Alright, I need a car. Something that is reliable. I got about $2,000 to spend. When I find a decent job ill get something a little nicer. Just need something to bridge the fab for now. Anyone have any ideas? Or anyone selling one in Florida somewhere?

I don't know what is really available for $2,000, because your only options are probably really old used cars. I suggest a motorcycle, they are much cheaper and much more gas efficient.

if it's just for a year or two, how about leasing a used car?

With only 2 grand to spend bro, no one's going to be able to give you any help on here. Like finsincebirth said, you're basically limited to really old used cars, and that's a crapshoot.

Try looking at old school Jeep Cherokees. They're dirt cheap on the used market, and the 4.0 straight six that they used in them is fairly bullet proof. Also, used Ford Explorers are really cheap, try looking at them.

You should probably be looking for that before getting a car. Blowing 2G's on a hoopty makes zero sense when you can just lease or buy something decent when you get a job. Use public transportation til you get some steady income because all a car you get for 2G's is going to have is problems which will cost you more money to fix then the car is even worth.

I am looking for a job. Have been for a while now. After my car got stolen I was borrowing a car that I now have to give it back. So I won't have a car to use to get a job unless I get one.

my buddy used to go through the auto trader and find any car listed at around $1,000 and offer them $400. he would get a lot of cars that way and end up selling them for $800-$1,500 after driving them around a bit.

Public transportation? Ive been in that position. Get a new job lined up then get a car that you will not just burn 2G's on. The 2000 can be better used. Public transportation sucks and its a huge inconvenience but it would be cheaper for you until you have steady work. Doing it that way leasing or financing will be easier and you already have the down payment set aside. Just my opinion as I dont know every detail of your situation.

Your in NY correct? Florida public transportation is joke, so much so every interview I've been asks if you have reliable transportation...

I would look for an old Civic or Corolla. It would have to be from the 90's though. I'm selling my 2003 Accord now, and it's still worth almost 11 grand. Some places specialize in cars between 2 and 4 grand. In South FL, they're usually the old school gas stations converted into sales lots. Good luck!

For the money you have to spend and if you want it to last for awhile you'll need to go Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Nissan. No Mazda or Subaru). Quality of American cars has only come up in the last few years. Find a Camary, Accord, Corrolla or Civic with about 110k on the clock and hopefully some maintenance records and you'll be good to go for 200k without having to dump a load in to get it going.

No matter what you buy at that $ expect that you will be putting coin into it for some maintenance. The internet is your friend for looking up issues on models and if it looks to good to be true it usually is.

Very true. I had Tacoma truck and totaled it with 2 more payment to be made. With the insurance money I got back around 10k I had to decide either to buy another car or get out debt. I decide to get out of debt and had no car for about 6 mo. I had to deal with buses and metro train to work. But in the end financially i was better for it and was able to save up money for a new ride and move out on my own. But everyone have different priorities. Trust me Los Angeles public trans. is the worst in the entire country.
