I'd rather lament that one avenue of joke making is currently under construction, than to put a road block on the other avenue so as to make sure we're balanced, lifeless, and fvcked.

I would have loved if the reporter that was interviewing Crowder when he said that a white linebacker chased down Brantley shot back "Yeah, but at least he's got good credit."

oh come on dupree when it comes to racism there is a huge double standard - if the roles were reversed here jesse jackson, farrakhan would be demanding apoligies and asking for peoples jobs - you know it - i know it

I honestly do not care. That is still no excuse for white people to be racist.

CK is bringing up some good points. Are you offended because you are hurt by the joke or are you offended because you believe there are black people would be offended if it is the opposite situation and it is not fair?

i am not offended at all because it doesnt take a rocket scientest to figure out there was nothing meant by it - i dont think some black people would be offended i know there would be and here is why they would just look at the words and not the intentions or meaning by the statement

I'm offended that people are offended to be honest.

People need to just get over it. It's his opinion, who cares? I'm not specifically saying anything here, but why does everyone have to get all up in arms any time someone makes a comment like this. Everyone has their own stereotypes and preconceptions that they live with. And if you're saying you don't have any, you're a liar. You may not act on them in how you interact with people, but everyone has some sort of set beliefs based on their interactions with people of a specific group.

My point is, how do comments like this, directed at white, black, asian, etc have any impact on anyone in any way shape or form? They don't. So who cares? There's much more important things to be concerned with in this world. Racism won't ever be 100% eradicated. It will always be something that is there as a crutch to the ignorant and/or the poor. It's the same reason Hitler came to power in Germany. Because when you can blame all of your problems on someone else, it makes you feel better, even if the justification in some circumstances is absolutely ridiculous.

    i love stereotypes.

i'll laugh at a joke about black people cashing checks, eating watermelon & fried chicken.... so why can't i laugh about white athletes being slow, crappy dancers, etc? For the most part, they are.

if you're going to laugh at one stereotype you have to laugh at 'em all, i say.

So? There isn't exactly the same history there. Compare the crap that whites have done to blacks historically (slavery, segregation etc...) to having a little bit more freedom with ones humor. We (as in white people) have no one to blame for Blacks being more sensitive to that sort of stuff than ourselves. Oh well. Is it really that big of deal? They get to mock sterotypes publicly and we got to hold them in bondage for hundreds of years.

    Ah...

So the lesson to teach kids is that if someone does wrong to you, its totally OK to do wrong to them.

I hate what happened to the blacks during slavery! Hate it! But I don't see it like you do I guess. I was not there, nor were my parents. Anyone who was should be hung out to dry, or have been. Even their own tribal leaders who sold off there weak to begin with.

Two rights do not make a wrong though and I lived thru my own form of segragation. Being one of the first white males (10 whites alltogether) bused into all black schools when I was a kid. I got my *** whooped over and over until I started getting good at defending myself. Then I fit in just fine and if you notice my picture, I happen to date interacially. We have some interesting conversations, I'll tell you that. lol

I'm not at all offended by what Crowder said. I just throw it out there that I hope he would not be offended either..

But I do take it to task when a black man calls me white boy.

Nope. The lesson is that history can make one group of people justifiably more sensitive than another. There are Black people alive today that couldn't drink out of the same fountains that I could have. Think about that. That is why they are more sensitive about anything race related. Making a white LBs are slow joke isn’t doing something “wrong” to someone. It’s just a joke.

Making a Black people cannot play QB isn’t a joke to a lot of people. That was the sad truth for a long time.

I'm pretty sure slavery was abolished before I was born in 1979. I don't know anything about this 'we' thing. What happened in the past sucked but Channing Crowder didn't experience that either. He went to a great school and he has an awesome job now. I'm sure he earned it. The most important thing here is that he had the opportunity to earn it just like anyone else should. Our generations don't owe each other crap except to treat each other the way we want to be treated. That joke is fine as long as he can take a joke the other way. For instance if Michael Phelps gets embarrassed by a white swimmer getting beaten by a black guy I don't think Channing can say anything.

