i dont know how Verizons LTE will work, but WiMax 4G provided by clear which is what my Evo uses is a huge upgrade... my 3G speeds are .67 Mbps down, and .69 Mbps up at work in queens the 4G speeds here are 7.22 Mbps down, and 1.05 Mbps up
Hey guys. Have been reading this thread with interest as I'm due to upgrade my phone in May from my Blackberry and trying to decide between the HTC HD7 or iPhone 4 (the longer I have my BB the more I hate it, however....) Obviously I wont have the same network issues you guys have but the thing I'd like to ask is how do the phones cope with the web, as is 85% or so of the web is flash based and I've read somewhere that the iPhone doesn't have a flash player. How does it cope with sites like nfl.com or even fins own site for example? I'm not into modding/jailbreaking as experience has taught me to stay well clear of anything the changes the original product!
Uh… no. Not even close to being true. This, however, is. iOS does not support Flash, nor does it need to. Flash kills battery life. NFL.com will redirect you to a mobile version of the site that basically just shows standings, stats, schedules, scores, and photos. You’ll get the full version of NFL.com, including videos, if you visit on an iPad. MiamiDolphins.com will give you basically the full site minus Flash, but there’s an official team app in the App Store, so there’s little reason to bother with the site. WiMAX is not 4G, only LTE is. (Though carriers are trying to market HSPA+ as 4G.) WiMAX is a totally separate technology. Think of it as long-range WiFi. LTE is superior to 3G as an on-paper specification. In practice, LTE chipsets are battery life hogs and carriers are only beginning to deploy LTE networks. Eventually, LTE will be comparable to WiFi in terms of speed and performance. If you want to buy a new phone now, no reason to wait. But if you can wait, then the iPhone 5 will be worth it, just for NFC alone.
Thanks Desides (I read 85% somewhere, possibly the same article as the flash player not being available), I don't like mobile versions of sites but then that could just be this cr*ppy phone I'm on now! I would prefer full sites for videos, particularly nfl.com especially as I don't get near a proper pc or laptop much these days.
Most sites serve up their standard versions to iPhone users. NFL.com is an exception, not the rule. Depending on what specific functionality you want, you might be better served with an app, too.
yeah, i have no issues with my iphone 3gs other than some dropped calls here and there. i do want to switch to verizon, simply for their talk quality. its the best in my region. i have noone to do the face to face talking with and some of the other gadgets the 4 has. i can wait i think. but thats my personal phone. for work, im still having trouble figuring what smart phone to get. are the windows phones good? i want something that speaks pc language. thats why i've been leaning towards the droids. something that can maybe read pdf's...or M$ office doc's in an email. somehoing that can DL, read these attachments. and i do a lot of picture taking with my phone, so one of the 8 mp deals make sense for me...so long as they are easily emailed and attachments and what not are easy to add. not to mention, i'd like the pc version of something that comes remotely close to the way an iphone links up to a macbook. so what phone would do that the best with a pc?
Better than Windows Mobile 6, but still not very good. Sort of like how IE7 and IE8 are better than IE6, but there’s still no reason to use either. The iPhone does all of the above. Don’t fall into the megapixel trap. When you’re dealing with lenses as small as those found on a cell phone, megapixels can only do so much for image quality, because there’s only so much light that can be captured. The iPhone!
Android photos on my Evo are great... here are some samples... http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/0b5c357e.jpg http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/IMAG0041.jpg http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/IMAG0084.jpg http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/IMAG0046.jpg (they are large, didn't want to post them full sized) the point is, basically anything you can do on an iphone, you can do on an android... but with the android you are not as handcuffed with what you can do with your phone like with an apple product... -want an extended life battery for a long weekend trip? sure you can switch batteries on your android -want to completely change your launcher on your phone to customize how you want the phone to look and act, there are tons of launchers on the market for free, you can even get ones to emulate an iPhone -want to be able to view websites like on your computer with full capabilities, or also view others like on an iphone/android/ipad/etc, you can switch at your leisure and control that yourself -want widgets or other updating services you use regularly right on your main home screen, or even your lock screen, piece of cake with android -do you use google much? if you're like me with a gmail, and google calender, and everything google, android is the way to go with seamless integration with google making my life much easier to keep updated on my PC as well as on my phone -don't limit yourself to one phone... fine you get an iphone and you like the operating system, well then that's your only option... with android, you can learn the OS and have dozens of phones to choose from with still being on the android platform I can go on and on, but the moral is android is just a smarter option to me... ive had both and can say im much happier with android...
