Other than Ryan Leaf, name a white QB who has been criticized for being lazy.

I am getting turned off by hearing the term black in the description of the "next supposed-to-be-great black QB."

There are plenty of white QBs that are supposed to be great and however turned out to be Alex Smith or Tim Couch or Heath Shuler or soon to be Jake Locker.

That's news to me. I never heard that. I just googled David Klingler and Lazy and didn't come up with much of anything.

People are quick to criticize blacks as lazy, but never the white guys.

You are correct that there is a difference between defeatist and realistic. No disagreement from me there. I often say I am a realist when it comes to evaluating "my" Miami Dolphins.

So if we don't collapse how do we get in a position to afford the price needed for QB then? I don't know what Miami feels about the top 3 or so QB's this draft . That probably hasn't yet been cemented for them . However if they feel 2 or 3 QB's have the requisite skills and upside to be franchise type QB's , picking at 15 certainly provides the ability to manouvere to a position to acquire one imo.

Obviously how high we have to trade up matters re the price, but say to #9 , #15 , Randy Starks and another pick puts you in range doesn't it? You have real questions on the QB's , I get that , I understand that. Let's say Miami is much more convinced than you that Gabbert , Newton and Mallet are worth a high number one , imo they have the ability to make a trade up happen. They would not have to include every pick , plus more , as you said.

My point , basically , is IF Miami feels it is warranted , they can make a trade up happen and be comfortable with the price they paid.

That is rather funny, see that was BI, before internet, there were these things that crawled out of the primordial stew known as "magazines"..

How in the world did this go from "McNabb needs to be in better condition" to "people say blacks are lazy but never whites"?

    :dunno:

Well should have known, for whatever reason Donovan McNabb is flashpoint in every online discussion where he is somehow involved.

Matt Leinart .... lazy equates to not being focused on what it takes to make it. As I have mentioned many, many times , I have been told that football matters to Cam Newton , that to me indicates he won't be lazy in physical and mental preperation.

Don't label me a black QB dissenter because I correctly stated McNabb has been lazy in his effort to be the best he can be.

Terrel Owens has said McNabb didn't work as hard as he should have. Now that is TO , but still , a teamate. His coach also said it this year .

You are making much more of this than it deserves and McNabbs reputation isn't one of being a dilligent worker physically.

if there is no franchise quality (start the first year types) in the 2011 draft
I would be in favor of taking it on the cheap @ QB with any reasonable veteran
allowing us to quickly rebuild our offense w/o wasting picks, trades & treasure
need to fix the offensive line, acquire a franchise RB & find speed @ WR & ST's

wouldn't pass on CamNewton @ whatever cost, if deemed of authentic, franchise quality
would go after AndrewLuck with whatever was needed in 2012, if Newton is not the one

no reason why either one, being exceptional athletes & franchise quality, couldn't start in year one
as long as they have the coaching, are the real deal & have a competent offense in their support @ their start

Parcells: if they don't bite as pups, they don't bite

have a problem starting a Rookie QB? if he's the right QB, I don't.
here's both sides of the argument:http://www.suite101.com/content/pro-bowl-quarterbacks-rookie-year-a31146

I would not go beyond a 4th round draft pick for any QB without with the capacity to start

You have it backwards. If anything, black quarterbacks get hyped up because of the social conscious there is about wanting a black quarterback to succeed in the NFL. This is why Donovan McNabb is one of the most overrated quarterbacks in NFL history, and also why no one can bring themselves to the fact that Michael Vick was a horrible quarterback prior to this past season and why no one is willing to accept the fact that Vince Young is a terrible quarterback. It is also why Cam Newton is currently rated as a first round prospect. If he were white, no one would be talking about him as being anything more than a third round prospect based on his quarterback skills alone.

Never said they went hand in hand but he has turned into both independent of one another. And the second part I have no idea where you're coming from on that one. Maybe its his "I really don't give a sh*t attitude" that he has developed that makes him appear lazy. He laid down in the Super Bowl, plain and simple and it wasn't the first time. Now those two go hand in hand.

I agree with that, but I also think mcnabb has a unique ego, where he might go rocky balboa if he gets in a situation where hes happy..

Listen man, All iam doing is sifting thru the rubbage of free agents, trying to find something that will ignite both parties.

Mallet I'm sure will be available. I don't think he's worth a first. There will be no need to trade up. The two QBs that are worth a first are the ones I keep saying won't be available. I have been saying for a while now that I expected both of those QBs to be gone by in the top 10 maybe even before #8. If that happens, I don't see Miami having enough ammo to get there. With the new reports that at least six teams have Newton at the top of the draft board, I see the likelihood of them reaching even an area we could trade up to as even more remote.

Tony Romo didn't go from being an undrafted free agent to a top 10 starting quarterback in the NFL because he was lazy. If he had been lazy, he would have never gotten the opportunity. That is one of the differences between a late round or undrafted guy and a first round pick. Just the fact that the team uses a first round pick on a player means that player is going to get a chance regardless. If you are a late round guy, if you don't bust your rear end, you are not even on the roster. I was reading about this the other day. When Dallas first signed Tony Romo, Bill Parcells mentioned that he liked him because he had an analytical mind, that he could handle a lot of things being thrown at him as well as adversity. The guy busted his rear to work on his mechanics and changed his release some in his first three years. In his fourth season, he went into the game during the 5th game of the year, and he has never looked back. Since the 5th game of 2006, Tony Romo has posted a 95 quarterback rating, which is something like the 6th highest rating of any quaterback that has played in 50 or more games since the 2006 season. He has the second highest yards per attempt average during that same time span among the same group of quarterbacks as well.

