A very long article, or perhaps a scouting report, that has either next to nothing or actually nothing to it in regards to his ability to read defenses, either at a college level or as projected to the NFL. That strikes me as a bit odd. The shadow of Jamarcus Russell will weigh on him a bit as well imo. He might turn out to be great, who knows. Arm/accuracy/aptitude for the pro game- Cam has a great arm and seems plenty accurate to me- the last one is the most important at this stage of his evaluation and the facet that most calls out for dissection. I'm still rolling with Christain Ponder and Andy Dalton in this draft.

It was a good article nonetheless.

SEC QBs with tremendous size and arms who will have questions about how they handle the crucial mental aspects of playing QB in the NFL. You could say the same about so many other top flight QB's coming out of college, Vince Young, Ryan Leaf and Jake Locker come to mind, also the Kentucky QB who went #1 to Cleveland about a decade ago. Just remembered- Tim Couch.

I can see it coming already- a hyped up "let's draft Cam Newton" rally on this site reminiscent of the ludicrous Ted Ginn overhyping a few years back. Of course there are no comparisons between Jamarcus Russell and Cam Newton, just as Ted Ginn and and Percy Harvin were, conversely and after all, the same player. And the world spins round once again... The bottom line is this- if a guy as physically talented and as dominant in college as Vince Young and to a lesser extent Jamarcus Russell can fail, it can happen to just about anyone else with that kind of talent. And for the record I don't like "Uncle Ricos" throwing motion but he can deliver the ball well enough. Cam Newton might turn out to be fantastic, but how you can discuss that possibility without addressing the mental aspect in depth, or at least as thoroughly as so many other aspects of his game/life in a tremendously long and otherwise well researched article, is beyond me.

I think the last frenzy over a QB was Brady Quinn, which had the whole (even the Guru's) chat room salivating when Quinn was there when Miami picked, and then scrambling/screaming when Ginn's name was called. Percy Harvin was the same draft?

Yeah, and before that the last frenzy was over Aaron Rodgers, and before that Phil Rivers, and before that Drew Brees. It's nice to arbitrarily and vaguely decide who 'they' are and then point out moments when 'they' were wrong while leaving out moments when 'they' were right.

You must forgive if the rest of us would prefer to traffic in facts and details.

That's comical given your comments about Harvin and defense thereof of your historical revisionist pal a couple of years ago on finheaven as per that year's blog post in the online sun sentinel. You chucked facts and details down the toilet pretty conveniently then, but I'm sure you don't recall. The real point of my original comment that you're referring to, not your pablum that I'm responding to now, is that it's comical to have someone comment about the absurdity of comparing Cam Newton to Jamarcus Russell who a couple of years earler had equated Percy Harvin to Ted Ginn- just a classic. And you- facts and details? Tebow sucks but I'll cover my *** and say that the Vikings might draft him in the first, although you suspect that he might end up as a Full Back or Tight End- if I recall that part correctly Rocks, glass houses, etc.

Anyway, back to the original point- nice article, glaring omission as per Newton and the mental aspect of the game. And as usual commenting on one of these particular threads was a mistake, my bad. It began with the original Russell comment on the other thread, from someone who- not Rafael- probably can't throw a football 40 yards and is, as all of us, a questionable judge of QB talent. Just don't preach to me about facts and details, you lost that right when you took your pants down a couple of years ago.

Boy, you have an AWFUL memory. Seriously. Almost none of these rocks you're throwing are landing. When did I compare Percy Harvin to Ted Ginn? When did I say that Tebow will be a Full Back or Tight End? You're not getting any of this right.

Says the pantless one making nonsensical accusations.

Yeah, I'd say you made a mistake in commenting in "one of these" threads. I assume by "one of these" you meant threads where people actually speak intelligently, tell the truth, and make sense.

I missed the rest of this post/thread's point, but I feel I should probably come clean and admit that my shoulder is fairly shot and that I doubt I can throw football 40 yards anymore. Actually I never could throw very far so I probably shouldn't blame the shoulder.

It wasn't you, it was your defense of such comments and subsequent retractions that tainted you. You can permanently put down the soapbox when it comes to facts and details. You gave up wearing the metaphorical pants quite some time ago, so live with it. This all goes back to the folly of someone- not you- referring to the ignorance of comparing Russell to Newton who himself had equated Harvin to Ginn, which is a joke. You lost any right to speak of the truth a couple of years ago, so just live with it.

Whatever dude. None of this stuff referred to you in the first place, you were the secondary lackey chiming in as usual. What DOES apply to you: nice article on Newton, maybe you can complete it by addressing his ability to read defenses and other aspects of his mental approach to the game.

LOL @ Jim going off like Colonel Gadaffi!!!

Because he sort of semi got one thing right but not really once about Tim Tebow. Who, he fails to point out, has had his game TOTALLY deconstructed and rebuilt and still hasn't proven anything worth a damn. But hey, keep grinding Jimbo. Joker.

When can I get a breakdown on how self absorbed, arrogant and in love with himself Cam Newton is? How do we grade that?

As an adamant Cam Newton supporter, I can't help but agree with you. I cringed when I read about that quote. Its one thing to say you're going to be an entertainer, but an icon??? Ugh....

Remind me again what happened to Charlie Ward, Danny Weurfel, Eric Crouch, Chris Wienke, Jason White, and Troy Smith. They'dkill to be entertainers and icons about now.

The Newton quote was clearly not given due context by Peter King. The NFL is entertainment. It's there to entertain the fans. If there were no fans to be entertained, there'd be no NFL. And as for being an icon......who wouldn't stand on the verge of the NFL and not want to be an icon for black people or those who've had trouble and turned their lives around or for whatever.

    Load of old toss.

im well aware of what he said, but thanks. youre the one claiming he is an icon because he has a Heisman on his mantle and a National Championship. many a bust have won a Heisman, including many from a spread College offense. it literally means NOTHING now as he prepares for the draft.

It doesn't mean he is not an icon, right this second.

It doesn't mean anything as he prepares for the draft.

When it comes to playing in the NFL the only quote I can find that actually matters is,

“Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, you look at how good they are every year,” Newton said. “The question is how do they do it? Nothing you can point to but hard work. In the offseason. In the regular season.”

Well even the biggest Cam Newton fan in the world cant see a few red flags arising based on some of his comments and behaviour. This self importance he seems to have is Lebronesque. Heres a thought, accomplish something in the NFL before you start puffing your chest out. Just my 2 cents. I already had questions based on his small sample size and spread offense, but now hes just turning me off as a person. I dont think he will be an elite NFL qb. Said that many times and I stand by it...........

I am not that big of a Cam Newton fan. I am a fan of being reasonable. In context what he said wasn't a big deal at all. In the grand scheme of things, I do admit it isn't the smartest due to the fact that he is now in a situation where every word he speaks will be disected to the point of craziness.

I do not know if he is going to be an elite NFL quarterback. I do not mind the spread offense part of the game, what turns me off is his horrible foot work. Watching him throw the ball it surprises me that the ball is accurate. The only reason I would want Miami to draft him is the fact that the offense will not be boring with Cam Newton at quarterback.

People keep comparing him Russell. I dont get it. I see a bigger, stronger Vince Young personally. Hes the type of talent Id take a risk on in the late 1st and beyond. I think taking him 1st overall or in that neighbourhood is the sign of a desperate team.

It's Clark Judge's business to stir up drama where there is none. I expect this from reporters. But that doesn't mean an NFL team gives a rat's arse how he answered a question pertaining to his record endorsement deal with Under Armour.