Are all android "systems" the same? Saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc yesterday which is due for release in April and it looks gorgeous but is using android 2.3 "gingerbread"...??
Windows phones are fine if you like windows pc's. Everyone has their own preferences. I use my droid for personal (sharp camera, great browser speed, read PDF's/attachments/can purchase stuff for editing excel if needed, and flash support) and work gives me a blackberry. Windows integrates well with Windows PC's or MS Office but I think Google integrates even easier with google calender etc. No, there's android 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, and soon 2.3. 2.1 and below to me is kinda worthless as the browsing and everything else is better on 2.2.
Currently, only android phones with 2.2 or above support flash. It does kill battery life but if you really want flash like I did, then its worth it in my opinion.
well that's just an updated version... it'll have new bells and whistles but the foundation is still the same... if you know how to use 2.1, you knew how to use 2.2, and you'll know how to use 2.3... might need to learn about new features, but its just an upgrade... now different carriers will throw their own added things into the android mix, my HTC android has whats called Sense which is a series of widgets and other options with the phones, my wife's Droid X which is made by Motorola doesn't have that, but has their own widgets, but again the Android operating system is still the same... Also you may see different Android phones and they all look completely different, but thats because of the customization options Android allows... again my screen can look completely different from week to week as i even play with mine its gone from this http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/ScreenShot.png to this http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7436/screenshotost.png to right now this http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/kegacide/ScreenShot-1.png and a million of different things in between... but again once you know Android operating system you'll be fine with the different updated versions
FUD is bad. The iPhone has best in class battery life; no need to swap batteries to begin with, assuming you’re not going somewhere away from civilization and power sockets. If you are, then just get a case with an external battery. Problem solved. So, jailbreak. Here’s what my iPhone looks like right now: Blatantly false. The sites themselves control what you see through a technique called sniffing; they read the user agent string from your web browser which identifies the browser, version, and operating system you’re using. Then they redirect you to whichever site they want you to see. Your classification of this as some inherent advantage for an Android phone over an iPhone is false. Site operators, not Google or Apple, decide what you see. You mean like this? This is entirely true. Android integrates better with Google’s services than iOS does. Of course, you would expect that, since Google makes Android. If you rely totally on Google’s online services, then yes, Android should be given serious consideration. Makes no sense. Who wants to carry around more than one phone? Also, who needs to “learn the OS” of a cell phone they don’t plan to use? There’s no practical value there, even for IT professionals.
lol@external battery, sounds convenient not everyone wants to jailbreak, sucks you need to do that to make you're phone semi-customizable sigh... Android browsers allow you to change what classification the website sees, I can come here and see the mobile version, press one button and the site will refresh like I'm on a desktop, maybe apple browsers have that, but based on you're reply seems unlikely Doesn't look like much of a widget, but again get that without jailbreaking, and I doubt you'll find that stuff in you're app store I mean ever, not at the same time, lol... You have choices of android phones, not like Iphone where it's, well, just one choice... You use android and you have choices, now and in the future Sent from my Evo
Plugs into the USB slot on the bottom, very simple. Most if not all double as a case. Like this. True, not everyone wants to jailbreak. Not everyone wants to radically customize their phone, either. It goes both ways. I can visit the forums on my iPhone and I get the full version without needing to do a thing. If you want to switch user agents, there are other browsers available. Not sure why you would want to do that, but it’s an option. Since when is the standard “do it without jailbreaking”? Either you can do it or you can’t. Stop moving the goalposts. “One choice”? Uh… even setting aside the fact that you can buy four different models of iPhone and can pick between two carriers, how is this possibly true? When someone makes a decision to buy a phone, their actual choices are: iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm, Nokia/Symbian, or a dumbphone. When you present Android as having multiple choices, what you’re really saying is that Android is a complex market subsegment; the customer has to compare and contrast the differences in vendors, handset capabilities, UIs, Android versions, and data plans. That’s not choice, that’s complexity.