And just a thought, can a Jew get away with something similar? [I legitimately don't know the answer to this] They've had it much worse in the past and for much longer. They were enslaved when most Africans had not made contact with the rest of the world. They were blamed for the plague and people have attempted to wipe them from the earth numerous times.

Exactly, people act like we are talking about just slavery too. Wasn't that long ago, many of our parents were alive when blacks were still segregated.

    Joke or no joke.

Either its wrong or its not.

That black people had it really, really bad is a terrible Human tragedy. People today around the world are still having the same troubles that black have had in the past (and still do at times) in this country. It doesn't mean that you can justify it by going around and keep the cycle of HATE going.

Your either telling kids that if someone does something to you that is WRONG its OK that you can become sensative and can do something WRONG to them or you can't.

Two wrongs dont make a right, period.

I don't think I explained myself well enough. It's not that making a joke is wrong. I find no taboos in regards to humor privately.

It's some groups of people have the right to be more sensitive about public jokes than others. If you divorce history from it, then yeah, it’s not fair that black people seem to be able to tell jokes about white people that whites could not tell about blacks without drama. You cannot divorce the history though. That’s what truly wouldn’t be fair IMO.

When can you divorce the history? When all of the people involved in segregation are dead? There has to be some point I would think.

I see your point. I really do. Only that IMHO history is what it is and in order to move on and stop the cycle of hate from going on forever, it needs to stop from both sides.

You cant have a war going on, then the war supposedly stops but your still taking pot shots at one another well after. That means you never stopped the war, its still going on just not so rabidly.

In order for racism to be tackled on, it needs to stop from both sides and we need to move forward and stop the pot shots or else we will forever be doomed to see lines of division and never see ourselves as HUMANS but rather the same 'ol black people, white people, asian people etc.

"White linebackers are slow" jokes keep the cycle of HATE going? Blacks don't have the right to enslave, beat, lynch, etc... Whites. It's ok if they are more sensitive about "Blacks are to stupid to play QB jokes", because relatively recently, that would be seen as a factual statement and not a joke. No whites have been kept from playing LB because all whites are considered too slow to play LB. See the difference?

I think the time will come when a joke will be a joke regardless. That is the goal IMO, but I don't have any sort of right to tell a group of people when it's been long enough and that they shouldn't care about history anymore. I know as a white guy I have no problems with white guy jokes. I have had black friends that love black jokes too.

I don't mind black/white/latin or asian jokes at all.

I had nothing to do with the history of slavery so I'm not married into it in the first place. Not every white family took part in having slaves. No one will hold me accountable for slavery, or segragation. That is just wrong.

So should we be mad too?

BTW, let me be clear. I love all races

What this thread has taught me is without a history of slavery, segregation and horrible racism. For instance my grandfather was not taught to read because his parents were afraid that the KKK would kill him. Without all that history and pain, and current problems that are caused by the sins of the past, that there are white people that cannot take a joke.

How do you think other should be able to do things that you are not able to do?

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Thats the thing though, it has nothing to do with you. It's about what was done to blacks and why they are sensitive about certain issues. It doesn't matter who did it, it was done. Clearly some of that community is still very sensitive about that, and that is fine. It doesn't mean that white people need to have the same sensitivity.

Are we such a tit for tat society that white people have to pretend outrage too, so that blacks aren't getting something over on us? Not trying to lay that on you, but a lot of the objections have clearly been about the fact that Blacks can tell the jokes that whites cannot. Which is silly. I'll generalize here, but I doubt many whites were offended by the content of his joke. Sometimes I suspect this issue is more about jealousy.

Are you mad? Should doesn't come into it. Should is me telling you how to feel about stuff. I haven't met anyone still mad about it, so I'd say most aren't.

I'll never know what it is to be black in America, to have my family tell me of their experiences as I'm being raised. I've told horribly racist jokes to black friends who found them to be hilarious (lets be honest, some of those jokes are dammed funny). That doesn't mean it's appropriate for me to joke like that with people whose feelings and history I don't know. Not when there is so much tragedy, injustice, and horror tied to the subject for some people.
