On THIS team............Lousy. As a QB coach, on this team............lousy. If this team decided to pay him big bucks to PLAY.......the argument of ' not wanting to waste money' by Ross goes out the window.
There is a POSSIBLE difference in Penny checking down and Henne checking down and the reason there is so much difference in the outcome of the play. Chad, being so smart etc. gets the ball out at the proper time, either because of coverage or something else, for the short pass to make some YAC. Henne SEEMS to check down because he is afraid to make a mistake. There is a method to the madness when Penne goes short. Henne...........not so much.

    then in post #40
Or just being blind to his potential of being a coach on your end?

    PS

Name one coach that ever started coaching with experience? They all had to take that first job.

And penny was coaching on the sidelines after his surgery.

I'm not saying he is going to be a great coach or a coach on our staff, but I'm not blind to the fact the guy has potential either.

    So which is it?

Why stop there? Hell, Dan Marino's shoulder is healthier than Pennington's. Let's bring him back to play QB!

Dead serious: I bet he could still throw for 3,000 yards if we could put the best offensive line in the world in front of him.

Jets did it with Sanchez, Ravens with Flacco.

I guess you skipped over the part that Henne was coached to play this way by the staff. Sparano said it all preseason, it had nothing to do with Penny teaching him that way, it was Henning and Sparano's philosophies.

Well if he was coaching, he did a piss poor job.....

And most coaches start out as an assistant to a coach.....and I'm not saying he doesn't have potential, just being realistic. We're in a desperate situation and you want to give a guy his first cup of coffee?

How would I feel if Pennington came back? About the same as I would if Henning came back. There would be meetings and a 12 step process for me, I'm sure.

Sanchez and his 63 QB rating with 12 TDs and 20 INTs impacted his rookie year? I strongly disagree with that. As do I disagree about 22nd ranked Flacco. Not to mention these teams had NEW coaches who wanted "their" guy, rather than being preexisting coaches whose jobs were in jeopardy.

NY had the #1 ranked ground game & #1 ranked scoring defense that allowed 14.8 PPG during Sanchez's rookie year. Ryan & NY could afford to let a QB develop b/c there was less pressure on the QB.

Ditto for Balt's 4th ranked ground game & defense that allowed 15 PPG during Flacco's rookie year.

And ditto for Atlanta's 2nd ranked ground game & 11th ranked defense during Ryan's rookie year under a new coach who wanted "his" QB.

We have one of the worst ground games in the league along with a coach whose job is in jeopardy. We're in an entirely different situation right now.

I didnt dislike pennington. He may not be Marino however the team responded well to him. They seemed to settle down and focus with him at the QB position. I think there was a level of trust there that the other QB's didnt have. I would prefer him as a coach with a young player to teach.

If there is a new rule that says the Qb cannot be touched, I'd say cool.

Pennington as a coach? Sure. Why not. I think he's got a lot of traits that lend to being a good coach. Pennington as a QB? Mmmm...not so much. Age + shoulder injuries = time to retire.

just no way ...... what are the odds his arm could hold up .... it's almost like creating a Favre scenario here -- and it's something we just don't need.

not blaming him at all - but he is the reason we are in the position we are in at QB. Henne may not ever recover from this year, but its on CP and this regime that they got what they got this year .... it was certainly one of those, be careful what you ask for scenarios.
