What is this move all about ? It reeks of a head coach that is trying to save his job. Its not about vision or the future, but purely selfish by the Head Coach. So much for the FO preaching team, and what's best for the franchise. This is all about Tony Sparano, and his keeping his job, make no other assumption than that.
Disagree. This is all about getting to 9 wins, and then Ross looks stupid if he fires Sparano. If you want to win in the playoffs, well we don't have the offense to do that. This is purely a selfish move, by a desperate head coach that is scared he will lose his job without Daddy Parcells to back him up.
No, it's about 52 players that come into work. They look at the leader and ask "What are we doing wrong?" His response is "We can win more if the play of the quarterback improves marginally." What is abmirable is that he did not say it to you, me, or the media. He just made the move. 52 guys that come to work everyday appreciate that fact.
well then the fault lies with the owner. If the owner is demanding victories or else everyone is fired, you have to put Pennington in. Still comes down to winning now
No,Sir. It's about having the balls to say your QB just ain't cutting it.That it's time to make a change. Now if you want to talk about the O-line shuffle.......
There are lots of other reasons for why Sparano would've made the choice, but I think Zod said it the best.
The future is crumbling and people are embracing this move backwards. Seems idiotic as hell to me. Where does Pennington take you? To the playoffs No way in hell. This is going to be a disaster.
Of course he wants to save his job. I honestly believe that he feels pennington gives us the best chance to go to the playoffs. We'll see. I have a feeling this move could either be genius or awful. Lets hope its not awful.
Henne was never the future of this football team or any football team. Perfect , no super perfect, of Marc Bulger part Deux.
Or you could say that Penny lost his job due to injury & that Henne never beat him out. And, that the players in the locker room have more respect for, and confidence in, the guy who led them to the playoffs in 2008. Add in that in start 21 Henne has yet to earn the right to audible, which is strange to say the least. Perhaps the coaches don't fully trust Henne and feel like he needs more time. Time, I think, is in short supply as we sit at 4-4 and in 9th place in the conference. And since it's pretty clear that Henne isn't going to suddenly turn into a beast this week, I hardly think it's idiotic to subjugate Henne's development to the team goal of winning. Not saying I agree with the move, but there's a credible case to me made for it & I think we should see how the team responds before we start in with the torches and nooses.
When was Marc Bulger ' great " please enlighten me of that. Best year he had was 2006 and the team was 8-8, that is great ?
Or maybe Sparano will not fire Henning and he feels that Penny's play is better suited to the jackass' gameplan and play calling. Conservative, play-not-to-lose, short game, dink n dunk, etc...
Duly noted . I don't like the move either, but I'm going to give it a chance. Penne allows us to go deeper into the playbook. We can use audibles, send more then 3 guys on a pass route, and Penny will throw the lobs to Marshall that Henne refused to throw. Most importantly, Penne is arguably the most respected guy on the team. If he can't give us a spark, no one can. I would love to have seen Henne play well thru the season, but I can't say he played well enough to make himself untouchable. It sucks too b/c Henn's being scapegoated when there are others not playing up to snuff. Difference is, those guys don't have Pro Bowl veterans sitting on the bench behind them.
Meh I'm not going to get out all kinds of stats or anything like that, but I do recall him earning that fat contract he got. He just didnt live up to it afterwards.
I agree. But it's a lot easier for a coach to change QB's mid-season than OCs. Henning's conservative play calling and refusal to let Henne audible suggests a lack of confidence that was absent whenever Penny was under center. Even if Sparano thinks Henning is the problem, it still makes sense to put Penny in for the quick fix and deal with the larger issues in the off season. Personally, I don't think QB play was our (biggest) problem, but if you're gonna go down, go down with no rounds left in the chamber and it seems like that's what Sparano is doing.
It's about winning NOW. It's always about winning right now No competitor wants any part of sacrificing wins now for wins in the future. Even more so in a league where the average career is roughly 5 years. I've even read or heard over the years fans who are okay with losing now if it means (potentially) winning in the future. However the people actually involved, ie: players, coaches, etc, all want to win now, because for them there may not be a "later". As for Sparano thinking in terms of saving his job, that sort of falls under the "No S**t category". Of course he realizes that he's in a results oriented career. They all are. IMO it's sort of important to remember that we as fans have a different perspective than they do. But at the end of the day we all want to see the team win.
I recall Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt being on that team. Those three made a lot of guys look good. Heck, Mike Martz is still in the league SOLELY because of them.
I don't LIKE the move. But I know what it means. It means that this coach isn't going to tolerate mediocrity. 4-4 is the very definition of mediocrity. ...........and if we go into next year with Henne as the starter, I can see myself supporting that move too. This isn't the end of his career. It's the end of his on the job training. He doesn't need anymore on the job training anyway. He needs to learn how a PRO can single handedly win a game.
You're wrong. Mark Bulger was a damn good quarterback from 2002-2006 before injuries got to him. http://www.nfl.com/players/marcbulger/careerstats?id=BUL162264 If Chad Henne turns out to be Mark Bulger part 2, we are in pretty damn good shape.
So he should want to be fired? If it's about being fired, it's the owners fault for giving his employee that impression.
Part of building a franchise QB is letting him take his bumps in the road like a man. Let him come out the following week and bounce back. This doesn't help Henne's production whatsoever. It will NOT get him better being benched midway though the season.
I don't think its coming from Ross. I think this is purely a self-preservation move by Sparano. Getting to 9 wins will make it impossible (because of public perception) to fire Sparano. How could he explain that to the public, he fired a guy who had 2 winning seasons in 3 ? I wish people would just open their eyes and not have blind loyalty to the HC.
Tony is a lying sack of crap. Just a couple weeks ago he totally denied this was on his mind. Can't believe a word he says.
Now, if you believe that & Sparano as well, then why wasn't Pennington starting from the 1st game of the season. You logic is flawed. Pennington is not the man to take the team to the promised land, but is merely being inserted because it may be the best (and safest) way to get to at least 9 wins. Sparano is conservative, and he knows what Pennington will give him.
1 TD and 5 INT is not good on any level. Not saying it was his fault. Just the facts. He'll be back before the season is over.
