Whomever is drafting with the 3rd pick of the 4th round will probably try to pick Noel up............... in free agency.

Cedric Peerman is a better NFL back, was projected in the 3rd-4th round, and wasn't drafted till the 6th..... and he ran a 4.34 at 216 lbs with a 1.4 10 yard split while playing well in the Senior Bowl. Good luck Devine. lol.

By the way, I'd still love to steal him from Cincy..... unless he's now somewhere else.

With those 14 players off the board you nailed it with Mallett, Ingram, and Pouncey being the BPA at a position of need for us. Here's a wild card for you: Ryan Kerrigan. Is he this year's Clay Matthews?

The thing I keep going back to with Ingram and Pouncey is the fact that RB and OG aren't core positions and Ireland has yet to draft anything but a core position in the 1st or 2nd round.

QB is a core position and definitely a need for us. So Mallett makes a lot of sense if he's still on the board. However if his off-the-field issues check out I wonder if he will make it past the 49ers, Titans, Redskins, or Vikings.

If Mallett is gone and we cannot trade down I believe Ireland will draft Ryan Kerrigan.

I'm down with that BR, no prob. Matter of fact, where's Padre when you need him? He was pimpin' Kerrigan right around the time of the combine. And, I think he definitely fits that "best defensive player available" criteria. So yeah...I'm cool if that's the way it goes down. Still say I'm hoping for a trade down above all else though. Would love to see us recover that second rounder.

Thanks for your participation and comments...much appreciated. :knucks:

A good player for a 4/3, but imo not so much for a 3/4. He has a high motor and a good rush, but is not a guy that looks good or comfortable in space.

    That's a pretty odd comparison.

Forget about his success at WVU...some team will take a chance on a back that posted 26 reps on the bench, to go along with his 4.26 pro day 40. Now factor in him having a good career at West Virginia and him having solid senior bowl practices. I just don't see how he won't be taken in the first 5 rounds. Even with his ankle injury.

I can understand where you're coming from. However, if a 4.34 guy at 216 lbs (with talent) who can take a greater beating in the NFL can fall to the 6th round, I can see where a limited role player falls to the 7th.... or even out of the draft completely.

His success in the return game will be somewhat limited because of the kickoff change, and it's difficult to project him as an "dangerous" NFL return man when he's not elite by college standards (34 KO returns with a long of 48). His hands aren't proven. You can't ask him to block. He's a tiny target in the passing game, and the risk of injury goes up as the players are now bigger and more physical. Unless I'm missing something, he's the type of guy you almost need to design specific plays for or can only play during certain times of the game when the circumstance allows it.

I've read Devine bench presses 450 lbs., but 4.26 forty is Chris Johnson type speed. I'd be amazed if he slipped past the third round.

He would give us speed at a position that is classic for instant production. He would be our return guy. The only knock would be if he has alligator arms.

This draft sucks for speed, it's a nasty meth whore that needs to be stopped...

Well, a little over 48 hours and 62 votes into this little experiment, the early results are starting to form an interesting consensus. By a two to one margin it seems most of you are hopeful we can trade down out of the #15 vs. drafting Ryan Mallet at #15 (34 to 17 votes). Ingram only got 4 votes, and Pouncey 2. Hmmm...

So how many of you I wonder are hopeful we can trade down and draft Ryan Mallet? It's an idea I'm really start to warm up to. Diego would be the ideal trade partner IMO, as we'd only have to move down three spots, and the two teams in between unlikely to draft a QB in the first round (Jax & NE).

I've decided I don't want Ingram at #15. There'll be other options later on in the draft, as I've heard it's a deep draft for RB's. Besides, rumors surrounding his knee are rather troublesome. I like Pouncey, but not at #15. Yeah, Mallet may be the pick. Question is, if so...will it be at #15, #18, or even later?

    Thoughts/opinions?

Personally, I think Mallett is a horrible risk. I see his upside as no better than Cutler and his downside as Leaf. I see his most probable outcome as Druckenmiller. I would prefer a trade down that netted Ingram or Pouncey.

I'd love to trade down and pick up the 2nd I'm missing, but the stark fact is: trading down is for teams that already have their franchise Quarterback.

If my research shows that Ryan Mallet has better than an even shot at being a successful NFL QB, then I take the QB. It's that simple, and I'd thank my lucky stars to have a shot at a guy like Mallet with the 15th pick.

NO POSITION is as important to winning championships as Quarterback—NONE.

