that makes him better than Nalbone whom we kept and whom didn't play with the first team at all this preseason! It's very strange...
I don't think I've ever said this before about a player we've released, but I actually hope Martin signs somewhere else and then proceeds to light it up.
I don't see how it automatically makes him better just because Nalbone didn't take 1st team reps. I mean **** Donald Thomas got 1st team reps at one point too, but it looks like he's replaceable. I'm not even saying Nalbone is better, but I wouldn't hang my hat on Nalbone not getting 1st team reps over Martin as justification. I mean if they were planning on using Martin a lot he should get the 1st team reps, but if after he got all those reps they didn't think he'd be able to hold up, how is that an indictment of Nalbone? I'm sure if they would have known in advance that they were going to cut Martin they would've gave Nalbone more reps. I also think Nalbone may have got some snaps while Henne was in, but I'd have to scour all the film to verify the couple of snaps I think he got.
I don't believe DT got those reps after the first game of the preseason. I mean, you get to the third preseason game and the guys who are getting first team reps vs the guys that aren't generally are ahead of them on the depth chart. To then see a week later that a player is cut while the guy below him stays... it's strange. Don't think I've ever seen anything like it in my 28 years of Dolfanhood...
If there's an injury there that crept up in the last 96 hours, okay... I can see that. As to verification on the snaps Nalbone got, I'm hoping one of our trusted local media guys will actually ask that question to Sparano during his PC today.
That means he's in the "Very likely to be signed" category. Every day is opposite day when it comes to Armando Salguero.
I have to wonder if there is any possibility at ALL that they end up only keeping 2 TEs? It would SHOCK me, with Henning's power-run offense, the Wildcat and such and would signal a move towards less power/jumbo formations and a more open offense. If they made that decision, we would see either an extra O-lineman or Lou Polite in as necessary for heavy blocking situations. What it would really indicate to me is we're willing to pass more, and have more three WR sets, and/or focus more on the TEs being pass targets. Perhaps Brandon Marshall's arrival, Wallace, Moore and more trust in the WRs and Henne has convinced the regime to run a more open offensive style? lol. I doubt it though. We'll probably pick up another TE by Tuesday, if not sooner.
We dont need to be running two tight end formations with Fasano and Martin, the object of the game is to put your best players on the field together, putting those two out there does not accomplish that.. Power spread offense with Marsh, Bess, hartline, and Ronnie is what we should be looking into.
I hope you're right. It's the only way for me to rationalize the decision. I just can't see Nalbone getting a lot of reps. The 53rd man on your roster shouldn't be seeing much time.
Just not understanding these personnel moves, to be perfectly honest. Cutting Martin - easily the 2nd best TE; maybe the best receiving TE. And no TE to pick up? Now, Martin has been signed by the Bills? Now, arguably one of the most - if not the most - productive D-linemen in the preseason (Grant) is gone? What? You know that the pressure is now on Sparano. If they don't win - look out ... Maybe they are geniuses. But, not sure I get what Ireland is doing.
got to be more behind the cut... maybe they thought he would still be there after week one & could be brought back, limiting the organizations monetary liability to him in case of injury...confusing. looks like a misread & a mistake to me.
Least enjoyable, least informative thread I've read on this forum in a year. Gotta wonder what the FO is doing but this thread sure isn't giving any answers. And don't look at me I SURE don't have any
I can see them bringing in Tony Curtis,he was just cut by the 49ers.He is still young and traveled around the league. He is 6'5 and considered more of a blocking specialist.
Nathan Overbay was signed to our practice squad... 6-5 270... not exactly a seam buster but he will be third on our depth chart.
My take is that David Martin was brought in to add a vertical threat but he did not click as well with Henne as Roberto Wallace did. This may be more about Henne's arm, where he may be more effective at throwing a 40-45 yard pass than a 20 -25 yard pass. Padre's retro post on 80s NFC East teams reminded me of an accurate, strong-armed QB with zero personality that dominated the following era - Troy Aikman. Their simple offense was able to stretch the field with Alvin Harper, who was a horrible WR when he didn't have Aikman throwing to him and move-the-chain Irvin and Novachek. If the Dolphins felt that Wallace provided a more effective threat to keep the defensive backs from shortening the field, than Martin lost his primary advantage. Secondarily, the 2 TE set creates another personnel grouping that does not mesh with Henning's ability to create horizontal movement and Sparano's appreciation of the Saints' play calling to keep defenses off-balance. The TE position will lose snaps to 3 WR and Wildcat sets. Marshall's ability to run inside routes while Hartline and Bess work the outside should result in the 3 WR grouping being used in ball possession, move-the-chains situations. A Wildcat wrinkle is to get its personnel on the field while using it conventional sets. With more capable WRs, the RBs should be able to take advantage of motion to mask a running play POA or become a more significant target in the passing game. Therefore, the ability of RBs to play the slot and H-back positions reduces the snaps for TEs.
That was not a theory. that was a possible strategy they might have been employing to save a couple of bucks. The Bills picking him up makes the strategy moot.
