Well, Irish is on record as saying he wants to acquire a #2 pick in this yr's draft, the problem being this yr only the Pats and SD have an extra #2 pick.

How, exactly, will he go about acquiring a #2?

The problem is, the teams that need a Qb desperately pick ahead of us already, the teams later in the draft who we could trade out with tend to not need a Qb, so why will they move up, costing a #2 pick, to draft at #15?

If a legit Top 10 prospect somehow fell to 15th then we could trade back. Also there are four quality tackles. One or two of them will rise to the status of franchise left tackle by draft day and could be there at 15. But despite what Ireland said (I don't believe a word this time of year) I remain focused on the idea that we should trade up not down and finally get a QB.

Well that is nice, but how exactly would we trade back and with whom?

The best way would be to trade from our DE depth, but obviously there would have to be a CBA. The most likely option would be moving down from 15 like last year.

Hmm, how about the #15 for 2 #2's and a #5? we would essentially be acquiring both SD's #2 picks for our #1 and a #5.

According to the trade value chart we could trade #15 to Baltimore (#26), Atlanta (#27), or Chicago (#29) for their 1st and 2nd.

The Ravens would be interested in Prince Amukamara, Aldon Smith, Cameron Jordan, and Adrian Clayborn.

The Falcons would be interested Julio Jones, Cameron Jordan, Adrian Clayborn, Nate Solder, Tyron Smith, Anthony Castonzo, or Derek Sherrod.

The Bears would be interested in Prince Amukamara, Julio Jones, Nate Solder, Tyron Smith, Anthony Castonzo, or Derek Sherrod.

But as I said before I hope we trade up not down.

Personally I wouldn't do that. I don't want to move out of the 1st round completely and if I did a future 1 or at least a better package than that had better be coming back. And it's not like the Chargers have an early 2nd anyway. You'd be moving from the 15th pick to the 50th pick and only get the 60th pick in exchange? Not worth it at all IMO. The Dolphins would like a 2nd, but not at that expense. 1st rounders are much more valuable than 2nd rounders (obviously). So in no way would I sacrifice a 1st to pick up what's almost a 3rd.

And it's not like the Dolphins have had a whole lot of success in the 2nd round. Under this regime the 1st round has landed the Dolphins Jake Long, Vontae Davis, and Jared Odrick. All 3 pretty good players (we obviously only got a glimpse of Odrick, but he looked good when he was there) Long is already a perrenial Pro Bowler and IMO the other two have a chance at the Pro Bowl at some point. In the 2nd they've gotten Phillip Merling, Chad Henne, Pat White, Sean Smith, and Koa Misi. Potentially 3 of those 5 players will be gone by 2012 and while Smith and Misi might have a shot at the Pro Bowl eventually, their ceiling is probably good but not great players.

Well I am not sure the #15 is more valuable..to us.

For example if we have to use the #15 we can maybe land one starter, if we garner two #2's we can easily land Starters at Running Back and Left Guard.

But you and Big Red are correct 2 #2's would not be quite enough value for the #15, just a thought.

To me, the real problem is only two teams have an additional #2 pick, so unless someone does slide, which could happen if there is a run on Qb's in the #7-#13 slots.

I'd rather get one Pro Bowl caliber player than 2 starters. This team isn't close to contending for a SB so let's try and pick up quality players while we have the chance. If the QBs are gone or the Dolphins feel whichever one is left will not pan out and they are stuck on 15 then IMO you either take a guy like Ingram who should be a stud HB for a while and would instantly make the offense better or you think about one of the tackles and kick Carey inside.

I don't think you need to bank on a team with two 2nd round picks though when looking for a trade partner. If a team likes a player enough they're going to pay to get him. That's what the Chargers did last year for Matthews. There will be some very good players there at 15 no matter how the top 14 picks fall.

I agree that those are the three teams to target for a trade. Of course, the 2nd round pick we get would be at the end of the second round. I wouldn't mind seeing if we could get #36 and #46 away from Denver. Based on the trade value chart, the 15th pick is worth 1050 and the 36th and 46th picks combined are worth 980.

Denver is reportedly looking to move out of their #3 pick to accumulate more choices but I do agree with your premise they would be a logical trade partner based on value.

Eh, I'd take two starters, but the draft is such a crap shoot, the Chargers traded down for Ryan Matthews and he had little impact in 2010.

To me, the offense needs such an injection of talent that 2 starters would help more than one really good #15 pick.

Let's talk turkey here, on Offense you can aim in almost any direction and upgrade the unit as a whole, at #15 with no #2 pick, we may draft a stud but be forced to wait until rd #3 to even try to upgrade Left guard or Running Back or #2 Te, or Center or what have you.

