I already have a Wii, but would like a more serious gaming system but I cannot decide which one. The conflicting opinions that a google search produces are practically useless.

As a wannabe gamer, I'm most interested in sports games and the occasional war game (halo, call of duty, medal of honor). I'm not much of an online gamer, but like to get my butt kicked every now and then. And no, I don't already own a Blu-Ray player, but it doesn't much matter as I generally watch streaming movies off Netflix anyway.

So I'm leaning toward XBox since it is cheaper. Any opinions?

Both systems have the games you like, but Xbox Live is generally considered a better online service. The downfall: you have to pay to get the good stuff. PSN has come a long way over the last couple of years, and it’s free. (Playstation Plus doesn’t offer a whole lot, IMO.)

    Both systems offer Netflix streaming.

Cheaper? Huh? Both start at $300 with bundle offers driving the price higher.

I’d say you need to look at the system-exclusive games and decide which series you like more. Do you want Halo, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War? Or do you want Killzone, God of War, and Gran Turismo 5 (it’s coming… eventually)?

Alternatively, if you have no preference as to the system exclusive games, then your choice should come down to how often you’ll play online. If you’re going to go online a couple hours a night, then Xbox Live is probably the better service for you, and thus a 360 is the better bet. Worth nothing that the 360 is more likely to get exclusive DLC for games. For example, GTA4 DLC was 360 exclusive for a long time, and Fallout New Vegas is getting 360 exclusive DLC.

For what it’s worth, I’d lean towards the PS3-exclusive games. Ninja Gaiden III, Demon’s Souls, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Yakuza, Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy Versus XII, etc. That’s just personal taste, though.

If I didn't play online, and could only pick one, I'd probably go with PS3 (especially since Mass Effect 2 is coming to it).

The best sports game (arguably) and certainly the best baseball game out there is MLB the Show, and it's only on PS3. The best football, hockey, soccer, and basketball games are available on both.

wow, I didn't know MLB the show was a PS3 exclusive, that may be a game changer for me. online experience is important to me, but not that important. if PSN is free, I might just lean that way

    Live from the Internet.
Xbox is bigger as a community. As a manager in GameStop, we sell more (by far) 360s than ps3s. I don't have the numbers, but I think it's s safe bet that there are more 360s out there than ps3s (continental US) also, illegal game downloading is done on 360s. We even have few of our own resident pirates. I'm a PC player myself, but if I had to go with a system, I'd go with the 360.

The price points are about the same now. If you use a wireless router for internet keep in mind that the PS3 has built in wireless capability but with the Xbox you have to pay an extra 100 bucks for a wireless adapter. A big time hidden charge. Other than that they're about even. It's just a matter of which exclusives you want. For me I have both but if I had to choose I'd pick PS3 b/c of the Show. PS3 online isn't bad but for me for some reason PSN still doesn't stay connected nearly as well as Xbox live does.

That's good. Good to see Microsoft doing the right thing. It was ridiculous that Wii and PS3 had built in and they were charging an arm and a leg for that capability. Unfortunatly I wanted a 360 a year and a half ago so I took the hit.

This is because there are no centralized hosted servers for PS3 games. You’re connecting to other PS3s who are hosting games.

That’s Microsoft’s one advantage in the online arena: they host their own servers.

i went with the PS3 because:
    built in wireless internet
    built in bluray player
    free PSN
any bluetooth headset can be used as a mic
    removeable/upgradable hard drive

some of you guys seem to like that MLB game alot, imagine if next one uses the playstation move controller, like the wii.

For batting it could be sweet.

Sports Champions is a great game, and what the Move can do is pretty amazing IMO. It could absolutely replicate a batter in a batter's box.

ive read that the ps3 move is more accurate then the wii.

and in my opinion the PS3 has always been the winner of this argument. the only thing the xbox ever had going for it was being released a year sooner, so it had a larger base and more games available. then there were the people who thought HD DVD was going to win. but both of those arguments faded with time.

