As the end of the year is approaching, several are wondering about the possible lockout next year. If there is a lockout in 2011 what impact will it have on the NFL, players, fans and in general, America? Also, if there is a lockout, who's to blame?
Pretty much this. It comes down to money. I can't fault the players for standing their ground, because they know how much the NFL is making bank right now and they are the ones that are getting beat up, knocked out, and for some, last effects after they walk away. As for the effects, I know I didn't go back to following MLB after their work stoppage, however I think people love the NFL to much and most people will be back. The people that won't come back as fans were most likely not fans to begin with. All I know is if there isn't football next year, things will be awfully boring on Sundays.
it goes on without a hitch. basically a lockout means teams will have two draft classes showing up in 2012
We have already hit the bad negativity period, and seem to be transitioning to a "this may get done" period. Even as of last month we heard a lot of both sides saying a deal was unlikely, however we are now hearing that the sides both want the deal done, that there is a good chance for a season etc. Schefter mentioned in his recent chat that while a full season may not be played, there will almost certainly be football in 2011. I think both sides realize they have a golden goose laying some really large golden eggs, and that a lockout will help neither side. Concessions from both the players and owners are needed.
I don’t see how the players—not the NFLPA, the players—would ever agree to an 18 game schedule. 16 games plus the playoffs tend to destroy their bodies as it is.
Well the ownners and the players hold all thecards so I guess as fans we can stop watching.I know that won't happen but I must admit as a fan I won't be shocked if they hold out again. This will the the third time this happened since I have been watching football. Wait for them to finish their tantrums and go back to make them more money when all is fogiven.
It's a stupid idea, but they can dump two preseason games, and the amount of "offseason" stuff will be cut severely as well. Add in a second bye and thats what the players will accept. The owner's won't budge on an 18 game schedule and they can outlast the players in any kind of strike or lockout.
The NFLPA is already on board. They don’t need any further convincing. The players, however, are generally opposed. They’ll be the biggest obstacle to an 18 game season. I don’t like the idea either, honestly. People care about football because there’s a limited schedule, games generally happen once a week, and every play counts. The NFL is starting to run the risk of turning the first six weeks of the season into the same irrelevant filler as the first four months of baseball and basketball.
Right.. and with the 18 game season, the players feel that they physically can't handle that - I don't blame them!
The players can whine all they want, but they ultimately need the paychecks more than the owners need the income. They live far more day to day than the owners and will be hit much harder by a lockout. They will get some concessions, such as a reduced offseason load and less preseason, but ultimately they are going to be forced to suck it up and play 18.
Hey now, I have a fairly decent job and it will take me 17 years to earn ONE MILLION dollars...that being said, I think the average NFL player can afford to take an entire year off and not suffer too much financially. Especially some of the knuckleheads on the Redskins. Just Sayin'
18 game schedule means we would still be in the Playoff hunt...come on who's with me.....lets go to the Playoff Generator! Woot!!!!!!!1
Last time around we had Dan Marino to come back to (which I did), this time it will be Chad Henne! Nope, I think I'll just be on my way, besides I'm getting to old for this poop anyhow!
I agree they are overpaid already, but a lot of these guys actually live paycheck to paycheck - they just spend that much. Once you get accustomed to that lifestyle, it's hard to go back. In any sort of lockout/strike, the owners hold the upper hand for that kind of reason. The players simply don't actually bank enough to get by for a year at their standards.
