I'd pay to see the security camera footage of you waiting in line behind her. I'm actually surprised you didn't step in for the rep and answer her questions for her.

Best Buy should pay me when I go to their store and answer people's questions while I'm shopping for stuff.

The damage modeling better be good or else the whole "Best racing sim" bull**** goes out the window...again.

Can't be a good sim if you can slam into an wall at 180 mph, bounce off, and continue racing.

You’re probably going to be disappointed. Companies just don’t want to see their cars broken and banged up in something as high profile as Gran Turismo.

I was trying not to be visually agitated while I was waiting. I wanted to answer her questions, but I felt like it would only lengthen the process.

I've not crashed yet, but I'm sure the damage modeling won't be good enough. If it is as I have read, I hope that they can patch it to make the damage more aggressive.

I hope they can patch load times and more aggressive damage. Probably in that order lol.

Edit: I guess what I take as loading times, may be at times the game polling the server (which apparently is busy as **** today; not surprising).

From what I read there isn't any damage on any cars but the "premium cars." Same thing goes for the driver view, photo mode, and supposedly overall the non-premium cars looks less attractive than the premium cars. Of course this information was from around the web before the release so I am in no way saying it's true, maybe those that own the game can confirm? However it was enough to get me to cancel my pre-order and from what I saw from the IGN review I'm sort of glad I did. Looks like a really good game but fell short of what it could have been. In terms of a true sim-racer I doubt you could ever hope for more, so for people that love that sort of thing I'm sure they'll love it.

I took that, then I realized you can set all sorts of aspect ratios with the camera (and even take 3D photos).

Edit: guess the aspect ratio doesn't show up well in linked images.

Got it..been playing for two days (was out of town for T-Day) a few earlier impressions...

-30-40% of this game is jaw dropping. The rest is just really good. Some of the tracks are a big boring to look at, and there are noticeable differences in the visuals for the standard cars. It's not bad, but as a 3D modeler it's not incredibly polished (I can see some textures acting as headlights, etc.) and I was expecting more. That said tearing up the Nurburgring in my GTR at night is one of the most beautiful gaming experiences I've had.

-I LOVE the used car part. I haven't bought a single new car to this point. There are SOOO many cars in this game, but most of them seem to appear in the used car section. It's awesome. I got an RX-7 with 25 extra HP (can't remember the model off the top of my head right now), saw a Spoon Civic that I wanted BADLY, etc. These cars aren't available from the regular dealers so keep your eyes open. It's a blast finding "rare" cars in here.

-I'm still confused on the damage..but mostly frustrated. From what I read damage affects how you race..which makes sense. I'm not at a high level yet, so I'm not seeing heavy damage at this point. But I AM seeing crazy expensive repairs for my cars. I have one car that I won, and promptly wrecked (AI is a hole other issue) to the tune of $340,000 in body damage. There better be some REALLY lucrative races coming up, because that's insane. Given it's a classic, but I didn't hit THAT hard.

-Admittedly I've never been a very good race sim player. I like to bang around. But I've been putting in a very strong effort to play this as a sim...but the AI makes it REALLY hard. 70% of my crashes come from stupid AI moves. They break, and swerve into your line without any indication of what they're going to do, and will rear-end you with no notice. I understand it's not supposed to be easy, but I end up often going off road through corners at this point to avoid the AI cluster that's going to inevitably occur. It's frustrating to get 40k in repairs when you got cut off and rear ended at the beginning of the race.

Overall I'm loving this game. It is massive, and I still have a ton to uncover. I look forward to figuring the damage out more. At this point its not very visible and I don't think it's affecting my performance. It would be a bummer if this stayed true.

    Edit:

Looks like damage does get better...at level 40. Here's a video

Level 40? smh... I'm almost at level 15. I've done all the licensing challenges. Seems like the Special Events get you paid the most. It's hard to level up just doing single races as most of the cars I don't have... probably shouldn't have spent the $250k on the Lambo...

