Isn't Henne's biggest problem his ability to read cover 2? I don't remember for sure, but didn't we see that his good games where he torched the D and we thought he turned the corner were against teams that played man. Then when we played against cover 2 he couldn't do anything. Therefore what I gather is that this guy helped Chad P with the highest career completion percentage read D's and explain how they were going to attack the defense. Therefore is it not plausible that he could help Henne understand how to read and attack the cover 2, which would then change his game significantly?

Agreed. Hiring anyone with a great rep was not going to happen but this was a stretch even in our situation.

However, I apologize if I am not rah-rah-rah over the decision to hire the OC that Hennings offense scored more than in 2009.

Thats a fact. The guy was trash in Cleveland. Period.

Its like when we hired Cam Cam as HC thinking his previous record as a HC (albeit college) wouldn't mean anything. That didnt turn out to well.

Hey...it could be worse...we could be turning into the Bucs of the 80's...but we aren't...right? Well, at least not yet.

Pennington was stop gap and a seasoned vet.... and yes we know that Henne as a young QB struggles against zone coverages.

That's good but Penny saying he learned so much, when he was already pretty good, in ONE YEAR, shows us why Pennington is liked by everyone. He'll ALWAYS say positive things about his teamates and coaches.

    So I don't think he's lying but I don't buy it all...

I don't think Henne had a problem "reading" or diagnosing the Cover 2. The problem was not being able to defeat Cover 2 consistently, and it was the entire offenses problem not just the QB. Ideally you want to run vs a shell look, forcing teams to get out of it, but we couldn't do that. You want to attack the flats on the perimeter, force the CBs to come up and make tackles, our RBs were either too slow to get out there, or stuck in the backfield blocking. You can attack the seams if you have speed at TE or slot WR, we didn't have that either. You can attack outside the numbers at 15-20 yds, but with no TE to threaten the seam and no RBs to threaten the flats, the opposing safeties can cheat to the outside, the CBs can cheat into a deeper drop, and they both take that area away. Lastly, you can have a QB who extends plays by moving in the pocket and allowing the WRs more time to get down field, we didnt have that either. We basically lacked most if not all of the skill sets needed to successfully attack the Cover 2. Hopefully our staff is hard at work on plans to fix it.

As much as I hate Henning, there were a few positives in his system. He was just an awful playcaller and wasn't the most exciting playcaller either. Hopefully he puts together an exciting combination.

For those of you that are calling anyone who is not in favor of this hire, a whiner or any kind of unintelligent football mind, I suggest you read this.

At least most of us try and explain ourselves to a degree. This is the post that should have the most replies in that regard.

LOL, thats not what I was getting at though. It's the hype he is giving Daboll that I do agree with but don't completely buy because he only was with him one season.

Well next time actually ask a question, smartass

You want to sit back and expect some big changes on the horizon based on absolutely nothing, fine. What I see is we almost need another complete offensive rebuild and we're trusting it to the same guys that blew it the first time around.

I've seen this play out before..... it eventually led to 1-15

I have to admit that I never saw this coming. I don't think I have ever heard of Daboll before but after looking at his credentials - signing him really does make good sense.

JS, all I know, is that Pennington had this team fuc$#in ready to explode, I saw it man, I would of bet serious cash on Pennington in that Titan game and the stretch of games that came after to get it done and evelate this teams play..His game was SO what this team needed to find their rhythm and emotion, and Right now, at this point and time, knowing that we beat 3 of the 4 teams in the championship games this weekend, I would say rhythm and emotion is a big part of being successful...Henne was so bad that I think that with Penny and his ability to execute a short to intemediate offense, alongside our defense, gives us the best hope while trying to aquire our QB of the future.

The man wants to come back, he's highly intelligent, I'am sure that he has the best people giving him advice on the comeback, and the soundness of the shoulder, and if after that, that crazy ''eminemin'' bastard wants to go for it, Than call me curious to see what he can do with some weapons and a defense.

As far as his injury, i'am not trying to ignore those circumstances, but I know that I saw something in him that made me feel like his shoulder felt differently this time around, and thats why I said I felt he was coming back, and now he has...iam excited for this reason JS...I would rather try to win with Penny at the helm than any of the free agent QB'S out there, while we go after our rook.

You labeling my post as ''optimistic'' tells me you don't think iam looking at this situation squarely, I disagree with that word, I believe with his knowledge of self and body, and the proper advice from highly trained physicians that are surrounding such a huge decision, I think there is some good info that makes it more realistic than mere optimism would suggest.

Well thats positive to hear from Pennington, but did anyone expect him to really say anything less? Either way, whatever, it is what it is. Hopefully its true, and hopefully Daboll can come in her and really help Chad Henne become a better QB. Realistically that's what has to happen. I think our options of getting another QB in here this year are pretty slim.

Interesting how quickly Pennington offered up his support on this guy, almost like an introduction.

Convenient timing as well, to state in the same breath his decision (which he claims he had already made) to return for one more run at QB.

Could "already" have possibly meant at the same time Daboll was chosen? Perhaps part of an agreement between him and the De-fecta, in exchange for his agreement to come back to try to save thier butts, that unless they had any reason to oppose, HE could select the OC who he wanted to play for, and work with? :headscratch:

Makes sense, but then you do some research on Browns forums, etc and you see things such as this:

"Arrogance and incompetence are the two words I'd use to describe Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll and his offensive staff.

Daboll and Co. came with Eric Mangini from New England via New York.

Within an hour of Mangini being fired, word began leaking out to the press that Daboll did not want to listen to any offensive advice they tried to give him."

    From a Cleveland Browns forum:

MiaDolphan13 wrote: I dont like this hire at all...but is he at least aggressive? and not old school like our old OC?

"He can't put a whole game together. When something works in the first half we stop using it in the 2nd.

He's good with wildcat and trick plays."

Irregardless of the OC hire, its simply frustrating that Sparano remains in the fold. Sure, its easy to sit back and say "things will be different next year -- we want to open it up (on offense)" when your head is on the chopping block. But when push comes to shove in a big spot next year, are we really to believe that Sparano will employ a different philosophy?

I don't buy it. A leopard can't change its spots.

After what I witnessed last year, I honestly cannot envision a productive offense this year under a scenario where Sparano and Henne are once again working in tandem. I'm not sure how anyone could, but that's solely my opinion.

Normally I wouldn't disagree with you. However, in this specific instance, I'd be hard pressed to identify an area where Sparano has grown as a head coach since his arrival in Miami 3 seasons ago.

In my opinion (and let me reiterate that it is strictly my opinion), I don't see any reason to believe Sparano will not revert back to the philosophy that has guided him through the course of his successful career as a coach.

You said people were ignoring facts, I asked what facts, you still haven't answered. Take your time though, I'm not exactly holding my breath. NOBODY has predicted any big changes based on Daboll's hiring. But there are some level headed guys still left, people who don't rush to judge minutes after decisions are made. And then there are those who like to ***** and moan and complain about subjects and decisions they don't even understand. Oh well, free country I guess. But the defense was pretty bad a year ago. Old, slow, bad coordinator, etc. A decent draft, good DC, and a big FA acquisition later, we have a good defense. One offseason, problem solved. So yeah, I think Ireland and Sparano have shown they can fix an area of weakness when they put the necessary resources into doing it. Feel free to continue your whine party though. It's already January, clearly 2011 is a lost cause.
