NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO SKIP THE WALL OF TEXT, JUST SCROLL DOWN TO THE DEPTH CHART

I decided I want to get together an actual mock off season now that our coaching staff looks like it is finished and in place.

(this is assuming we have a CBA in place and everything is normal with FA, trades, and the draft. This is also sort of my wishlist. I don't see some of it happening, but who knows? After all, I did call Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace beating out Patrick Turner before the season)

    Trades
    Dolphins 1st round pick
    Dolphins 7th round pick

    for

    1st round pick (22-28 range)
    2nd round pick
    6th round pick

    -------------

    Yeremiah Bell

    for

    5th round pick

    -------------

Note: With the first trade...I think it is safe to say that we would all be happy with trading down in the 1st if we pick up a 2nd round pick. I'm hoping we can also move up and get another 6th if we give up our 7th. Hopefully that is realistic, because I love 6th round picks.

The second trade...I know you all love Yeremiah and I love him too. But, he will be 33 years old in a couple of months, is going to make $3.7mil in 2011, and hasn't been very good in coverage. I have never really liked Chris Clemons as a starter, but he improved this year and I love the idea of Reshad Jones at SS. It's a bit risky, but I feel like Jones would be better for us in the long run if he starts now over Bell and I feel like he is better in coverage now than Bell.

    Free Agency
RB, DeAngelo Williams: I'm not 100% sold on him due to his injuries and the fact that he is 28 already. However, I am sold on the fact that he would be an upgrade over both Ronnie and Ricky and he seems to be a fan favorite. I think he would be a solid addition for the right price, because he can both produce on the field and mentor any rookie RB we draft.

WR, James Jones: This is the guy I want. Badly. He has a tendency to drop some big balls (no homo), but so does Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace. Jones can spread the field and be a legitimate deep threat for us.

OLB, Antwan Barnes: Almost his entire career, he has been in a 3-4 defense as an OLB. He could be our solution to adding another pass rusher opposite of Wake in certain situations.

OG, Deuce Lutui: Just a big interior lineman to help with depth. Plus, he could help compete for one of the guard spots.

CB/ST, Corey Graham: I was watching the Bears in the playoffs and this guy really stood out on Special Teams. The announcers were saying how he led the Bears with tackles on special teams and every single punt, he was the first guy down the field. I don't know how good his coverage skills are, but he has to be an upgrade over Nate Ness for the 5th CB job...right?

    Current Dolphins:

Richie Incognito: I'm still interested to see if he can compete for the C job.
Tony McDaniel: Great depth at DE and has been solid for us in the past
Quentin Moses: One more year? He must be doing something right, since he is still hanging around
Paul Soliai: Obvious reasons. PAY THE MAN!
Tyler Thigpen: I don't like him, but he isn't an awful backup
    Lydon Murtha: Depth

    Cuts
RB, Lex Hilliard: He is a good Special Teamer, but that's about it. I want us to get aggressive this off season and build our RBs and WRs off of playmakers, not Special Teamers. Think about it. If we have 9 RBs/WRs activated on gameday right now, 4 of them are special teamers (Cobbs, Hilliard, Moore, and Wallace). How about we get some players that can actually impact the offense at those positions?

WR, Marlon Moore: He was just awful this year. I think he has some upside, but it's going to take him a few years to learn how to run routes and catch the ball.

WR, Roberto Wallace: He is not worth a roster spot. Can't run routes, can't catch the ball, has zero playmaking ability, and wasn't even good on Special Teams this year.

CB, Nate Ness: There is nothing I like about this guy.

CB, Will Allen: For obvious reasons. Looks like the front office is already expected to do so.

CB, Benny Sapp: He was awful in coverage for us this year. Only thing I like about him are his press coverage skills. Not worth the $2mil we are paying him.

LB, Mike Rivera: Room for Antwan Barnes

DE, Ryan Baker: Room for Merling/Dotson/McDaniel

    Draft
1st round- OG, Mike Pouncey. I was iffy on him at first, but thinking about it...as long as we don't try him out at Center, then he could be an incredible Guard for us. I would only want us to draft him as a guard.

Other options: Mark Ingram?, Ryan Williams

2nd round- WR, Titus Young or WR, Jerrel Jernigan. I would take either. I feel like both could be used in many ways, whether they are split out wide opposite of Marshall or used in the slot. Great speed, great athleticism, and both are playmakers. I want Young more, but I think he will be gone early 2nd, so I will have us taking Jernigan for the projected depth chart since he is more realistic in the late 2nd.