Well initially the Xbox game selection was significantly better. The price was a bit lower too. It was just more accessible. The cheapest PS3 in late 2007 was still around 400 bucks I think. Game developers weren't always doing a great job porting some games to PS3 either. Now most of them are pretty comfortable making games for PS3 I think. Except for that guy at Valve [I think, the Left 4 Dead makers] who always trashes the console like he works for Microsoft.

That’s Gabe Newell. He runs Valve. And Valve has reversed its stance on the PS3 because of Microsoft requiring them to charge money for Team Fortress 2 updates they give out for free on PC. Portal 2 is coming to the PS3 and will have Steamworks support and will get the same post-release content at the same time as the PC/Mac version.

And Newell actually did work for Microsoft. All of Valve’s founders did. They left Microsoft to make games. Hell, they used to play poker once a week with Bill Gates.

PS Move does 1:1 motion tracking. The Wiimote (sans Wii MotionPlus) does not, and people only thought it did because Nintendo led them to believe that without actually saying so. IMO, the Wii is the most disappointing Nintendo product since the 64DD, but it prints money anyway.

I went through this a year ago...my brother has an XBOX, PS3, Wii, and PC....I weighed the following options....

    1. Price: Push at that point. The XBOX had a REALLY cheap version but the HD was useless. Plus the PS3 came free with my TV...

Winner: PS3 (It came fricking free!)

    2. Hardware: PS3 wins this one hands down. The Hardware is made incredibly well.....XBOX have an expiration clock in them it seems. My brother has gone through 2. The PS3 runs WAY quieter, doesn't RROD, has a large HD, and Wireless internet built in.

    Winner: PS3

    3. Games: XBOX at the time had the bigger library. Even now the Ports from XBOX to PS3 usually result in a better version for the XBOX (go figure). PS3 has really caught up but I still miss Halo and GOW. That said I'll be rocking Gran Tourismo soon (allegedly). What REALLY pisses me off is that developers are porting XBOX titles to PS3 rather than the other way around...the result is that it is RARE to get a game that was designed and runs in full 1080p. You can only rely on PS3 exclusive titles for that.

    Winner: XBOX

    4. Movies: I use my PS3 for movies A LOT. The PS3 JUST got disc-less netflix (thank god) that runs in full 1080p with full 5.1 surround sound...XBOX does not.....Also it has the obvious blueray player. One less identified aspect of movie watching on the PS3 over the XBOX is the sound...the XBOX runs REALLY loud...like take you out of the movie and irritate you loud. PS3 runs MUCH quieter

    Winner: PS3

    5. Online gaming: PSN vs. XBOX live. There really isn't just anything like XBL to be honest. I like the PS store and these options were lessi mportant to me than others as I don't play very often. I've found the PS3 online to work better than most people (IMO) give it credit for...it runs fast on my connection, it doesn't search endlessly, and it rarely drops....no more than the XBOX anyway...and it's free...but XBL is by far the tighter system. It has a slew of stuff that I never use.....but the online match making is great, and the friends and messages are a bit easier to get to.

    Winner: XBOX

I think the biggest factors against the PS3 were price, game selection (which came with price) and online play. 2 of the 3 have been solved, and like I say I believe the 3rd is neglible to most people who aren't crazy into online play. I love my PS3 and have absolutely no regrets about having purchased it.....er....got it free with my HD TV.

If you're in the market I'd wait until around christmas time. Last year sony had CRAZY deals. I'm sure they'll do the same this year.

    Good luck!

TBH you can't really go wrong with either at this point man. Coming from someone who has both, I would just look at your priorities and weigh it that way.

Can't live without Halo? You want the XBox. Need MLB the Show? PS3. Figure out your must have games vs. "eh, I can pass" ones. Personally, I would toss controller in there as well, 360 has a much better one imo, it just fits the hand.

Movies. You hopping on the Blu Ray train? PS3 then. If not, XBox is fine.

Online. You want the bigger more active community and don't mind paying for it? XBox. Not quite such a big online guy or you prefer it free? PS3. Also, find out what your friends have. If they all have 360s and you get a PS3 then that's no good.