As far as his athleticism goes, Tony moves around plenty well enough within the pocket.

Whatever you say Rush. McNabb sucks. He was the Big East Player of the Year at Syracuse 3 times in a row because of the liberal media wanting to hype black guys. He led the Eagles to 5 NFC Championship games only because he's black.

Get your head out of your anus, pal. Black guys get all the breaks in this country. Hhahahahaha!

I'm sort of late to this and I don't have the time to read all 139 posts, but what I can say is that I feel Cam Newton is a good quarterback prospect.

I'm not sure why there's a race discussion in 2011. Grow up.

The race discussion pops up when idiots claim Cam lacks the work ethic, mechanics, accuracy, and intelligence to be a NFL QB, when all the objective evidence proves otherwise. Somebody's gotta defend the guy and point the finger at the underlying racism.

That's the typical argument that comes out when someone states they do not like a quarterback that just happens to be black. He doesn't have the work ethic, mechanics, accuracy or intelligence to be a quarterback in the NFL. The only thing him being black has an effect on is the fact that he is constantly overrated by the media.

You need to relax man. Its ridiculous that race was even brought up in this thread. It's got nothing at all to do with it. I personally dont think Newton is going to be a great NFL QB either, and its got nothing to do with the color of his skin. I just haven't seen anything special from him that would make me think otherwise. Others have said as much too and apparently its because of race... so whatever.

Wow man you are being way too dramatic and ridiculous. You think someone is a racist because the don't like Newton's accuracy or mechanics.
I haven't see you give even one reason why you see Newton as a good QB at the next level yet you call people idiots because there opinion is not what you want to hear.
I have to wonder how you walk around in daily life with that giant chip on your shoulder. The only racist one is you.

How do you debate his accuracy? 66% completion rate! Oh, wait, I know...his receivers were 5 yards open on every play against SEC defenses! Ha!

And I'm I'm a racist, I aint the only one. You and KB will be right there next to me!

You give up college stats. It's a different game my friend. I say his accuracy will decrease at the next level and I'm a racist?

You know, Alex Smith completed 66.4% of his passes in a similar offense based around the spread zone read over his final two years of college at Utah, and he also had 47 touchdowns and 7 interceptions over those 24 starts. I guess that means he should have been accurate in the NFL where he has a career 57% completion percentage and has thrown 51 touchdowns to 53 interceptions.

Since 2005, the two WORST first round quarterbacks drafted are Alex Smith and Vince Young, two spread zone read option quarterbacks at the college level. Hmmm. What kind of offense does Cam Newton run at the college level? Uh oh, spread zone read option.

He's currently not even playing football.

In all fairness, that's by choice. He was an athlete coming out of college and everyone knew it.

Today, he's with the MLB's Kansas City Royals' organization.

All I'm saying is that all 32 teams knew what to expect with Pat White. He was projected to go in the 4th-5th. It was a bad pick. Cam is clearly a better quarterback. Simple as that.

No, what I'm saying is nobody in here that I can see has said anything race related with regards to Newton, except you're trying to turn this into a debate over race because some people don't share the same opinion. If you want to make that assumption that its on race, then so be it.

Sure it's by choice. Getting the pee-waddle knocked out of him in the Pitt game
probably convinced him that one of the best aspects of his game would get
him hurt. He doesn't have to worry about that in baseball.

As to where he was projected, it was up and down the board. Once TunaCo
got scared that the Pats were going to draft him, they reached. Bellicheck
totally pantsed BP on that one.

As to if Newton is a better QB? Of that I have no doubt. It's hard to get worse.

  38. Hurricane

    Hurricane Guest

He's too small to play quarterback in the NFL. It's not like he was wearing stilts through college and he tricked all the scouts. Everyone knew what Pat was and we simply over-drafted. If he REALLY wanted to, he could've taken on either a Josh Cribbs or Antwaan Randle El-like role in the NFL.

In '04, the LA Angels drafted him in the 4th round (which is pretty high considering they have over 30 rounds, I believe). If he didn't have a better outlook in baseball, he'd have taken the path I speculated above or in the CFL.

What exactly makes Newton a better quarterback, other than the fact that he is bigger and has a better arm?

From a mental standpoint, Newton has the same questions coming out that Pat White had:
    *Can he read coverages?
*Can he go through progressions without getting antsy in the pocket?
*Can he throw the ball accurately from the pocket?
*Can he adjust to a pro style offense?
*Can he adjust to taking snaps from under center?

When you draft Cam Newton, you are drafting him based on the fact that he has impressive physical talent and with the assumption that you will be able to coach him on the mental aspects of the game. That's the approach Miami took when they drafted Pat White. They felt he had some physical talent that they could use, but they also felt like the could coach him from a mechanical standpoint and from a mental standpoint to change his game into more of a drop back passer. After one year working with him, they realized that their assumption was wrong. The old saying is that you cannot change a leopard's spots. Well, you can't change a quarterback's mindset either. Guys like Cam Newton, Pat White, Vince Young, Tim Tebow....they are programmed to run. That is their instinct. You are not going to coach that instinct out of them, and when the heat is on, they will stop thinking and let their instincts take over.

I think Newton is better because he's bigger.

Of course, that's like saying "Bad" is better than "worse".