If the recent discussion about Parcells' choice of Jake Long over Matt Ryan illustrates anything, it's that one overriding fact. So much so that even the choice of a perennial All-Pro at what is arguably the second-highest-value position—Left Tackle—doesn't serve to mitigate second-guessing as a result.

The Long vs. Ryan argument has been made and I don't want to rehash it here; I'll just say that I've always been a strong believer in a great Offensive Line, but a point made in another thread brings to light that the last few Super Bowl winners have had lines ranging from okay to good...none of them "great."

The one thing all of those teams have is a franchise Quarterback.

You CANNOT overemphasize the importance of the position to winning championships; it's impossible to overstate. And, that being the case, if Mallet has the tools and you're lucky enough to have him fall to you at 15—which, frankly, I really don't believe will happen—then you take him.

Don't worry about 15 being "too high" for Mallett; if he turns out to be the man, that'll be a moot point in about 6-8 months. And if he busts, well then 15 will be the same as 35, or 55—a bust at QB is a high-profile bust.

But at least you rolled the dice on the most important position, not on a Defensive Back who could never find a position, nor an undersized, chickenhearted little Wide Receiver.

This is glaringly true. Chad Henne busting from the 57th overall pick is just as harmful as Chad Henne busting from the 1st overall pick, the only difference being that we had the cap room to throw bad money at Jake Grove and Ernest Wilford.

While taking the right guy over rides picking him too early, over drafting players usually just means you paid too much for a guy who wasn't that good.

Excellent post Nabo! Well written and very insightful IMHO. And, it's not like I don't agree with you re; taking "your" guy if he's OTB (which is, as you say, especially true if you're talking a bout a possible franchise QB), but let me ask my prior question in a slightly different way...

What if Mallett is their guy, but only to a point? What if they feel so strong about trading down that if they can do it (i.e., find a suitable trade partner) that they're gonna do that no matter what? Then if Mallet is there at say #18 or #24, they pick him. But, if he's is gone, they say "bummer, oh well X is our fall back, take him."

Then, and here's where it gets real interesting (and dicey)...let's say there's another QB that they have high on their board that is projected to go somewhere in the middle rounds (ala Yates or Stanzi). You know, a prospect that has sort of flown under the radar, but they really like him. Now, he becomes their target as far as a QB prospect goes. They simply move him up a full round from their projections and take him as the fall back guy.

I mean, no one ever needs to know that he wasn't their target in the first place. Not only that, but after four (possibly five) meetings with Mallett, everyone else is duped into thinking that he was their guy from the get go. I know, that may sound crazy, but, if you're the GM, and that's where you are in terms of how you feel about Mallett (i.e., like him don't love him) does that strategy even merit consideration?

I think with Mallett, we either think "he's our guy, if he is there at 15 we are taking" or you think "after all the time we spent with him, we just don't think he is the right guy," in which case you attempt a trade down barring some miracle falling player being there at 15. After the trade down, you look at a Pouncey or LeShoure/Ingram. I don't think Mallett can be your guy "to a point" as you said. He either is, or isn't, and moving down 4 slots is not changing that fact. As for taking Stanzi or Yates .... bleh. There are reasons these guys are third rounders - they are second tier players. Mallett is physically a first tier QB, with character concerns that it seems our front office is very keen on getting to the bottom of.

Bottom line, if Mallett is your guy, you take him and 15 and remember he will be throwing to Brandon Freaking Marshall who we got for that second round pick. Add DJ Williams in round 3, Roy Helu in round 4 and voila, our 2011 Miami Offense.

Let's start by saying that I don't believe for a second that Mallet will fall to 15; there are no fewer than 15 other teams going into this draft looking for their franchise QB; almost all pick ahead of us, and even if by some miracle those teams pass on Mallet, if we trade down there is ZERO chance in my estimation that Mallet makes it to our next pick. Even if it's only a few slots down.

Now, if you have done all your research and concluded that Mallet is not going to be a successful NFL QB, then you don't take him at all—15, 35 or 85. After all, a bust is a bust—why waste a pick on a bust if that's what you think he'll be?

But I don't see how you look at Ryan Mallet and say he doesn't have a chance to be a successful NFL QB. A judgment like that is akin to Wannstedt asking what Trent Green could do that Jay Fiedler couldn't ten years ago; it says more about your ability as an NFL GM to judge QB talent than about Mallett.

And if he does have the talent—THEN YOU TAKE HIM WHEN YOU CAN GET HIM.

