Beat you to it, padre. Told you that Trestman was due diligence/decoy. Here’s Feldman’s newly-posted article.
Not the big fish I was holding out hope for, but it seems like the up and comer type hire I had next on my wishlist. Hopefully now he can go out and salvage our recruiting class.
Schemes are for coaches! Period, point blank. Almost every single Head Coach brings his people. His coaches, who can coach his schemes... And furthermore, Trestmans resume' is far from bad. I could care less about the Grey cup as well but if you're going to brush it off as absolutely nothing, its only because you don't want Trestman.
Coordinators bring schemes. Head coaches bring leadership. It’s not that I don’t necessarily want Trestman—I agree that he can coach. I just think he would be a last ditch option, and would prefer Mike Leach over him. He’s not the guy for this job. I think a Trestman hire would basically be an admission that Hocutt’s stated goals in filling this vacancy would have gone unfulfilled. A failure of the searching process, if you will. I think you might need to re-read my posts, like 2604. My opinion of the Trestman association has always been that talking to him is simple due diligence. I think it’s noteworthy that there are reports we’ve made actual offers to Golden and Petersen, but not Trestman.
Oh, and I’d like to add that if the Al Golden stuff is true—and it appears that it is—then I think this is a very good foundational hire. It’s not the big name that Hocutt may have wanted, but he very much feels like he could be another Jimmy Johnson, but for a longer period of time. ESPN is already pissing on the picnic, but what’s new about that?
It’s done. Al Golden is the new head coach of your Miami football Hurricanes. From 560 WQAM’s Twitter account.
You go ahead and show me how many head coaches bring just their leadership. I'll wait. The only scheme to be brought in by others is whatever the new HC does not specialize in. It's either O or D. I know what your opinion on Trestman has been. But according to the article you posted, you were incorrect.
Golden will begin recruiting tomorrow. Staff makeup is currently up in the air; probably a brand-new staff with a couple of Temple guys making the trip with Golden. I already gave Mike Tomlin as an example. I could point out Tony Sparano if you’d like; Sparano was never a traditional offensive coordinator and thus didn’t have a scheme to bring with him. Dan Henning controls the offense with visionary input from Sparano. And this usually results in failure. Where was Brad Childress’ kick-*** offensive scheme? Where was Brian Billick’s offense in Baltimore? Where’s Marvin Lewis’ defense in Cincy? (He had to import Mike Zimmer to build an average defense in the last 2 years.) Cam Cameron tried to be HC and OC at the same time and the offense was pathetic. Nick Saban’s defense was pretty good, but the strength of that defense was the front seven, not the secondary, which he coached before becoming Belichick’s DC, and which he paid major attention to during training camps and practices. And according to Kirby Hocutt, I am right.
Not correct. They strongly considered the man. He was not just someone to interview to make trustees happy. The man can coach. I'm glad your happy though. I like the hire as well but sure the heck would have liked Trestman, or Patterson. As for the scheme thingy. Tell Shula, Beliecheat, Jimmy Johnson, Chuck Knol, Tony Dungy, Rex Ryan, Dennis Erickson, and a list of about a thousand others that bringing in your own scheme usually ends up in failure.
No, it wasn’t just a “let’s appease the trustees” interview. Due diligence doesn’t equate to going through the motions, it means conducting legitimate inquiries with an open mind. But they never offered Trestman the job. Not what I’m arguing. I’m saying that the head coach’s schematic background has zero bearing on whether or not that unit or group will be successful. Being a good positional coach or coordinator does not mean that, after becoming a head coach, it is guaranteed or even likely that the head coach will get that particular unit to perform up to whatever level he had them playing when he was a position coach or coordinator. The head coach is too high up on the food chain to exercise that sort of hands-on control. That’s why you have positional coaches in the first place: if the head coach could do it himself, he wouldn’t need to spend six or seven figures having someone else do it for him. So when a head coach candidate is highly touted because his unit performs really well, that doesn’t necessarily mean that success will be replicated when he becomes a head coach. Cam Cameron is one of the best offensive coordinators in the NFL, but he couldn’t handle being a head coach because there’s more to that job than being really good at scheming and playcalling. In fact, being the head coach has little to do with scheming or playcalling.
I like it! I thought Golden would hold out for the Penn State job, but it looks like Paterno is never going to retire. Any guesses on Coordinators? Josh Mcdaniel?
They offered the job to only one coach so they say but I'm sure they would have had an offer in place for either Patterson or Trestman if the one they liked the most said no thanks. As for the other. It is what you're arguing. You just went ahead and listed Cam Camoron as to why it might not work. I say schemes come with all new Head Coaches. He is only going to run what he likes, or is convinced of. Being a Head Coach is about absolutely every single aspect of the team. From scheme right on down to his leadership. So I'm not saying you dead wrong but that your being a little close minded about it ...
Anyway. Pitt offered their vacant head coaching job to Al Golden. Golden chose The U over Pitt. So not only do we know that The U is considered a better job than Pitt, but we can laugh at Wannstache again. I think Josh McDaniels will catch on to an NFL team as an OC, but he’d be lethally effective in college. That would be a great hire. Not sure Shalala would want to get involved with the Spygate stuff, though.
Hocutt quotes on Golden. All from WQAM’s Twitter account: I liked this hire when it was announced. I’m slowly growing to love it.
Found this on youtube. There are a few more on there if you want to go and look. Just a little insight into what he's like. It's obviously just a small piece, but I like what I see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE3oAmD0TzI&feature=related
Thanks for the tweets Des as i dont follow twitter. I am very excited about this, now on to getting some 5 stars who will no doubt be called 3 star recruits....

Marc Trestman claims he withdrew his name from the coaching search and never interviewed for the job. Who does he think he’s kidding?
If he wants to play football, yeah, he’ll have to pull a Marve. Tom Lemming quotes from Manny Navarro: Also from Navarro, Will Muschamp is going hard after UM commit DE Anthony Chickillo, who says he doesn’t want to play in a 3-4 and worries Al Golden will bring that to UM. Golden will meet with decommits CB Albert Louis-Jean, QB Teddy Bridgewater, and OL Marcus Jackson.
Dave George: Al Golden hire shows how fall Canes have fallen I bolded the middle part because he basically gave away the entire reason he’s angry: he wanted Mike Leach because Leach would be easy to write about. Al Golden requires actual work and prevents him from making pirate jokes.
It seems that you're fooling yourself over Trestman. He did not have an out clause in his contract and do you think that the U could afford to pay him enough to cover both his contract, and a buy out?
This is a guy with Head Coaching experience. I was warmed up to Gary Patterson and love Trestmans offenses but at least this is a tireless worker and an excellent recruiter. Now get us a Qb and some lineman...
The Canes wanted to talk to Trestman. That's fact. Trestman did not have an out clause. Now do you think Hocutt knew this before the meeting and if he did do you think he had the go ahead to offer enough money so Trestman could earn his salary AND buy out his contract? Don't think so, and that's probably the exact momment Hocutt went to his next meeting, and Trestman said he removed his name from consideration.
You assume that Trestman was a serious, legitimate candidate and both Hocutt and Trestman were interested in reaching a deal for Trestman to coach at UM. My view is that Hocutt simply did his due diligence by interviewing Trestman without intention of hiring him, and that Trestman actually wanted the job and is now covering his *** with his current employer because Hocutt opted for Golden. It’s not that I don’t understand what you’re saying, it’s that I disagree with you.
Most people are, it seems. Very solid get. Also, looks like Golden might bring Temple’s DC, Mark D’Onofrio, along for the ride if D’Onofrio isn’t made the new head coach at Temple.
