Let me caution Dolfans though, this is just kicking the tires, with virtually the entire NFL in Indy nothing will happen anytime soon. And knowing Ireland, even if an offer is made it probably will not be the best offer he may receive, forcing him to decide if he wants to play in his adopted hometown, or not, that is how they did Jason Taylor when the Redskins cut him, Shockey will be no different imo.
Well if he does have an offer, even if it's lowball, he'll probably accept it. Having been released, he's eligible to sign now and if he does so, he has job security in the event of a lockout. Combine that with the perk of living and playing in Miami again, and I think he's as good as ours.
Just sayin' Ireland is tiiiiggghhhttt with the checks, Shockey will look around for a bit as a 2 million dollar paycut is not easily swallowed.
And TBH, if we have to roll with Henne in 2011, Shockey is a better safety blanket than Fasano. Every young Qb needs one.
My thoughts exactly. It almost makes me feel like this FO is maybe content picking where they are in the first round too if they ink Shockey because it helps fill a position of need, and still allows us to take a really talented player in the first round... say... Ingram.. However, that being said, it would also be nice to sign Shockey, trade down a bit, pick later in the first, then pick up a second as well to still fill TE, but give us even more options with the draft too. Shockey's best years are behind him I'd say, but he's still better than anything we have at TE IMO, so its a win win for us really.
Well B27, we'd already have Fasano, so we'd be looking at drafting a #3 Te, and those cats normally are not even active on game days. What I'd really like is if we go to a Feature Back system, Fasano and Shockey would be nice bookend blocking Te's.
I think it would be a great move to sign the guy. If they carry 3 TE's and don't get crazy like they did last year, they can use Shockey effectively. They can still keep Fasano and a guy like Heynos for blocking and use Shockey less as a full-time TE - he would be a great asset in the passing game.
Shockey is an upgrade over what we have when he's healthy, just about any warm body would be. But he's not the seam buster that I think we need & I doubt he'd beat out Fasano or take kindly to not not starting. JMO.
Could do all sorts of things with he and fasano, line up in the backfield, WC Tackles, HBack duty, etc. Interesting that Daboll got the most out of Ben Watson in Cleveland in 2010.
As long as it's a $2-3 million deal, I think it's a no brainer. All you're doing is taking an early opportunity to scratch a position off the Draft board, knowing you have limited picks and a lot of holes to fill.
agreed, the question for me is $$$$$ .... not sure i'd go higher than 2 MIL though .... maybe 1 MIL bonus IF he lasts the entire season.
I think this could go either way. Could be a great signing or could turn out to be a bust. Let's hope he plays like he has something to prove.....that is if we end up signing of course
Exactly! This team has plenty of larger needs anyway. Three FA Rb's, and an offensive line that's not settled. A KR/PR, the need for two Qb's, some speed at wideout, and maybe another pass rusher. With how many picks? lol
I could see a healthy Corey Sheets winning the Returner job Ozman, in a sort of Darren Sproiles role.
I Agree, I havent given up On Korey Sheets Yet, I Sure Hope he didnt lose any speed while on IR, He could be very productive for us as a Change of Pace Back and Returner
Yeah we could see them sign a couple of positions and Running back would be a good idea so they don't need to waste two picks in the draft.
Bring him on board it won't hurt. After he get's injured in game 9,Fasano's fantasy value will soar. (or is that sour or sore?)
If we do sign him, I think Fasano is still the starter, but Shockey would give us more talented depth when healthy than we've had in a while.
I could really see either one doing 3 different jobs, and think Shockey has more of a knack for getting down the field than Fasano.
This is a move in the right direction. Hopefully with him wanting to return to south Fla anyway the price will be right. I think we have finally made a move that we can be proud of. Shockey is a great player.
I could certainly be wrong here, but i think that Shockey will be used as the #2 tight end. I am a little surprised so many ppl are looking at him as the starter. Granted he is a big name and is used to starting, Fasano is younger, the FO seems to like him, and they just extended him. I see shockey being the downfield pass catching guy that david martin used to be. I think Fasano + Shockey in double TE sets is a win win for the phins. . . knowing this FO he is coming in to "compete" and will most likely wind up being the #2 guy - which is a GREAT move imo.
Sign him right away. Fasano is too inconsistent to be depended on to be our full-time starter at TE. But as a #2 he'd be fine. Shockey would open up this offense in ways that would benefit all aspects of it. Whoever our QB is going to be is going to need a valuable safety net and Jeremy fills that role.
I had inside linebacker and Tight end being accounted for thru free agency, I wanted Owen Daniels and Chad Greenway..Greenway was tagged, I'll take the Shockster.
Well you have to figure we should know by the end of the day if he'll be a Dolphin. Gotta figure Drew already has it ready to sign and submit if negotiations continue to go as poorly as they are before the midnight hour.
He tweeted: Be interesting to see if the Panthers seriously try to sign him as they are being really cheap this offseason, which hopefully means we have an inside track on him.
I just can't believe he'd go to Carolina over Miami. There's a lot of perks for taking the hometown discount especially in South Beach.