Yeah you have to pick your cars carefully. I've noticed before starting the game that the challenges have different car requirements. But I enjoy that part of the game greatly. The game forces you to buy different japanese, european and american cars from vintage to modern and it's fun trying to get used to how each car drives and their own tendencies. They educate you about each different car as well which I like. I'm starting to get into it and having a lot of fun. I think i'm only at level 12 though.

How hard is this game to play? The last GT I played was on playstation 1 and I really enjoyed doing the challenges and unlocking and upgrading the cars etc. However I never get racing games because I suck at them. Also I downloaded the GT5 demo and found it quite difficult to race. Is the game like the demo, or is it easier?

I think it's easy to race (or easy enough) so long as you follow the basics. It also helps immensely if you have a wheel like a logitech driving force GT.

Yeah i need to get a wheel next, any suggestions on where and how much? Having a ***** of a time trying to pass the special event intermediate at top gear with the lotus. Flat track if u bump another car ur DQ and if u go on the grass or hit some cones. Tough track car combo. Think a wheel would help. So would being able to lightly press the brakes. Perhaps switching to a manual stick shift would help with braking.

I was in fifth going into the last turn and went on the grass. Cant pass that one, fifth or better.

    I'd say amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Play...YPOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291241322&sr=8-1

It was on sale for $99.99 the other day.

I think I picked it up at GameStop for that price like a year or so ago (they may have it for that price now).

    It's meh. Simulation is simulation.

I play GTA4 because, I know if I lose the race I can always drag the winner out of his car and beat him down at the end of the race.

How is the night and rain? Those are areas that F3 can't compete because it doesn't have it.

I'll probably pick GT5 up this weekend. How big is the patch?

Oh I see. You don't think they are on the same level. 4M+ copies sold, special tie in with Audi, the fact that the manufacturers went to Turn10 to get their cars into the game. OK. Sure...

I like them both but don't give me that.

Gran Turismo has actually embedded itself into international car culture. Forza Motorsport is simply a good video game that happens to be about driving. One is not like the other.

    How stupid do I feel?

I "beat the game" meaning that I beat that one race in expert. Since then I've continued to build up my car catalogue (my favorite part). I started thinking back to old GT haven't played since 3) and I was thinking that they used to have stuff to affect the weight of your car. hadn't seen that yet. today I was trying to find snow tires, and I just happened to find the bloody tuning shop! I'm sorry, but GT Auto that sells spoilers, etc. should sell you the items.

Anyway, long story short I just found out I can soup up my rides a lot more...damn I felt stupid! Game just turned the corner from good to effing sweet.

Not really. The loading times are par for the course I think. You may be hearing that from people who didn't do the full install (if you don't do a full install, it installs the game as you go..that would probably take a long time).

I think they're fine. The only time I get irritated is when I load up a race/test, and botch it right away requiring me to reload. But that's my fault, not the game's. :)

Got this for xmas...been playing it since. It's alot of fun, but the damage modeling is a joke. Why bother adding it if it doesn't effect performance? I wanted to test it so I reversed course on the high speed loop and hit another car head on at about 175 mph. My REAR quarter panel folded up in what looked like a bad photoshop. I bounced off, and was able to continue racing with no handicaps to my car's performance.

"Most realistic driving simulator" my ***.

I do drive realistically. It's well known I have a high performance vehicle and kinda know what I'm doing behind the wheel. :D

But you can't claim to be the most realistic driving simulator when you leave out important aspects. :wink2:

Don't remember what level I am, haven't played since I posted that (Damn Fable III)...but that's pretty dumb anyway bro. Does your car not get any damage when you only have a learner's permit? :wink2:

I'm not saying the game isn't a great game. I just hate that they tout themselves as the most realistic simulation, when - and this is the key part - personally I think FMS is better.

Well that's another thing I don't like about it. Do we really need 12 variations of the Viper? Believe me I love playing the game, but I think the resources would have been better spent ironing out all the warts instead of packing in every single version of the Skyline. No one is going to drive every car in the game.

    But that's just my opinion.
