Learns that the NFL isn't for him, misses college, tells everyone, "There is no way I am going to coach Penn St."

I agree 100%. At least the Niners fired their coach before making a run at a new one. Not to impressed how this is turning out.

Classless? Sparano should be grateful he still has a job, business is business bro, Sparano is in this position because he's gone 7-9 2 years straight. IF things were different he wouldnt be in this predicament. Sparano is doing what he should be doing, bending over and take it with no vasoline and pray that Harbaugh, Cowher and Gruden decline.

La Canfora is reporting SF has offered about $4.5 million but Harbaugh wants around $6.5 million.

He also confirms our $7 million offer to Gruden this week.

So from what I gather, our list went like this:

    1) Cowher
    2) Gruden
    3) Harbaugh

Bull****, Sparano is putting up with this for the 3 million dollar payday, Ross did not have the kajones to fire him and pay him for not coaching if he did not land his candidate.

    They did.

But to be fair, Mike Singletary forced their hand with his antics.

If Ross is so displeased about Sparano then why not just fire him?

True, but if Nick Satan and his staff had picked Brees over Culpepper, we would still be loving him and possibly with a Super Bowl ring. You'd hope Harbaugh would be smarter if he came to Miami.

Players might think he has faults, but they do like the guy. Nothing motivates players better than being the under dog. I could see Sparano using this as a motivational tool.

The only problem would be getting a new OC. A young OC who is just looking for his chance would probably work best.

Just to throw this out there. How do we know Sparano wasn't already fired? Maybe it just hasn't been made public yet. Just sayin'.

Because if he fired Sparano before he drug him threw the mud, he would have to pay him 3 million for not coaching without having his coach in place, as it is he maybe can force Sparano to resign and save the 3 million and take that as a discount on the 7-8 million he will offer Harbaugh.

How does Ireland look in all this? He's supposed to be Sparano's boy, they're both Parcells guys, and he's helping to get rid of him to save his own job.

That could be true. It also could turn into the Coughlin situation from a few years ago where he was in danger and wound up making some adjustments in his coaching style that revived him. Maybe Sparano does the same if he is kept. At this point though, it seems unlikely IMO one way or another.

The problem is Sparano and his conservative offensive philosophy. He sets the tone so no matter what the OC goes thru him!

Additionally, part of the issue is that Ross did not want to stand in the way of Michigan's interest.

But I just don't get the approach. They want their cake and to eat it too? It's just crazy, as Byroan notes, that they would make this massive offer a) with Sparano still as coach; and b) with the Rooney rule still there. I mean, they could still get fined and penalized even if they interview a minority candidate.

But, I suspect that Harbaugh will turn them down, to be honest.

Someone needs to fill the spot if a Coach cant be landed. Why blow up the coaches if you cant put in a new coach of your liking.

Well, the 49ers offered 4.5 million, if Ross offers 7-8 we have a nearly holographic situation to the Saban fiasco.

Plus this destroys credibility of the Franchise inside the NFL which imho is what Parcells did offer, now we are back to the circus days..oh joy.

Might be a repo flight Ross has a few private Jets. Also life insurance companies tend to put clauses in policies that prohibits executives from a corporation from all traveling on the same plane.

BTW, any else recall the most wins a College HC moving to the NFL ever had in their first season?

Switzer, but that was a very unique situation, I'd say lil nicky's 9 were probably the most?

You're so sure Ross betters the team with a totally unproven futures commodity?

What track record does Harbaugh have in the NFL? What, other than experience at a west coast
school does Harbaugh bring to the table?

Now that Schefter has relayed that SF won't get into a bidding war with us, we'll find out if Harbaugh really wants this job or not.

The Dolphins don't have credibility because of Parcells anymore like they did in 2008. First of all Parcells bailed at the start of the season to take heat away. Second, the only reason the Dolphins were 7-9 was because of Mike Nolan & Karlos Dansby's defense. The offense was so bad at scoring they only scored a couple points more than the 2007 offense and the final loss to the Pats narrowly avoided being the worst regular season loss in Dolphins history, when the players obviously quit on a chance to go 8-8. When you're that bad it's not ALL the QBs fault.

Basically, Sparano has a choice. He can take all this stuff or he can leave. But the fact is, I suspect he would be happy to take the job as HC for next year if it doesn't work out. So, he stays as the team's 3rd choice? Big deal. How many coaches sign with a team the first time as a team's third or fourth choice after others declined? Happens every year in the NFL.

And, Sparano shouldn't feel bad that the team is looking elsewhere. He knows he's on the razors edge of being fired based on the last two seasons and particularly on how horrific the offense was.

Even if Harbaugh declines them, there is nothing that says they have to let Sparano go. They can simply say, "Look, we did have an interest in Harbaugh. We were not satisfied with the job last year. But, we hope you understand that we want you to come back at this point and this is the last year."

It amazes me that people are all up in arms about this! This also happens every year with free agents when there are starters under contract. If you have a RB under contract and you make a big time offer to a free agent, who then turns it down, do you release the RB? No. You keep him and he knows the team wanted an upgrade. And, the coach has to deal with that. So, if anyone should understand such a scenario - it is a coach. Just as that may often motivate a player to prove a team wrong, so it should motivate a much more mature Sparano should Harbaugh turn the team down.

Sparano can cry about it and quit; or he can recognize why he's in the situation and deal with it. When you have a 4 year deal at $2.7 Million, not state income tax, you have to realize the benefits of that and get some thick skin.

Well, I will say this, Harbaugh will bring a different approach to the offense, because we will not be able to out patriots the patriots, we had an edge, then it became even, then they overtook us this season.

And key pieces remain in place, however he should have fired Sparano, he should have announced a coaching search among other things.

I kept telling folks who would not listen that Ireland was not going anywhere because he was a Peterson protege back in the 90's, in many ways Ireland IS Peterson, which is fine by me, however because Ross won't fire Ireland that means no Bill Cowher which means..we are chasing that unproven college HC with a single good season under his belt.

It's madness, it reminds me of the results of a search cmte when no one can really make a decision.

I'm not sure he's going to be successful, that's why I said "trying". I do see a lot to like in Harbaugh though.

Also, Harbaugh was a successful QB in the NFL, and was a coach for the Raiders, so he does have NFL experience.