I'd rather add say Wisniewski and Leshoure over say just Ingram.

No CBA no players though, otherwise their #2 and Orton and Eddie Royal or DJ Williams and to me that would also make sense.

As for the Ravens, by now I'd think they would be happy to unload Jared Gaither whom we could use.

Yeah pod I know all about the CBA stuff but if I would like to see Orton here if we move out of the 15.
KB had the best idea I've seen yet with the Denver scenario.

Have to agree about KB's take, but if players could be moved I'd have to wonder what some of Db's value is?

Imho Sean Smith should be trade bait, Denver will need a Cb as Champ Bailey is not being negotiated with atm, but I also suspect after what Fox went through in Carolina last season Kyle Orton is not leaving Denver.

We have the 15th pick. To me if Denver enters the arena it's what they would give us not the other way around. As KB said the value of that pick is close to Denver's 36 and 46. No need for us to think about trading Sean Smith.

Maybe, I was more or less speculating on Sean Smith's value in trade most do not realize it but by the end of the season SS24 was grading out higher than VD whose game really fell off towards the end of the yr.

I suspect if they look for a Veteran Stopgap Kerry Collins would be on the short list, a sort of older version of Chad Henne.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think bringing in two starters upgrades the team all that much. How much better will Leshoure be than Ronnie Brown? Wisniewski over Berger/Incognito? They're probably upgrades, but by how much? I'd rather greatly upgrade at one position this year and next year greatly upgrade at the next.

Wisniewski at LG, Incognito at C, our oline problems will be solved, Leshoure would be fresh legs behind the rebuilt Oline, voila! Running game back in business.

That would cure an awful lot of ills for the offense, compared to say Ingram and the 4th best LG prospect at #78 or so.

An inconvenient factoid from 2010 is the passing game was pretty much were it was in 09, Henne was the same Qb only with 6 int's that were not solely on his decisions, the real problem on the offense is the running game which basically collapsed in 2010, until that is fixed who plays Qb will not matter very much..imho.

To heck with the trade chart.

Some of the teams picking early in the 1st will pass on a QB even though they need one.

I'd settle with taking one of their early 2nds, early 3rd, and maybe a player, future pick, or 5th.

My first pick would then be either Rudolph, Ryan Williams, Pouncey, Wisniewski, or one of the top tier tackles if they should fall.
The top of the 3rd would be Jernigan or Titus Young.

I respectfully disagree with this. Our Dline, including the entire rotation, is the strength of our defense. It all starts with our dline, so IMO the last thing we should be doing is weakening our strength to try and build up another area.

I'd entertain the idea of going RT in the first and trading Carey and a future pick to acquire a 2nd.

Ingram alone would do wonders for the running game. Then either address OG in FA or next season and in the long run your team is better off. JMO.

Well, I respect your opinion. I just think when you have a DE rotation of Starks, Langford, McDaniel, Odrick, and Merling, 5 guys who are all capable starters and potentially above average to very good starters you can afford to move one. Eventually your going to have to anyway because you won't be able to afford them all.

Or if a legitimate top 10 player fell to 15 we could select him.

I think far too much is made of "needing" to acquire that 2nd round pick , sure it could be fruitful , but it cold also be a mistake to pass up a big time difference maker . Depth is a positive , but not as much as elite talent imo.

Well, a couple of thoughts on that:

-to me there is no difference between a late #2, say #62 and an early #3 say #70, as there is not a wall that pops up magically in 8 spots so a #2 is not the be all end all

-we have so many needs on offense imho instead of thinking in terms of one player, we should be thinking in terms of "improve the unit overall".

The offense needs an injection of talent everywhere but at Wr, even then if BPA at #15 is a Wr then we should take them, I'd like Julio Jones to try and find that 2k+ all purpose yardage player.

That is an assumption imho we should not make, with Ross's Big Adventure fresh on players minds we will have a rough go in FA this season, so do not take that chance and simply rely on the Draft then fish around in FA to find some guys who will want to play in Miami.

Ross acting like a Teenager who stole the keys to the Gulfstream has repercussions 24/7.

I wasn't even thinking about Merling, but if you want to move him, then be my guest. lol.

And Odrick, too. I've mentioned trading him as well and would take a 3rd for him if we could get it. I thought you were speaking of possibly Langford or Starks, which I'd then have to veto. :tongue2:

I honestly don't think that stuff will factor much into FA. Guys want to play in a city like Miami and guys want to get paid. We already saw Kevin Smith with the "tell Miami to come get me" thing.

I wouldn't trade Odrick. I think he will be the best of all of them and I think he will end up being a very good pick at the end of the 1st round when it's all said and done. I think when you factor in performance, your best bet to get good value while still being able to replace their value will be McDaniel or Starks.
