If you think thats equivalent to past racism you are sadly mistaken. And if abolition had countered the past as you had said then there would have been no need for the civil right movement. So no you are wrong. It doesn't make anyone look like a puppet or a fool, you view it as such because you don't like the rule.
If it was the main reason or even anywhere close to it then the Rooney's are more stupid than I give them credit for (Passing on both Johnny U and Dan "the man" come to mind). Mike Tomlin is a hell of a good coach and for him, if in fact he did say this, to claim that his skin color ment more than the grey matter between his ears shocks me no end. Maybe he's not the man I thought he was, sad!
This is NOT true! I am very pro Obama and support the hell out of him even through tough times. He is doing the best job he can and the Republicans are giving him the hardest path possible in terms of him getting the things he wants done. I think the Rooney rule is crap. There's more white coaches, and more black players. That's why you see more white coaches and more black players. Talent is talent. If your talented, you're going to get the job. Don't you think if Dungy decided to come back, he would be just about as coveted as Cowher? I do, and rightfully so. Race is overrated. You're either good or you're not. The good teams are the ones who hire the best guy, regardless of what they look like on the outside. This isn't the 60s.
I believe Dr. Martin Luther King & Adam Smith were great men & neither one a Dolphin fan ... there it is the end of my philosophical meandering this is a Dolphin Forum & I am a Dolfan not a candidate for office the vestiges of prejudice are as difficult, inappropriate & intense from black to white as white to black however, it cannot be over-stated the progress we have made as a people in this regard since my off-spring are neither Black nor White nor Hispanic but a mix I can only hope for a kinder tomorrow grow up, get over it, whatever, move on this is 2011 not 1911, we have bigger fish to fry speaking of fish not to worry a hundred years from now, you'll all look like a bunch of Brazilians meanwhile lets go with the Red, White & Blue and the Aqua & Orange commonality & cooperation win out every time, just keep drawing that circle a little bigger
There are only 5 black HCs in the NFL. There are 32 teams. You're telling me that only 5 black guys are talented enough to get the job. The rest aren't? Also, in the history of the NFL, there have only been THREE black GMs. Oh sure, its all about merit and the NFL is color blind, my ***!
This isnt a black or white thing GH, of course black guys are fit to be great coaches.... However coaching in the league today is all politics, the same crapheads (Mangini etc) get canned and come back.....good ole boy network...
Harbaugh is not going to leave 3 mil/yr on the table because he cant wait for the phins to interview a minority coach. That just plain stupid.
That's a distinction without much of a difference. The good-ole-boy network IS about black and white. Its like saying the Civil War was about state's rights and not slavery.
Oh, enough with the Rooney Rule ****, people. The RR has NEVER kept ONE team from hiring ONE HC they wanted to hire. E.V.E.R.
makes no sense, so in that view guys like Holmgrem, and Parcells are racist?? Because Mike Singletary didnt benefit from the same good ole boy network to get his job, when he obviously cant coach... get out of the 60's bro....most people dont look at black and white the way you do, at least I certainly dont...
which is being racist.... if you say, "I am not even going to hire Perry Fewell because black guys cant coach." is the same as "I am not drafting Cam Newton because black guys cant play the position." the fact is those dude arent insiders to the good ole boy network of coaches...samething in politics, you are hooking your campaign backers before outsiders...all these younger cats did work for the older guys....go look at the resumes of the newer coaches...mostly all worked under a big name years ago....
Maybe your not understanding what im saying by unconsciously... If it was unconsciously, one wouldnt say "I am not even going to hire Perry Fewell because black guys cant coach." or "I am not drafting Cam Newton because black guys cant play the position." What im saying it people would unconsciously pass over minority candidates, meaning they dont even think about race. its natural for them to go straight with the white guy.
yep....thats is exactly it....people who they have worked with from the beginning... now as more and more black, spanish, etc guys have more more opportunities to work and come up through the ranks that has been going on in the past 15 years, and so on....you will start to see more black coaches.... You or me if we coached and got a gig, would immediately hire our friend to fill a position rather than an outsider...nevermind one of a different color...
Freinds Gardenhead & Nappyroots: very reasonable deduction & I agree however eventually talent tends to win out Patriots are are a good example two white players that were in inadvertently "overlooked" 1) Welker's talent @ WR was not totally discovered & exploited until the Patriots found him 2) Danny Woodhead @ RB
Friend jupiterfin: could it be the "Mild Irritant"? give it another read or maybe backtrack to some previous posts to get the flow of the conversation
I really don't know what more we could do in the NFL to erase the illusion of the 'black barrier'. Gosh, when will enough be enough? Black coaches are now winning superbowls dude. When can we finally throw this crutch away and move on with true sportsmanship. I think that regardless of race everyone should be given equal chance. I am all for equal rights, but not so much for special rights. I think the RR was started by a senile old man who was thinking forty years before the decade that he was actually living in. Black dudes are 6% of the total US population (it's true - look it up) do they all have to be in the NFL to remove this stupid RR?
What is it with Dolphins fans having trouble with the "A" and "O" in people's names? Sporano Harbough Sparano Harbaugh lol
Exactly, these guys who want to push the racism deal as far as they can ignore all the advancements and all the programs that actually go well beyond the goal of "racial equality". Racism hasn't dissapeared but it's on an eqaul and common ground for all groups at this point and sometimes very much over policed.
Your right, its not tolerated as much today, but it does exist. The Rooney rule is in place to not tolerate any of it. Hello! You play to win the game! Er....I mean hello! That's why the rule is there!
