That may be the goal of the game, but I couldn't care less for me. I know I'll get dinged for having Fitz and young developmental WR's, but I like building trenches out and defence before offence. Personally, I'd just do whatever makes you happy.

As for alen, when I spent time with him, as 9ers GM, and the work he had me do, it's based purely on observation of tape. We looked at the boards solely to see where others may be going to make sure we could get our guy, but they had little basis on driving where we were going with our picks.

Interesting since Alen claims to have never looked at players on sites. Not calling anyone a liar here. Just pointing out that I think for anyone to have a successful draft, you have to have guys you like, and you have to try and determine where other guys would pick them to make sure you can get the guys you like. The only difference is personal knowledge of players, which Alen seems to have much more than some of us, definitely more than myself.

I just don't see how anyone could execute a successful draft plan without anticipating where others might target their picks.

Well, it was when I was working with him because I wanted to make sure we weren't left with our assess in the wind. As he said, the board was 33 people, which means if that guy gets chosen, there's perhaps no immediate contingency plan. I'm not saying he's gathering any sort of info how they play from them, or if without me he even looked to see where people were going. I worked with him about a month, and obviously I brought my own practices with me, that being one of them. I couldn't tell you how he operates as a lone GM, but I'm saying when I started working with him, I insisted on that, meaning he wasn't doing it before.

I hope that makes a bit more sense, and as for the latter, if you value players in all rounds and only have so few, that's how you get supposed "reaches".

Edit: also look at that first part of the sentence
As in, that was the sole evaluation tactic. Look at tape, assign a grade, move on to next player.

For someone like me who is big on numbers, I insisted on the bolded part of your sentence, whereas, frankly, he could care less.

High risk, high reward on Austin but at this stage where he could net you top 20 value it's not a bad pick at all.

Austin was a player i considered at 49. Probly a better fit for a four man front.

I was going to pick Austin at #67 (and was considering him at #59 too) had I not been able to trade down based on pure value. Nice pick.

Thats exactly how I felt about Wisniewski. Austin was my backup plan. It was never anyone else but those two and 1 other (who hasnt been picked yet) all those times I was trying to trade up with you and like 3/4ths of the league that heard from me. Nicely done dude. Its a risk but the reward could be huge. If he washes out in 2 years because of attitude or stupidity then its only a 3rd round pick. But if he attains what he should attain based on talent, you won big.

I like Locker more then the two that I named previously but I can understand why someone would feel that way about him. With Austin I can understand it less. IMO there is not much question about his on field game except that he plays with too high a pad level at times and that gets him moved too easily but thats something that can be fixed. Its his off field and attitude that are really in question. If he behaves and really goes this late someone will have a steal.

Nice pick with Ellis, from Hampton, was hoping that he would fall to me in the 3rd. I think he is going to be the next Kris Jenkins type.

I see nothing appealing about Locker at all. Well, maybe the athleticism. But elite athleticism is not a requirement for (or even commonly found in) elite quarterback play. So if Locker wants to play WR… :shifty:

Why not Austin at 3 tech in an odd front? It works too. You're still one gapping.

the you are losing some of the 3-4 concepts, your putting the nose in the B gap. unless you are running off balanced line with 3 technique. You can do it but it comes down to in a 3-4 Carter was more valuable. Whereas is I was running a 4-3 with 2 dt in 1 technique then Austin would have been better fit for me, but at 63 running a 3-4 0 technique (most of the time) Carter was better fit.

I dont get what your trying to get at Alen. I havent thought about diff strategies like that as far as 123 techniques all that, quite frankly I dont coach anymore and only coached 13 yr olds so didnt get into diff gaps and such, ran 4-4 defense. playing days 30 years ago, and played db and wr. LOL I am running this from a basic 3-4 nose over center or 0 technique 2 de at 5 etc. I aint thinking possibilities of diff formations and combos with DT, tho now you make it sound fun, but wasnt thinking that hard. Dam your hurting my brain. I think too much as it is

I don't see how your nose is in the B gap? If you play a reduced front, Hampton is at 1 and Austin is at 3. Austin played 3 in 09 with Cam Thomas at the 1.

    Off balance?

    Gotcha.

Well correct me if I am wrong, I really dont think this much about gaps and techniques as such as I am old w an autistic daughter so dont really have time to break it down like that cause frankly I have no need, but my rememberence of teh 3 technique was the lineman lines up between guard and tackle which is the B Gap un;ess I m remembering wrong?

bad wording, like you said reduced line front, your giving me too much credit as I said, I aint thinking THAT much[/I]

3 technique is outside shoulder of the Guard.