wonderful, still 100x less convenient than just popping in another battery... i didn't get into radical at all... please if you want to get into custom Rom's and Kernal's with android this thread would be a joke, iPhone would look dumb and some people may not want the full version, what if you are in an area where the signal is weak and things are slow, maybe the mobile version is better... options aren't a bad thing you know.... because we're not talking about jailbreaking, or unlocking the phones... those were never the goal posts... again if you wanted to get into that the iPhone would look even less powerful/useful/quality... What i am saying is by being someone who uses and is comfortable with the Android OS, when i want a new phone i have many more options... do i want a slide out keyboard because the touchscreen doesn't work well with my fat fingers? do i want a blackberry style keyboard because thats what im comfortable with? do i want a front facing camera or would i never use it? do i want to pay extra for a better stock camera or am i some photography expert who has a sick camera and would never use the phones? I have those options... with iPhone my options are how many Gigs do i want, great... maybe its just me but i dont enjoy being limited, not everyone wants to be told what features they are allowed to have or use with a phone capable of so much more... i enjoy options and choices to fit me... some people will fit the mold of what apple tells you to be/use thats fine.. just not for me
Attaching a case is LESS convenient? In what universe? If your standard is to customize a phone’s interface beyond what I’ve shown in my two screenshots, then yes, you are getting into radical territory: you’re talking about basically replacing the entire UI, rather than just the chrome. Tapatalk. Or drop an M in place of the WWW in the URL. Problem solved. You’re holding up customization as an advantage Android has over the iPhone. I’ve proven that not to be the case with two simple screenshots. Congratulations, you are a member of about 0.1% of the buying public. Good thing the iPhone is in no way limiting. The iPhone in general and iOS in specific are actually responsible for quite a bit of new ways to use technology. But from the way you speak of the iPhone and iOS, it’s pretty clear you’ve swallowed some marketing lines and haven’t seriously used the devices in question. Maybe you’ve even bought into the idea that Android is open. Well, carry on.
and you appear to be a member of the 60% of the sheep... stick with your apple, let Jobs tell you what you can and can't do with a cell phone, and be in your ignorant bliss... i'll take options and decide what I want on my own...
In the end, all you have left is ad hominem. Should have had the Super Bowl down here. The weather was perfect all week.
Desides, Which theme are you using? Where can I get your theme? was it free or paid? I'm using Nine HD & SlantedLock for my lockscreen.
I'll be picking up a new phone in a couple weeks. Going with the Samsung Galaxy S (called the 'Vibrant' version up here). http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/.../GT-I9000HKABMC/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail Android 2.2, 4" AMOLED screen, 1ghz processor so it's future proofed to Android updates and comes with 16gb's of internal memory. Just too bad the data plans up in Canada are nuts cost wise.
Local Verizon is soldout of Thunderbolts, suppose to get some more in this week. Still looking to see if anyone has one yet and what they think.
I rooted my EVO 4G and its so much better. battery life is good, took out all the useless apps and makes it run so much faster
I know several people with this phone and it is beautiful. Excellent choice. I'll be upgrading to the EVO 3D when it comes out this summer. Pumped.
I got the galaxy s 4g and love it. I have no trouble streaming flash video, I had heard some complaints, but I have no problems. The samsungs have a nice gpu and flash does a lot of its work with the gpu so that may explain it. I stream cnn live, southpark studios, and have streamed espn on some of those tv online sites all while on the train going to work. I average 5mps down on 4g, and get 4g where I was on edge before. Love the phone. Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
Down to two choices next month, either Sony Ericsson Arc on android or HTC HD7 Windows phone - arc looks fantastic but xbox via WP7 has an apppeal.
same here, though i love my current Evo, one running gingerbread with a better screen and faster processor gets me aroused not too sure about this 3D nonsense, but we'll see how that works when it comes out...
The only downside is that when a new OS update is released, you have to wait for that to be jailbroken, assuming you want to continue to operate in jailbroken mode.