Because if you don't, someone else will; the Jags at 16, the Chiefs at 21, the 'Hawks at 25. Or the Colts at 22?! Someone has to start getting ready behind Manning.

The Patriots have two picks after us, the 17th and 28th; would it surprise you to see Belichick take Mallet with one of those picks? Because it wouldn't surprise me a bit. Belichick would either parlay that pick into more picks down the line, or he'd trade Brady after a year or two for more picks. In any case, with two picks to play with between 17 and 28, that's exactly what could happen.

But the real concern isn't after 15, where the Chargers, Giants, Bucs, Colts, Eagles, Ravens, Falcons, Jets, Steelers and Packers all have young franchise guys, and the Pats, Colts, Bears and Saints have established veterans; it's ahead of us, where any one of fourteen teams could be looking for their franchise guy.

Bottom line: if you're somehow lucky enough to get a shot at Mallet with the 15th pick, you take him. But I seriously doubt he'll make it to us there.

Another excellent post Nabo. And, please know that I'm not arguing with you (not that you're suggesting I am, but just to clarify). In fact, I tend to agree with you, both in regards to Mallett and your draft philosophy.

But, and here's the rub...I do think Mallett will be there at #15. Moreover, I think he'll be there at #18, and maybe even beyond. In fact, I've seen several mocks that are projecting him as a second round pick. I don't know that I would go that far, but I don't see any team between #15 and #25 that would pick him over other positional needs/prospects.

Moreover, I think these character concerns and alleged drug use could also contribute to him falling further than he otherwise should. Combine those factors and you have what I think might be the perfect storm in terms of value base drafting him towards the bottom of the first round. Call me crazy, but I think it's a scenario we might see play out in a little less than two weeks.

One caveat...he has to get Minny at #12 for any of this to matter. And, I'm just not sure 'bout that. I've heard Locker rumors, but I personally can't see taking Locker over Mallett. Stranger things have happened, but...

If Mallett makes it to #15 I believe we could trade down as far as #24 and still get him.

    16 JAGS - Garrard
    17 PATS - Brady
    18 CHARGERS - Rivers
    19 GIANTS - Manning
    20 BUCS - Freeman
    21 CHIEFS - Cassel
    22 COLTS - Manning
    23 - EAGLES - Vick
    24 SAINTS - Brees

None of those teams are drafting a QB in the 1st round. I would bet good money on it. My concern would be a team trading up from the 2nd round, but if we pulled off a trade with the Saints, picked up their 2nd, and still got Mallett, that would be my dream draft. (We would probably have to give them our 1st and 6th for their 1st and 2nd.)

Potential players that the Saints might trade up for: Ryan Kerrigan, Anthony Castonzo, Gabe Carimi, or Nate Solder.

Of course Mallett has to make it past the 49ers, Titans, Redskins, and Vikings in order for my dream to come true.

Here's the bottom line - if you think Mallett is a franchise QB you DO NOT trade down and chance another team making a move. You take your guy and understand that if he turns into an elite QB he will be more than worth not trading back to pick up a lower round pick.

Damn, half of us vilify Parcells for passing on Matt Ryan for possibly the greatest LT in the game right now. Can imagine the furor if we traded back a few spots only to see the Jags take Mallett, or to see Buffalo or someone trade up ahead of us to take him and then watch him have a Bradford type season?

We passed on one franchise QB in Ryan and are still suffering the effects. Thank god the guy we got instead is actually amazing. But to pass on 2 potential franchise QBs? We cannot in any way shape or form do that.

To be clear: If Mallett is still on the board at #15 I would not trade down. I would pull the trigger. Mainly because I would be too afraid of another team trading up ahead of us and taking him. However if we did trade down and we still got Mallett I would be ecstatic.

If Iam the gm, I know that I have built a top 5 defense with my previous drafts, so I pat myself on the back and I go full offense besides maybe 1 pick, and never look back, I earned it, and my defense deserves to be kept off the field so they can dominate, so my draft will reflect that concept..The other reason why Iam going all offense....Our utterly pathetic offense, I cant do that to my defense again, so I will exhaust my resources to create some balance for my team.

So, question for all the Mallett supporters...how much does the drug use allegations being confirmed (it's being reported Mallett apparently admitted to various NFL personnel at the combine that he experimented with drugs in college) change your opinion of him? Or, does it? And, what about reports that he has "zero leadership skills?" In other words, would you still take him at #15 if YOU were the one calling the shots in the Dolphins War Room on the 28th?
