Why not? Every year players are drafted and brought in as free agents to compete with one another. If Manning or Brady were available and were willing to come to Miami do you think the coaches would say, "Thanks, but no thanks. We already have Henne and Thigpen signed to a contract and we don't want to be disrespectful to them." I don't think so. If we can get a better HC. Sign him. If not, keep Sparano. IMO Saprano dug his own grave when he came out (I think it was week 15) and openly supported Henning (Miami was 31st in scoring) and said he wanted him back and thought he has done a great job.. How STUPID is that?
This has been my contention for 2 days. What could be the funnier thing is when Sparano resigns just before the season starts, and Nolan steps down ac DC to take the Asst HC job somewhere else and Ross is really scrambling. That would be the ultimate "up the wazoo".
He got his position by loyalty. It's a trait he values, obviously. You NEVER throw fellow management under the bus.
That's why this whole deal is strange, are we to believe the reports he is looking elsewhere or not ? Are they really credible ? Its not the way I would do business if I owned the team. Its making Ross look like he is an amateur.
Maybe Peterson has orchestrated this whole deal to make Ross look incompetant, Ireland a fool, and Sparano the victim, and then he can swoop in and save the day, and Ross makes him "King of the Dolphins" and then we have Carl Peterson running the franchise...... what a nightmare
There is a big difference between not throwing fellow management under the bus and openly endorsing the job being done when the offense ranks 31st out of 32 teams in scoring. That is just plain STUPID!
There's no other way to to remain loyal. Now, what you do after the curtain is drawn, is you let him know that he needs to retire, or find employment elsewhere, and, make it look like his own idea. That's what loyalty is. You don't do stuff guys flipping burgers would do. You do what professionals do. I am in a managment position now...And even if it was in burger flipping, I would never throw a junior manager under the bus. You don't do that. Ever. Clearly, Henning needs to go. Everyone knows it, everyone sees it....But just like how Mularkey has suddenly become a success? So too, can Henning. Funny how that works, isn't it?
Sparano is not getting a HC job elsewhere anytime soon, if ever again...... IMO he should just be thankful to not already be fired and that he's still in the mix.
Exactly. And if you were "In the mix" wouldn't you fight as hard as you could for your job? I know I would. BTW...He's got a white knight in Parcells...Believe me. He won't be down for long if and when he's outed from Miami. In my line of work we call that haveing a "Jedi master" in your corner. TEach you of loyalty he will. Teach you of his school he will. Never leave you.........
Gimme a break, I have many years in management myself. What I learned not to do is publicly acknowledge a person is doing an excellent job when that person is not! It sends several messages...poor performance is not only acceptable but rewarded. Another being, I am full of **** and you can't trust what I say. Also, dishonesty is encouraged. What happens is I lose the respect of the employees who ARE doing an excellent job. The way to NOT throw him under the bus is to say things that have "TRUTH" to them like, "No one is satisfied with the results this year. Henning, like everyone on this team is giving 100% to turn this around." He could even say, "I believe Henning has the ability to turn this around," if Sparano actually believes it. But to publicly endorse a person whose responsibility ranks 31 out of a possible 32. That is just being an IDIOT! Honestly, I think Sparano believes Henning has done an excellent job. That is why I don't feel bad for Sparano with what is happening. He dug his own grave. He has been a total dumb-***. But Sparano came out and said he has done an excellent job! WTF? 31st out of 32 teams...Again, that is just plain STUPID!
You and I come from different schools then. You never ever toss people under the bus. Never. You show a public face, and, you show a private face. Just like I would never dress down a subordinate at a meeting, I would not dress down a subordinate in the press. If you and the place you work would, then, best of luck. I'm of a different school.
Here's an idea from someone who is IN management (not NFL management) and has to make these kinds of decisions all the time...GO **** YOURSELF, these decisions are never made easily and NEVER due to balls....Hexonx have YOU ever had a grown man cry at your feet when you he started begging for his job which you just told him he no longer has?? I HAVE, and let me tell you it has NOTHING TO DO WITH BALLS.
I've had to relieve men of duty. It's never an easy thing. That's why you keep it private. No matter what he does at your door, you give him an optimistic, but, realistic referance. You keep it private, and, hushed, because that's how you want it to come to you when the hood strapped over your head. That's how I've always seen it.
