George Young did same thing to Parcells that Ross did to Sparano

Pretty interesting point. In 1984, after the 83 season in which the Giants went 3-12-1, Young went out and pursued Howard Schnellenberger (who was a hot commodity with the 'Canes at the time) while Parcells was still coach of the Giants. But, he "botched up the deal" and wound up staying the course with Parcells.

    Young Pursued Schnelly

    Pretty interesting.

    The original discussion from PFT:

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/10/parcells-is-proof-that-sparano-situation-could-still-work/

Historical similarities, of course, demonstrate nothing about future success. But, it will be interesting to see if the reprieve - and even if this situation with Ross & Sparano - makes Sparano a better coach.

It will be interesting if Sparano learns anything from this season and changes or improves or if he just says, "I'm gonna do what I always do."

Something tells me that it didn't get nearly the amount of coverage this episode did. Just a hunch ;)

I remember Parcells talking about it.

I forget who he told (Lawrence Taylor), but he talked to a player about it. And he said something to the effect of, "If I'm going to get fired, I'm going to do it my way."

Basically he let it fly and didn't coach scared.

Sparano will learn from this and will improve.

After 2008, I was convinced that Sparano was going to be the best coach since Shula, and would be a fixture here in Miami. I hope I am proven right by Sparano.

Great story and I think that player was Simms btw.

Is TS the BP jr. that we hope he is or just the guy BP thought he was? Only the 2011 season will tell but who he hires as his offensive staff and who he demands gets drafted will give us advanced notice as to the direction we go!

A lot is being made of this tidbit of Parcells life...I don't know that it will make a difference for Tony...he still doesn't have a QB, his OC and QB coach positions are in flux right now, he's been put on the hot seat to produce or else despite the "I'm sorry I embarrassed you publicly" contract extension, his interior OL is a joke and the top 2 RBs, starting TE, starting FB, the punter (arguably our POY), and the LS are all FAs... He'll have to suddenly become BB to improve this lot...

As NJ Larry said, Fasano and Polite are not free agents. Beyond that, Fields will almost assuredly be re-signed, Ronnie could be back for a small contract (like Channing Crowder), and fixing the interior OL shouldn’t be a challenge (sign Mankins or Nicks at LG, draft a C, and let Incognito compete either at C or his natural position of RG).

The real problem is quarterback. And the good news is that Dan Henning and David Lee are no longer present in the war room on draft day to convince Ireland that they can coach a certain QB prospect up.
