Not the way I saw it. He went to block as Gabbert started to scramble and then the WR turned around and just stood there while the DB got in front of him. Gabbert tossed it into the DB's hands. Bad decision, yeah, but I don't know what the WR was doing. He was just kind of standing there like "what should I do?". Quarterbacks often make bad throws like that. See the MNF game in Atlanta when Brees flicked it. Sometimes you just try to make a play when you shouldn't. The important thing, for me, is that Gabbert bounced back and showed no effects mentally of the INT.
Oh I'm definitely aware of that, if you read down I address it. It's an issue I've seen many times in Mizzou games this year. Bafflingly, the WRs Danario Alexander and Jared Perry a year ago were quite good at uncovering on the scramble...but these guys suck at it.
That's my take on it as well. I think Gabbert was expecting Kemp to DO something, either come back to him or go vertical. When he didn't do anything I think maybe Gabbert decided he was going to try and squeeze the ball as far off the sideline as possible where Kemp could grab it and still toe tap it. I've actually seen Gabbert do that before. He misfired on the ball, didn't get the placement it needed, but a big part of it was just because Kemp sat there doing nothing which doubtless created hesitation and confusion in Gabbert.
I like this kid, but I don't see anyway he falls to us. If we want him we will have to trade up to get him and we don't have a 2nd rounder this year to help.
The pitfalls of having a QB who has a propensity to scramble. The other offensive players never know where he may be and don't know whether to block for him running or be prepared to catch a pass. Gabbert wants to run a little too much for my taste. I want my QB staying in the pocket.
Yes, maybe he should stand in one spot and get blasted! That sounds like a recipe for success! I don't think he runs too much. He's fine. He ran about four or five times last night and two of them were quarterback draws.
I thought he looked pretty good. More than the pick, the thing that bothered me a little was on a couple of big plays instead of standing tall in the pocket and taking a hit he started to turn and brace himself as he threw the ball anticipating getting hit and threw inaccurately. Not a huge deal, but they were on key plays where you'd like to see him stand in there a little better and make the set throw. I don't think it's impossible he falls to us and as of now that's what I'm hoping for. Ideally Mallett and Locker have strong bowl games and some teams fall in love with them allowing us a shot at Gabbert.
I watched the game last night and was very impressed with Gabbert. I thought his arm and accuracy were excellent. I loved how quick his release and his decision making was. I didn't like how low he would hold the ball when he would scramble to either side. And I don't feel he has great instincts for how to move in the pocket. Overall I like him, but I expect he'll need a year or two to learn to read defenses while dropping back from center. I think he would be a colossal failure if he gets tossed into the system that we've run this season. But in a system more suited to him, I think he could be very good.
I like what I saw in this young man last night BUT I have to throw the bull S!!T flag on that. The receiver was open Gabbert just didn't lead him enough allowing the CB to get a hand on the ball. It was not a horrible throw or decision... it was just poor placement on his part. That ball is 2 feet towards the middle of the field it is an easy TD. Having said that, the guy played a heck of a game and IMO worked his way into the top 10 (probably top 5) of the draft. No way we have a shot at him.
IMO, he did not do a good job of keeping focused down field the few times he got pressured but I would imagine that is the case with most young QB's.
IMO he's rather unathletic when he moves around. He's fast when he's running in a straight line, but that's it. I think it affects him when he tries to move in the pocket or rolls to either side. The movement doesn't come naturally to him so he tends to drop his arm and his focus. I also think it will make it take longer for him to adjust to dropping back from center and I expect he would struggle mightily dropping back and then making a play action fake. He does, however, seem to have a fast decision making process so that will help in the PA fake scenario.
I am a Gabbert fan. Stanzi is pretty good too. I like his size, the system he plays in, good accuracy, he can sling it down the field, and he only threw 4 interceptions against 25 touchdowns this season. Then he goes and throws 2 picks in his bowl game. And he was lucky it wasn't 3 picks. Now I'm not so sure about him. I still like him and consider him a strong option in the 4th round but I am not as high on him as I was. Hope he plays in the Senior Bowl. Chandler Harnish from Northern Illinois had himself a real good bowl game. I hope he declares but I have no idea what his intentions are.
Chris and I were talking about this last night; that first half against Iowa, Gabbert put on a clinic. An absolute clinic, the like of which I've rarely seen. He made three throws that made me go wow. What I like about him is that from the middle of last season to the Navy game in the Bowl Game to the season opener this season to Oklahoma midseason to Iowa 2 nights ago, he's made specific improvement. Throws come out on time, in stride time after time. He can get a little low in his delivery occasionally when he's really zinging the ball, but man he's good. I liked him last year but don't think I expected to see this improvement this quickly. If Andrew Luck doesn't come out, then he could go 1st overall. Miami has NO shot at him.
And I of course fully agree with this. I keep thinking about Gabbert within the context of Matt Stafford who came out and went #1 overall. As far as top QBs and #1 overalls go, to me Stafford was good but was not of the caliber that I knew (even at that time) that Sam Bradford would be. I knew nothing of Andrew Luck of course when Stafford came out, Luck hadn't even played yet, but I rate Luck the same place I rated Bradford, which is to say a different class of top QB than Stafford. To me, Blaine Gabbert is as good as, maybe a little better prospect than Matt Stafford. And that is why I have been thinking Gabbert could go top 5, will definitely go top 10, and Simon is right, if Andrew Luck does not come out he could be the #1 overall.
And at the end of the day, I'm not sure how many QB's will go in round 1. If Luck come sout, then I imagine he is a lock to carolina. But I'm not convinced that Buffallo, Arizona, SF and Minny will be looking at QB. Particularly for the NFC West teams and Minny, a solid veteran could get them back into contention pretty quickly.
I think Cam Newton stands a good chance of going in the top ten, leaving Mallett who i've got my doubts about
I have very strong issues with Ryan Mallett's game, but he's not a guy that I would classify as "Don't take, whatever you do." That honor is reserved for Jake Locker. There is upside to him. I rate him higher than I did Jimmy Clausen.
Havent watched a great deal of games as I have the past few years, but i would say Claussen looks to be much more accurate than is Mallett. The little I have watched I have seen some very good things and sonme very puzzling things, sorta like I do with Chad Henne.
* Don't shoot the messenger* warning...warning... You like Mel much more than I do , but he was saying yesterday that he thought Gabbert was a 2nd round , maybe 1st round choice this year. If he went back for another year he stated he felt he could possibly be in contention for #1 overall. If all/most of the QB's come out , Miami will be in a position to get one at 15 or move up a bit if they have a real conviction , imo.
Don't get me wrong. If you follow this link you know exactly what I think of Ryan Mallett. But the bottom line is I don't go from being down on certain aspects of his game, to saying we need to not ever take this guy.
Agreed but I also see him dropping into the mid-late 2nd round....ofcourse the process has barely begun.
Boom , you know as well as I do or more so how Mel's list fluctuates To me , honestly , he is a lot like the weatherpersons on tv , they don't need to be right a lot , or reserve the option to make their prediction until just before it happens. On a side note, last night Locker looked an awful lot like how maybe they thought Pat White would be .
