I've decided to challenge myself over the fall and winter, if I wish to have a frosty adult beverage, I must walk or bike to the local store to purchase it.

The distance is maybe 2 miles tops however the road to go there has:

A 200 yd down slope, a 100 yd hill to climb, and a Crown and a hill at the very top, it appears as if it were a Sky run, loaded at the top, screaming downhill, then a couple of humps to reach the local oasis.

I have a knee that is not 100%, which would be less stressful on it, walking, or mtn biking?

you gonna hang a book bag on the handlebars and make that trip?
    Sounds like a rough ride.
I think you know the answer.

Back is broad and strong..my knee though, is not quite so strong, and the bike ride down there was more or less half riding, half walking.

I suggest biking bro.Much less stressful on your lower limbs.
    Better yet is swimming IMO.

I got wary of getting injured on high impact activities and now I am swimming 3-4 times a week with no injury risk.

    I'd go with biking.

When it was nicer outside and it didn't get dark before 6:00pm I would ride my bike to campus (2.5 mile ride). Of course I had my backpack with me and I would say it's 100 times better (and less stressful on your joints of course) than simply waking. It's also faster so you can enjoy your frosty adult beverages sooner. So if you're going to put your stuff in your backpack, I'd just ride a bike there and back.

Also, you could consider purchasing a road bike... biking is very fun IMO and a road bike would make that travel so much easier than a mountain bike. Make a hobby out of it!

Why in the world would you hang the backpack on your handle bars when you can just wear it? When I rode RAGBRAI in the summer (50-80 miles each day for a week) we would wear backpacks and some even carried everything (tents, sleeping bag, etc.) they needed with them.

"Road Bike", that is one of the things that threw me off when I first started, when I used to ride as youngster, road bikes were "ten speeds" and Mtn Bikes were BMX bikes.

So while I'm trying to rebuild my 10 speed I'm running into lingo issues trying to find a axle for a rim as I have no idea what to ask for, or how to measure the old axle to tell customer service what I need.

And here a light weight road bike makes traveling downhill a bit more interesting than it was a youth in Florida.

Alas, booze also had to go for the most part, I will have some beer for the Dolphins games other than that it is straight up green tea, sometimes with some honey.

Have to say, I don't miss it very much.

You'll burn more by running or a fast walk. As long as your seat height is correct the bike will be less stressful. Set it wrong and you can do just as much if not more damage to your knee than running.

If you're doing short trips on a bike then mountain or road won't make a difference. If you are considering biking as an exercise look for a good used road bike and use the bike shoes with clips. I picked up a nice Cannondale for $200. I have another $100.00 in for the shoes. The pace is night and day riding this on the road compared to my mountain bike.

Both of them are good exercise for your knees but for me I prefer walking so I can jog after when I get bored.
