I think if you can coach, you can coach. Dave Wannstedt was mediocre in the NFL, mediocre in college. Jimmy great in college, great in the NFL. You could argue Barry Switzer was pretty good in the NFL as well, even if it was with Jimmy's team. Which brings me to my point: It's about the talent. It's why BB sucked in Cleveland before getting great talent in New England.

Not to say some coaches can't squander great talent, but I think the reverse is true that a great coach can fail without it.

Bottom line, if you think Harbaugh is your guy, you back up the Brinks truck IMO.

    All that said......

The REAL bottom line is that we need a quarterback, so we are firing the coach. And just to compound our issues we are going to a guy that has coached quarterbacks for 2 years in the NFL.....................for the Raiders of all teams.

maybe he has some kind of clause in his contract that he can be easily demoted to OL coach. Call it the Parcells clause, as in if BP wanted to coach the team he could have dropped TS to OL coach.

Well then, if we need a QB who would you prefer be the coach to develop him if not Harbaugh? I don't think it's fair to discredit his QB coaching because he worked for the Raiders. I could be wrong, but I don't remember college teams from far and wide offering Andrew Luck a scholarship before he went to Stanford. Something must have happened there.

The cold hard truth is that Head Coaches are married to their QB's. So regardless of who the coach is that will be the case. I feel comfortable with Harbaugh in this regard.

Damn near don't care anymore. That's how big of a farce this has become. I took a step back this morning and thought about it. When you total all the TV in the seats crap, orange carpet, celebrity owners, and now this? This has Daniel Snyder written all over it.

So the schools that made a play for him were Stanford, Rice, Virginia, Northwestern, Oklahoma State and Purdue?

Not exactly powerhouses. I find it hard to believe he was such a highly sought after guy that TEXAS wasn't even on the radar, given that he's from Houston. Or Oklahoma for that matter.

League sources say the 49ers have offered around $4.5 million per season, while the Dolphins offered Gruden $7 million per season, which he rejected to stay at ESPN as an analyst.
Harbaugh is seeking a deal worth around $6.5 million per season, which Pete Carroll received from the Seattle Seahawks last year to leave USC. And while several people close to Harbaugh have advised him against going to the 49ers because of their front-office structure, he has received more favorable reports on Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...erest-from-49ers-dolphins?module=HP_headlines

If Seattle gave Carroll $6.5mil and Ross offered Gruden $7 mil, I'd think he'd give the same offer to Harbaugh...if he really wants the guy that bad.

My question is what can a new coach do? With the collective bargaining agreement expiring and the players well no longer under a contract...you bring in a new staff/philosophy/plays...etc... how do you execute on that? Maybe its best to leave things as is, at least that way when the players come back they already know the system. Before blasting me, they said the exact same thing last night on Inside the NFL...?

Either way, it's fair to say Harbaugh had some hand in developing him no? Kyle Wright and Brock Berlin were the #1 rated HS QB's in the country coming out IIRC.

Not saying that mean he's a shoe-in to do it here, but I definitely have more faith in him developing a young QB than Sparano (or David Lee), who couldn't even seem to get the O-Line solidified after three seasons. JMO.

They have about 60 more days to get the CBA ironed out. I sure hope they do or every team with new coaches, staff etc etc will be behind once they get back to work.

You still have to develop the guy, which Jim did into the #1 prospect. How about the other guys on the list who haven't excelled? How about the 2007 guys whom Luck has surpassed despite being a year younger?

The "experts" on ESPN said they think this will drag out until August...as the two sides are so far apart. So lets say Harbaugh is here, there is no mini-camp, there is no anything and when the players come back, its "Hi, nice to meet you". This to me is most interesting.

I believe Harbaugh coached Rich Gannon when he became MVP. And Gannon wasn't exactly a stud when he came to Oakland.

It's a sticky situation for sure. If the CBA isn't agreed upon, and there is a lock out, a lot of teams will suffer.

I think you have to do what you think is right for your franchise, CBA be damned. If you miss out on a good coach because of something out of your control in the CBA, it could be a serious lost opportunity.

they'll come to an agreement before then, you know why? Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith. Smith took over for Upshaw... if Upshaw was still there, I'd agree... that guy was terrible for the NFL players... TERRIBLE...

depends on what you mean by working... will it increase the value of the Miami Dolphins brand if Ross can pull this off? Don't think anyone can argue it won't. It's the other meaning of success that is the sticking point.

Following reports that the Dolphins are making a major push to hire Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers have started to work on another possible coaching option. And it probably won’t excite 49ers fans much.
The 49ers have reportedly had “initial discussions” with Josh McDaniels, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News.
At first blush, this looks a move aimed towards leverage with Harbaugh. But as Florio wrote last night, there is a belief Harbaugh is looking for $7 million a season. Adam Schefter says the 49ers are “prepared to move on” from Harbaugh because they “won’t compete financially” with the Dolphins if Miami will meet Harbaugh’s price.