Hardware seems to have evened out with the newer XBox models so that's not quite so big these days. Sony has the edge still, but they do have some issues. I don't know if Microsoft still offers the 2 year RROD free replacement/repair guarantee or not.

Really, unless there is just something you HAVE to have, or your friends are largely camped out on one vs. the other, you can't go wrong at this point. I have both, and enjoy them both. :)

    i'll chime in here.

Just really take a good look at what games you want to play and that should make your decision.

Ps3 - Infamous, little big planet, killzone 2-3, uncharted 1-2, modnation racers, god of war, Gran turismo (if it EVER comes out) MLB the show 10 (move???)

360 - gears of war 1-2, halo 3 odst reach, fable 2-3, mass effect 1-2(for now), forza 2-3, (kinect???)

Basically if one of those lists looks more appealing to you than the other, you have your decision. The only wildcard is blu ray movies, at which point your choice is obvious if thats what you want.

If you're looking to use your console as a means for multimedia then go PS3, but if you're going to go strictly gaming then go X-Box 360.

Really it depends on what you want to use it for... With the sounds of it, you won't be doing much online gaming... you may want to go PS3 for that reason.

Fable 2 and Halo 3 are not every exclusive.

And the update allows you to watch ESPN3 (formerly ESPN360) through Xbox Live, not just replays. You can watch live events on there too. This thread doesn't need a link about the Fall update either.

Haven't seen anybody mention controllers yet. PS3 controllers can be recharged by simply plugging them into the PS3. Xbox controllers eats through double a batteries like you wouldn't believe. I think they offer some kind of charging station, but it's not free.

Full Disclosure: I own all 3 systems. Wii and Xbox360 don't do too much besides collect dust. Except when I get the itch to use the virtual console for a blast to the past.

Also I refuse to buy new models of consoles unless it's next generation. The Xbox lost me as a customer when they released a newer model with things like HDMI that my old model didn't have. Except for a few minor things the PS3 has stayed relatively the same.

Lately I've played a lot more PS3. I think it's mostly because a lot of the cross platform games are smaller downloads on the PS3. What MosntBlitz says about the 360 controller is right... But on that note I do think that the 360 controller is much better than the PS3 controller. If you have massive hands like me especially. Not saying the PS3/2/1 controller is bad... Just saying it's time for an upgrade.

    My Wii collects dust too.

I use both systems quite a bit, but I use my slightly 360 more (just because I have more games for it, and that is because I like LIVE). I used to use my PS3 more before I had a dedicated blu-ray player.

Oh, if you have a universal remote (like a Logitech Harmony One for example) the PS3 only works with an $10 IR dongle (and even then it's a bit shotty) or a ~$50 PS3 add-on. I personally opted to just use the controller (but to some people it matters). If you don't have a universal remote, the Harmony One is awesome.

I can't say enough how much these help the PS3 controller. My hands are pretty big (maybe not as big as yours, I don't know) but these triggers really help with the R2 and L2 buttons.

PS3 controller D-pad kills the 360's by the way (except maybe on the new 360 controller with the twisty d-pad thing).

Only if you could already get it through your ISP, and I'm pretty sure you have to be a Gold member to use it.

I disagree about "the gameplay" being better.

And as most people cite, I'd expect Live to be light years better than PS Online (which it really isn't) considering you have to pay for it to really use it.

I don't know why you would ask 360/PS3 here. This board has had a clear PS3 bias for a good while now. Not to mention the same group of folk constantly pimping it here.

The right answer is to look at the features, google up the exclusives, and see what your friends own (as generally you'll want to play with them) and go from there.

I don't think the board is PS3 biased. I think most of us have all three consoles. If anything we're a little anti-Wii. I love my 360. LOVE. I was just saying that lately I've been playing more PS3. I wouldn't trade my 360 for the world.

If I have to choose either or I'd probably go 360.

Yea, no clue where the PS3 bias is coming from. I too own all 3 systems.

I love the 360 and play it more than my PS3. I don't think I could pick just one of the two to have though. Unless a gun were too my head, and then I'd probably take PS3, only because of 3D and Gran Turismo 5.
