Too lazy to re-find and post the link, but I heard Ireland make this comment during his post-draft press conference. He basically said we missed our guy by a couple of picks twice...any thoughts as to who we missed out on?
I think it was Zuttah. Maybe they thought he would be there in round 4. If you listen to the presser he said a guard and Center went before us and we didn't want anyone to take our guy. SO it seems they reached for the first guard taken.
I don't recall him saying that. Are you sure? Gueess I missed it. I'd love to know whom we missed. Bpk
I listened to all the pressers and did not hear " we missed our guy". I did hear there were several Olinemen taken in a row as they neared Murphy, so they traded up to make sure they got their guy.
I really need to explore other options on day two of the draft...but I happened to notice that the Dolphins went all the way down to 10 seconds before selecting Lex Hilliard no reason to go that long that late in the draft...so my guess is that Andy Studebaker or Mike Hart was a target...probably Studebaker considering he is a late small school big pass rushing OLB...kind of fits the mold this year in the late UDAFA type's.
I think Barry Richardson from Clemson was a guy they may have targeted in round 6 (before the Donald Thomas selection). He got picked by KC 3-5 spots before the Dolphins took Thomas.
i was hoping for Nicks in the 6th but the Saints took him in the end of the 5th, maybe that was one Also, you have to question this FO for missing their guy(s). I mean last year, we got all the players we targeted so i am losing faith. of course thats sarcasm
I wanted Greco and/or Zuttah, but didn't know about the T-rex arms on Greco, thanks, I feel better now.
I really believe it has to be Zuttah, we were all over this guy. When he went, they jumped to get the next guy on their board that they felt could start right away. I think that is the key as well.
I heard it too. The person I think they "just missed out on" was OT/OG from Pittsburgh Mike McGlynn. He was picked right in front of us before we picked Shawn Murphy. I ready his report and it sounded like he had a lot of characteristics we had been drafting for. Such as "shows a mean streak", "explosive", "passion for the game", "tough".... it keeps going.
It was Jeff Ireland's post draft press conference. I watched it on the official Dolphins website Sunday night, but it seems to have been removed from that page...I'm looking for a different link to it.
Found it: (On if he looks back at anything and wishes he had done something different) – “I feel real good. I feel real good to be honest with you. There were a couple players – I won’t go in to who they were – that got taken maybe a couple picks before us that we wished we would have had, but we’re extremely happy with the group we got. We feel really good.” http://www.miamidolphins.com/newsite/news/top_story.asp?contentID=5786
I'm sure every team misses guys they are targeting. If not, you are either targeting your guys too high or targeting the wrong players. If we put a mid third round grade on a guy and we are picking first in the fourth round, once he starts to slip past the middle part of the third round, the anxiety will build until we get him. And if our guy is any good, other teams will want him as well. This is nothing new. And if ANY front office knows what they are doing, guys they target will get picked ahead of them regularly. Other teams have scouts and FO personnel as well. You work from list, (board, chart) and you go down the list. As a guy gets picked, hes lined out. If the top guy on your list is picked right ahead of you, you simply go right down the list and pick your next highest targeted guy. The idea that we had a guy targeted and he gets picked and then we have NO IDEA of who we are going to pick is nonsense. It may be that there is concensus on the guy we miss and a debate about the guy we pick, but there is an order to these things, I promise you.