Other options: Jonathan Baldwin, Ryan Williams

3rd round- RB, Kendall Hunter. Yes, he is 5'7, but that doesn't matter. See MJD and Ray Rice. I don't think he will be able to carry the load his first couple of seasons, but he can be a great spell back for DeAngelo Williams and see 150-200 touches a year and eventually emerge as a big time RB in the NFL.

Other options: DeMarco Murray, Dion Lewis, Ron Johnson, John Moffitt, Rodney Hudson

4th round- TE, Lance Kendricks. This guy has impressed me since the Arizona State game this year. He's looked good in the Senior Bowl practices as well. This gives Henne yet another target and another playmaker.

Other options: DJ Williams (would love him as well), Noel Devine

5th round- QB, Christian Ponder. I do not want us to draft a QB to replace Henne. But, I think Ponder has 2nd-3rd round talent but could be taken as late as the 5th or even 6th round. Him and Thigpen competing for the 2nd QB spot on the roster could be good.

5th round (fr trade)- CB, Chimdi Chekwa. He is going to fall because of his broken wrist he suffered in the Sugar Bowl, which also caused him to miss the Senior Bowl. This is sort of like the Nolan Carroll situation. A lot of people had him projected as early as the 3rd round, but he will fall due to an injury. I believe he is attending the combine, though.

6th round- WR, Jock Sanders. I love this guy. He is a thicker Noel Devine that is a more polished WR. I'm not saying he is going to jump in and take the #2 spot at WR for us, but we can use him a lot like Dexter McCluster. Lives in the slot and occasionally can line up in the backfield. He has playmaker written all over him.

6th round (fr trade)- SS, Davonte Shannon. He isn't really special or anything. Just a typical late 6th round pick. He could just be a guy that competes for a backup SS spot with Bell leaving and possibly a STs job. Shannon put up some sick numbers at Buffalo the past 3 seasons. 08: 123, 09: 121 tackles, 10: 97 tackles.

    Projected Depth Chart
QB- Chad Henne, Christian Ponder, Tyler Thigpen
RB- DeAngelo Williams, Kendall Hunter, Patrick Cobbs
    FB- Lousaka Polite
WR- Brandon Marshall, Jerrel Jernigan, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, James Jones, Jock Sanders (RB/WR)
TE- Anthony Fasano, Lance Kendricks, Micky Shuler
    LT- Jake Long, Matt Kopa
    LG- Mike Pouncey, Ray Feinga
    C- Joe Berger, Richie Incognito
    RG- John Jerry, Deuce Lutui
    RT- Vernon Carey, Lydon Murtha

DE- Kendall Langford, Tony McDaniel, Lionel Dotson
    NT- Randy Starks, Paul Soliai
    DE- Jared Odrick, Phillip Merling
    OLB- Cam Wake, Antwan Barnes
    ILB- Karlos Dansby, Tim Dobbins
    ILB- Channing Crowder, AJ Edds
OLB- Koa Misi, Ike Alama-Francis, Quentin Moses
CB- Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Nolan Carroll, Chimdi Chekwa, Corey Craham
    SS- Reshad Jones, Jonathan Amaya
    FS- Chris Clemons, Tyron Culver

    K- Dan Carpenter
    P- Brandon Fields
    LS- John Denney

edit: This comes out to 54. wtf? lol w/e

    ==================================

I tried to make this mock off season as realistic as possible. It has us making a ton of changes on offense, but I think in the end all of these changes would benefit Chad Henne and the team as a whole. If you guys see that I made a mistake anywhere, please let me know. It's hard to go through every player's contract and see if they are a FA, how much they are making, what penalties we would get from cutting, etc...I feel like I missed a couple of the lesser known players that have undisclosed contracts. If I did, then I have them being cut.

Let me know what you think.

A solid off season I would be ecstatic if this was what we ended up doing. If I had to make any changes, they would be minimal. The main thing that I don't love is where you have Randy Starks at Nose Tackle, I just hope that experiment is over with. Davonte Shannon is also missing from the depth chart.

I agree that Christian Ponder could be an interesting draft pick for us, pending his passing of a physical and showing that he has recovered his arm strength.

Had to do something whilst watching the Heat lose. sadface

Thanks. Yeah, the depth chart got a little messed up in the end because I completely forgot about Carpenter, Denney, and Fields after I posted. So, I went in and edited a couple of things and still came out to 54. Also, I didn't have Davonte Shannon making the 53 man roster. Maybe PS?

I am up in the air with Starks at NT and DE. We've gotta keep him, that's a no brainer. But, where does he go? I am not sure if Soliai can handle the full starting role. It also looked like Starks completely forgot how to play the DE position through the first 6 games last year. I kind of think we will just roll with Langford/Starks/Odrick as the starters and then rotate Starks in and out of NT/DE in the 3 downlinemen sets. idk so many options there.

