entire blitz package and it makes their defense better, as well as hides any deficiency they have in pure pass rushers. If it creates just 6 more turnovers and 10 more sacks this season..do you know how insane that Jet defense will be?
