If the owners want a global settlement which includes the TV damages case, then they better be prepared to pay out something.

Preaching to the choir, it's tempting as hell. I mean, could you imagine? You have the best left tackle in football protecting the blind side and two of the best receivers in football running routes. Brandon Marshall complements a Sidney Rice real well too because as I've said before Marshall was always best when he could be moved around into the slot on 1 of 3 pass plays. Rice is more of a pure Flanker.

Thing is, it's so bass ackward to set that up before you even have a QB. You look at the Falcons and they're setting that up more organically, by getting Matt Ryan first and pairing him with Roddy White, before they tack on a Julio Jones.

Now on the other hand if you could somehow work out a Carson Palmer deal PLUS get Sidney Rice? Yikes.

Maybe Drew Brees will become a free agent and Miami can say no thanks for a third time.

This brings up an interesting thought / question. Lets say the owners give these four players their freedom. What # do the owners need to pass when they vote on the CBA? Is it 24/32? So we assume Al Davis, Ralph Wilson, Brown, and then the Chargers, Pats, Colts and Saints all vote no (because of their need to retain their franchise tagged players). The CBA would still pass. heh...

I don't think we should assume Al Davis will vote no on the CBA. I think he's not been a problem when it comes to the CBA. He's usually more of a problem when it comes to rule changes. The bigger problems for the CBA have been Ralph Wilson and Mike Brown, and now (unfortunately) Stephen Ross seems to be tossing his name into that group along possibly with Bob Kraft (who was already there) and maybe Wayne Weaver. But I could also see Tom Benson getting in with that group, I have no regard for him whatsoever.

I don't think it'd be enough to blow it up.

I don't think the owners are interested in getting a deal done that would leave that many owners unhappy.

Either way, if it came down to this single issue, the owners could just go to the public and say "the NFL is back as soon as these 4 players drop this". The players really don't have much leverage here.

Kraft has been one of the biggest peace makers recently, apparently. He's not a problem. Even Jerry Richardson seems to be on board.

so you would go with Rice because you favor the passing game?..see if I had my choice of a big time free agent like that, I would go with Mankins on the oline and punish fools.

As we've recently learned, midwest fans don't take too kindly to an icon leaving. ;)

Seriously though, I think this is his way of assuring a long-term deal. Nobody likes the franchise tag.

    He ain't leaving.

Oh I understand why. And I agree with them (Jackson, Mankins) that they were being taken advantage of. One of the worst things you can do is become a good player under A.J. Smith.

I just don't agree with their methods this week.

It is what it is. The 1993 players did the same thing and they got what they wanted. If I'm the owners and I have all the wheels set in motion to start training camp and free agency and everything, the very last thing I'm doing is letting four little franchise tags get in the way of it.

The $320 million in back pay and the TV lockout settlement are much bigger deals than this. The media are probably making more of it than the owners will. They'll grant Jackson, Mankins, Manning and Brees their requests IMO.

You're very likely correct about this. As it relates to the Dolphins, however, the only name on this list Jeff Ireland likely cares about is Logan Mankins. :pity:

But with a big o fat Super Bowl ring on their fingers it would be hard not to be happy.

    I'd be happy.

Million dollar question, does Carson Palmer have anything left in the tank? Rumors of elbow and knee injuries have been floating for the last 4-8 months.

Well we don't know if Mankins will be available for one thing , so that is one issue. I do like Mankins , obviously , but he is 4 years older and may not be as much of an impact player as Rice could be.

I don't think coach Tony would agree with me , maybe Irish would though . I would try to get an elite player that would provide the biggest long term impact, Rice is a pup and would dictate that double teams would be a non issue. You don't get a chance to add a player of that ability at that age very often and not without giving up players or draft choices.

I don't think I would pay the money it would take to get Mankins if I could get Rice , and I favour a passing game that can be dominant and put up points quickly and consistently over a grind it out run game that stalls at the 12 yard line and settles for a fist pump.

Ideally you want both , but I don't see the chances of winning a Super Bowl , and that is my hope , with a pound it out run game being better than with an elite passing game.

I would however rather sign a G like Mankins or Nicks then sign a slightly above average duo like say a Steve Smith and Darren Sproles , or a Malcolm Floyd and Joseph Addai. I also would sign a Santonio Holmes if I "knew" his head was on right .

Question would you sign Mankins and trade for Palmer if it meant we had to release Carey, Crowder, and let's say maybe Bell(if you wanna sign a fa rb)?

If Peyton would come to this team, I would suffer an erection that lasts more than 4 hours.

    One can dream, yes?