Enjoyed the read and I would be happy with the first 3 picks. If we get a 2nd round pick and Titus Young is available I will be severely disappointed if they pass on him. Although if we get a 2nd it would be a late 2nd and I don't see him lasting that long. The one area that looks like a disaster waiting to happen is CB. As much as I want to see Nolan Carroll succeed, he has been average at best in coverage. Our secondary would be a disaster IMO if we lost VD or SM. I think Sapp needs to be retained one more year for this reason unless they get a proven nickel back in FA. Also I would be shocked if Jones isn't retained in GB, especially with Driver's age and knee, but I'm with you 100% on getting rid of Moore and Wallace. Upgrading here should not be hard to do.

    nice effort !

since i don't see a CBA getting done before the draft, it does seem apparent that we'd have to trade down in rd 1 to pick up the 2d (very similar to last year).

additionally, not being able to sign a Mankins, Hicks prior to the draft will likely have some effect on what the FO does (me, i'd roll the dice on FA).

I for one, am not endeared Bell .... and doubt we could even get a 5th for him (we over-rate him these last 2 years). Our only viable trade chips are Starks and Carey.

Don't see us drafting a CB until very late in the draft as a project, or as a UDFA.

Thigpen hasn't shown me anything to warrant him staying as a back-up .... bring in Dixon or Stanton to compete.

Not addressing the starting QB need would keep us in the Luck draw for next year too.

Moore had more drops than catches this season and wasn't even activated half the year. The only reason he got any play time on the field was because we dealt with injuries with Hartline and Marshall for a few games. I much rather have someone like James Jones, who will get on the field and produce.

QB isn't a huge need as of now. This front office needs to give Henne a chance with a healthy supporting cast around him that is worthy of being on the field. Not a bunch of special teamers with a terrible playcaller calling the plays. If Henne lays an egg this year, then yeah, I will be on the bandwagon for a new QB. But, he hasn't even had a legitimate shot yet.

At first, I questioned the Pouncey pick, because a lot of people want to try him out at C. The only way I want him, is if we plug him into a guard spot (preferably LG) and have him work there, while Incognito/Berger compete for the center job. Long-Pouncey-Incog/Berg-Jerry-Carey could be a very good OL if they stay healthy.

They both had drops. Twice this season, Moore took it in the facemask. I think Moore had 7 drops and Wallace had 8 drops or something like that. Pretty bad, considering the time they were on the field.

Btw, Moore had a 32% catch rate. He was tied for dead last in the NFL with catch rate. (minimum 10 passes)

I remember two from Moore, one where the CB had his arm held behind his back, and one bad drop from Thigpen (That was a wounded duck), Wallace I remember dropping some dam easy ones.

Don't forget Moore also had the reverse for a TD called back because of a hold.

Moore has an explosiveness about him, I really see him sticking to the roster.

Wallace had 8 drops? I do not remember Wallace having 8 throws his way.

I think Wallace sticks around for another season. He has the talent that is worth developing.

Maybe not 8, but I think he had something like 15 targets, 6 catches, and I remember at least 3-4 drops. Maybe he finished with around 5-6. Still doesn't take away from the fact that that is too much for the limited time he was on the field and the fact that he cannot run a route.

One drop you remember was a penalty.

I liked his improvement on special teams. Watching him at beginning of the year and watching him at the end was like looking like a different player.

He has 4.4 speed and is big tall receiver. He is worth keeping around at least one more year.

After the Senior Bowl, I am still liking all of my draft picks. Ponder may have helped his stock, so I don't know if he will be available in the 5th.

No idea as to where in the world you get the idea that Wallace had 15 targets, let alone 5-6 drops.

But the stats say he has the most of 4 drops. Of course you only need 2 to have multiple times

I would be really happy with that and I think that trading down our first rounder makes the most sense. Pouncey would be able to play the Center or G position. I like Jernigan the WR from Troy.....fast little receiver who is also great on kickoffs. He would make a great slot receiver like Wes Welker. I would probably go after a QB rather than a RB in round three......Kaepernick or Dalton of TCU. It depends who is still on the board. I don't think TE Lance Kendricks will be there in Round 4, but if he is it would be a steal. If not, Luke Stocker, TE from Tennessee might be around or DJ Williams, TE from Arkansas.

But, I don't know how many chances we could give him with my mock off season. Say, we were to bring in DeAngelo Williams and Kendall Hunter. Unless both guys get injured, do you really see Hilliard getting more than 5-10 touches throughout the season? I'd be willing to bet that Jock Sanders would get more carries at RB than Hilliard.

Odds are, though, less than 20% of all of this will actually happen.
