Here's a tuff question for all, especially Phins Phans because of "The Don" & "Dan The Man. There are so many things to consider, stats, longevity, regular season wins, playoff wins, titles, comparing to those in the same time frame, and comparing to those all time. Is Shula the best coach of all time because he won more games that anyone else? Are other coaches better because they won more titles in less time? Is Marino among the best without a title? How much does individual talent matter without it? Should a player like Gayle Sayers, or even a Jim Brown, lose points because they did not play as long as others? Does the era in which a player played make a big difference? Many questions. Answers?
Greatness is getting the absolute peak of your talent and ability. Greatness doesn't have to come from the greatest to ever play the game. Take the 80 Olympic hockey team for example, not the best team, but they reached Greatness.
never get into defaming dolphin icons, very bad medicine sometimes the truth & the reality conflict when it comes to fans love is blind. it is what it is Don Shula & Dan Marino were the best @ what they did in Miami
Greatness is simply dominating the competition .... duration of greatness, # of titles, and # of wins is what truly defines where you stand against other 'greats' 'Dan' had some limitations, but he never won a title because Shula failed on the defensive side of the ball. Shula had such a run from 70-85, but by then all the defenders he had thru the 70s were done. He also got hosed by the defection of Zonk and Warfield to the WFL. The 70s could have and should have been the greatest period of current era Football success (of course it still remains ours) -- even with the emergence of the Steelers. People get enamored with stats in player evaluation and when you don't have the titles and wins ... God love both of them, but someday .... some coach and QB will team up to win 2+ SBs and the legend of Dan and Don will die .... just like that of Griese -- why, because when that FINALLY happens, that generation of bloggers won't know who Dan, Bob or Don were .... except us old timers ....
