The league has to step in and suspend players for cheap shots. You have to protect the players.

Harrison's chirping like Greg Lloyd used to. Somebody will take a shot at him at some point.

And if/when it happens I hope his career....

Seriously, I have no sympathy for a guy who OPENLY SAYS that his "job" is to injure opposing players, and when he takes them out he "feels as if he's done his job"

What a ****ing waste of fresh air this guy is breathing in.

Since Brandon Marshall enjoys blocking so much.... I hope he issues an elbow to the head of this POS.

No I don't think so. The muddy game right? I think it was a lineman going for the ball. Still, wouldn't put it past Harrison to pull something classless on purpose like that.

NFL won't suspend anyone for this weeks stuff, but they will start in the future weeks. I understand there will be some sentiment of "what happened to tough players blah blah" but really, these kinds of hits are just brutal and should be outlawed and punished. There is a difference between a hit and what we are seeing on some of these "highlights."

The NFL will announce by Wednesday that, effective this weekend, even first-time offenders face suspension for "devastating hits" and "head shots," according to Ray Anderson, the league's executive vice president of football operations.

    get it right:

""I want to hurt somebody,'' Harrison said late Sunday afternoon after doing exactly that twice in the Steelers' 28-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. "If you hurt somebody, they'll be back the next play. I don't want to see anybody injured. An injury will keep you out. But I'm not opposed to hurting anybody.''

    pay attention

Hits should be reviewed before a suspension. Unfortunately everyone will have their own interpretation. You can't compare today's game to years past. Today's players are faster and stronger than the past. Size isn't so much the factor. I don't agree with the defenseless receiver rule and they protect these QB's like they are fine China. There is a serious issue with head/brain trauma in the league and guys tee'n off to make Sportscenter is bull****. Harrison said it right you play to hurt a guy. Make him think 2x about catching the ball or making a cut in the hole. I luv this game and the physicality and violence but not to the point of seeing a persons life ruined. These guys aren't 6yo's in a football camp being taught how to tackle for the 1st time.

I thought the Brandon Merriweather one was much, much worse. He wasn't going for a big hit - he was going for the head.

I think there is a huge difference between going for the big hit and going for the head.

When people hear they are trying to cut back on the head shots they think "THIS IS FOOTBALL!" I think the NFL needs to be careful - if you want to put a shoulder into a guy's chest and light him up - it should be legal. Launching yourself into his head is a completely different story. They went overboard with the QB rules and it leaves a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouth. I understand not going for the knees and not driving them into the ground, but the slight tap of the head when trying to bat down a pass is not a penalty.

And am I the only one not impressed when a safety lights up a defenseless receiver? Knock down a RB in the hole who is looking for contact and you've done something impressive. Blow-up a guy who is looking the other direction and in mid-air and I'm not impressed.

I love the sport - and don't want to watch a bunch of scrub back-ups because all of the stars are injured.

I get your point - and I know you have addressed this - but there is a difference between delivering a big hit and going for the head. What Meriweather did was go for the head. What Harrison does is go for the head. What Clemons did was go for the body. There is a difference.

We are at a point where there is plenty of research about the head injuries suffered by athletes. They make millions - that doesn't mean they should have to sacrifice their post-football lives so we can see a few highlights.

Launching yourself helmet first at a guy's head is not a macho play. I could do that. Go for the ball - go for the body - make a play, not an injury.

It's also funny how this hit gets reviewed, but the (questionable call) Chris Clemons hit doesn't and Clemons automatically gets the suspension.

Beautiful; it's amazing what you can get away with when you're Superbowl MVP in this league. More amazing is what Big Ben got away with though. Twice.

"Funny what you can get away with as a Superbowl MVP..." I love how Rooney released that guy a couple years back for domestic violence (I think it was) and blabbed about morality this and morality that. Oh no, then Harrison and Roethlisberger have similar issues and nothing...lol I love the hypocritical nature of that gentleman.

The Brandon Meriweather hit was just stupid. He's so slow, it actually looked stupid.

The Dunta Robinson hit was fined just to be consistent.

The guy they were going after is James Harrison. He's the only guy that was making a play on a runner which isn't a rule violation. Harrison leads EVERY tackle with the crown of his helmet. Leading with the helmet is already a penalty in high school football although seldom enforced. You can call this the James Harrison rule in the NFL. They were just looking for an ambiguous way to enforce the rule upon him and others like him which would include Zach Thomas if he were still in the NFL.

All of the fines were previously arbitrated between the players association and the NFL. I think someone somewhere has asked the question, "Where does the crown of the head begin?" in arbitration. The NFL response to that has become "Devastating contact".

Pussification? No.... The NFL could deal with the old crippled bastards crying about their bad knees. The thing that they could not defense is men leaving the game damn near ******ed.

    This exactly.

Some of you guys are seriously overreacting. Football is a game of big hits? What about a game of form tackling? That’s a lost art. This wouldn’t even be an issue if players could or would tackle more often. And no, the game doesn’t suffer if there are less big hits. The game suffers when good players are sitting on the sidelines injured or concussed because of a pointless hit. Football games are better, not worse, when talented players like DeSean Jackson are on the field.

If we’re going to whine about the feminization of the NFL, how about wearing pink for breast cancer awareness? Why not scrap the pink and promote testicular or prostate cancer awareness? That would be a little more man-related.

Goodell has a done a lot stupid things. This isn’t one of them.

Harrison says he’s thinking of retiring due to the NFL’s stance on big hits.

So, James Harrison would rather retire than tackle properly, apparently because he enjoys hitting too much. I say he’s in the wrong sport. Go join the UFC, James.

There is actually nothing tough about his technique. It's stupid and it risks neck injury or paralysis upon every tackle. I don't fault him though. There are coaches from Pop Warner to the NFL that are still teaching the same tackling method. I place the blame square upon the coaches and I would like to ask every one of them.......

"What are you doing in your approach to tackling to prevent head and neck injury?"

I'm certain they would rather field the question from me rather than a lawyer.

Great point. With the glut of lawyers with little to no work, the growing amount of research on football related injuries, NFLPA agitation, and the controversy over retiree benefits in the CBA, someone’s bound to get sued sooner rather than later.

And it’ll change the game far more than Roger Goodell ever has.

Hmmmm...... James may be just misunderstood. Let's see if we can help here. Let's get the Steelers fan to lead James to the following video. We'll let Mr. Pop Warner teach him how to tackle so he can still be effective in the NFL.

First you couldn't hit QB's because they are defenseless
Now you can't hit WR's over the middle because they are defenseless
How long will it be before the they start considering RB's defenseless as they are running through the hole.

It all reminds me of the late 70's and that physical Raiders secondary and how the NFL wanted to slow them down to protect big name offensive players. It all just runs full circle and the NFL is making too big of a deal of it. You will see on Sunday how ridiculous it is with all the laundry we will see. Now they are going to pay special attention to it. You won't be able to tackle a WR unless you hit him low and take out his knees LOL.
