There have been reports of potential changes in tags used by NFL teams. I know that the players wanted to eliminate the franchise tag because those players were stuck with a one year deal in place of a 4-5 year contract. IF the tag is eliminated, our Soliai deal is history, and we are back to square 1. My understanding is that when a new CBA is agreed on, there will be about a week for teams to sign their own players before FA kicks in. IF Soliai wants to test the market, should we look towards a Franklin or possibly someone else? This is nothing against Soliai but, that position MUST be filled, and Starks ain't gonna do it.
By all reports the franchise tag will be in the new deal, and even if it changes, it's unlikely to not apply to Soliai, a guy whose first deal just ended, and has been franchised for the first time. That's the spirit of the tag in the first place. I think the bigger concern is his long-term deal. He's unlikely to slack given the one-year nature of the tag and the potential for big money right around the corner, but I don't know if you can risk signing him to a long term deal. Based on...what, exactly? The single game he started at the position where the opposing backs did poorly?
Unfortunately, NT is a priority for others as well. How far can we break the bank on a long term deal after only one good year?
I'm not a lawyer, but since the franchise tag was applied before the previous league year ended, wouldn't it still apply to Soliai, regardless of what happens in the new CBA? It's a contract.
Well, I think the fact that the FO franchised him, considering they don't franchise anyone, shows that they're willing to do whatever it takes to retain him.
My biggest concern with Solai is how much time off he has. He's came into camp overweight almost every season. It would be a shame to see him come in looking like a balloon again after such a good season.
Some of the Franchise players already signed their tenders and some didn't. I'd think that those who already signed, stay signed, no matter what.
The tag wasn't just applied, he signed it. I am going to guess that because he signed it, it will still apply regardless of the new CBA.
I posted that then looked above and read yours. Shows me for reading something then wanting to reply right away.
Two of the biggest junk food junkies on the team!! Although Solai did have a nutritionist he was using and it did him wonders. Hopefully he's sticking to it....
Could work the other way as well, he knows if he wants lifetime money he will have to follow up his great 2010 season, to me if he comes in about 370ish he'll be fine, just worried about the 400 pds plus stuff. He reminds a lot of Shaun Rogers before he also porked up.
Solia will be under contract for next season no matter what happens in the new CBA since he already signed the franchise tag.
Another reason why if we resigned either of the R&R (Former) Express, I'd prefer Ricky, who gets it when it comes to nutrition.
Tangent but hopefully now everyone will understand that Cameron was pushing Ronnie back in 2007. He pushed him to be a better RB. Was developing him before the injury Ronnie was on great pace.....Brought in Chatman to challenge him and he did. Dolphin fans didn't understand the KR stuff with Ronnie...... Cam understood I still think.
If the season starts on time, Solai is set to get a huge raise since he's already signed his tendered offer...
Officially, Thursday is the first day NFL teams can place a franchise tag on players whose contracts are expiring and would otherwise be eligible for unrestricted free agency. But in one of many twists we can expect in the structure of the 2011 offseason, the NFL Players Association has declared the franchise tag to be irrelevant until a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is reached. The existing CBA will expire March 3, and the reality is no players will be changing teams this offseason -- whether they are franchised or not -- until the league reaches a labor resolution. It is possible, however, that players who are franchised now could be grandfathered into the next CBA. So it's at least worth discussing who might be candidates here in the NFC North. The exact salary levels, as well as the number of years required for unrestricted free agency, are yet to be determined. Below we've included players with at least four years of experience. This is from ESPN back in Feb. The issue has not been resolved, and is currently being discussed. Back in Jan, the NFL hesitated to allow teams to use the tag because of the conflict with the union. IF the players win this point, the franchise tag would be negated, signed or not. I don't see this as happening but, it could.
Worst case scenario; it's negated. Couldn't we hypothetically just sign Soliai to a 1-year $18 million contract? Not that it'd be a smart contract, but it'd be the same thing as applying the tag and there'd be no reason for him not to sign again.
Not if Soliai signed the deal...in that case it legally has to be 'grandfathered' in at the very least...Still, I'm sure there will be provisions written into and agreed upon by the NFL and the NFLPA regarding guys in this situation...for example, do you think the league wants Peyton Manning to be an UFA ?? I don't think so...
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/10/uncertainty-lingers-regarding-the-franchise-tag/ Here's an article showing the legal side of the dispute and that it could have been a judge's call. The players were saying that there was no franchise tag available to be offered. If that is the case, there is nothing to grandfather in. IF there is a change in the tag, I would think the signed contracts would change as well. It's all going to come down to how this bargaining chip is used.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6696089 Here's the latest from an hour ago. They say that "Certain tags will be retained but they are still being discussed."