I agree we look really bad... Chasing after a coach that is about to sign with a team that kicked our butts in the Super Bowl? I know it was a long time ago but you know NFL Films keeps things like that alive. I don't know how many times I've had to watch Roger Craig pumping his knees up and down on that touchdown...
And Parcells has a long memory that is one of the things I don't like about this deal. Instead of having a solid, respected foundation, we look to be run by an overgrown teenager with a large checkbook. Put it this way, think of the best Organizations in the NFL, do you see their owner or even GM making emergency flights out to the west coast to beg a HC to take their job offer? Rooney, Mara, McCaskey?
I'll admit, Ross lost his cool. But, not every guy make sthe right choice all the time. Who knows? He could have been monitoring this board and heard how many of the posters here would "Have no respect" for him if he didn't hire Harbaugh.
Like I said in another thread, it's instant karma for what Sparano did to Henne if he ends up coaching out the rest of his contract...
You can get more specific than "coaches do this to players all the time." Sparano did THIS EXACT SAME THING to Henne this season. He benched him, basically neutering him, and then after Pennington got hurt sent him back out there with his his genitals in a doggy bag and told him to lead the team. If I'm Chad Henne I'm having a nice long laugh at all of this.
This is business and business is ugly...nothing more, nothing less. If it eases your conscience, Ross reached out to the AD at Michigan and made sure they were not actively dealing with Harbaugh prior to moving in.
Where did I once say he didn't care, I think the way this is being handled right now is bad for the organization. As for caring who knows, he wanted to buy a sports team, and the Dolphins were available it wasn't his first choice.
Well if he wasn't looking elsewhere he should tell the media any maybe Sparano. If we are going to move on, move on regardless of how much Sparano gets paid, he isn't going to walk away he has millions of reasons not to, at the same time I find it disgusting they way our front office is handling their business.
Again this has nothing to do with the situation unless you are implying Sparano was crying at Ross's feet, which I highly doubt. Sparano has more than enough money in the bank. To me this is about being professional, which the Dolphins are not. Think what you want, but I have never seen a team start contacting other head coaching candidates while a current head coach was still in that position. What I find amazing is how many people on this board find it acceptable. Seriously let the guy go, he can then at least start looking for another job as well as his assistants, but who is really going to play for Sparano next year knowing he was a last resort choice to keep.
again, its a business as well for the players as for the coaches, do you think player 50-53 enjoy all these workouts of other players during the season, with lots of millions in his pocket, i have a tough time feeling sorry for TS
Exactly. These guys, players and coaches, know this is a business and a high stakes business at that. TS isn't sitting at home crying, he's doing two things, working on things to say to Ross and calling up all of his NFL contacts just in case. These guys know what it takes to stay employed in this league...winning. TS, other than in his 1st season, hasn't won. Now, IMO I think he will be a good coach, but I also realize that Ross is doing what he thinks is best.
What are you talking about, benching a player who is playing bad has nothing to do with what our front office is currently doing. Players get benched all the time that in itself is part of the game, coaches get fired, that is part of the game. Coaches sitting in limbo while they interview other candidates is a whole other thing period!
I think everyone is missing the point, if Sparano was worth keeping they wouldn't be doing this and supporting him, it's obvious they want to move on, so if that's the case let's move on. Trust me Ross can afford to eat a few millions paying off these contracts. My real concern is losing Nolan in this whole mess, and I'm pretty sure Henning wants to be fired so he can collect his check, no way that dude retires cause he is for sure never getting another job.
why not wait if it really happens, then you can always cut him lose, just like with the performers on the field, i think he is only gone if harbaugh doesnt want him, why would he leave he is building something nice
Maybe or maybe he leaves for more money, pretty sure he can get a job elsewhere. Also maybe he is loyal to Sparano and feels whats going on is wrong. Who knows..... Even a friend of mine who is a Pats fan ( I try to not to think about that part) said " why's your team interviewing folks for a head coaching job while they already have someone there...that's just wrong man"
It's easier to have those higher standards when you are managing one of the upper tier organizations. Despite what many of the fans here think, we are not elite. We are barely above the joke level. This organization hasn't been respectable in over 20 years and is the laughingstock of the majority of NFL fans. Ross is a new owner that is trying to turn around a sub-average franchise. If he wants to go over the top a little more, more power to him.
