Antonio Byrant just got cut by the Cinncinati Bengals. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gQYw9le-bCkIDmh178ct5ymertYAD9HTALTG2
Yeah, I mean the Bengals do have other plenty capable WRs so it may have been easy for them. He might be fairly cheap though, so it could be worth a 1 year shot. Plenty of players come back from injuries to do well [Brees to the super bowl, Pennington multiple times with a division title for us, Ronnie in 2008.]
Bryant's knee had been a chronic problem, at least here in Cincinnati, ever since they signed him, which was long before T.O. I think it's a fairly serious issue.
Where does he play? He'd be our 4th receiver and he does not play special teams, he would be useless on this team the way it is currently structured.
i would bring him in just to see the status of his knee. if the problem would relegate him to being only 75% this season then forget it but if the knee is just recovering and he'll be close to 100% after a few weeks i would do it in a instant. all depends on his knee
Considering he would probably come at a discount, why not use him as a 4th and let him ease into a role here? Then in 2011 let him battle it out for the #2 position.
We don't have the roster flexibility to have a guy "ease in" at the #4 wide receiver position in my opinion. Do we cut a guy with potential that can play special teams so we can have a guy play 15 snaps a game on offense?
In all fairness, he'd be the #2. Bess becomes the slot guy, and then Hartline rotates behind Bryant. That said, Bryant isn't capable of playing football right now thanks to his knee, which is why he was cut in the first place. And let's not get any ideas about Laveranues Coles, either. He's done.
I don't know if that's the "sole" reason he was cut. I think Cincy realized they were loaded at the position and that Bryant was expensive overkill, so they used his injury as an excuse to dump him now while they can. Even if he were 100%, he wouldn't see the field enough to warrant the money he'd get paid. He won't start over TO or Ocho.... and Shipley has nailed down the slot. Plus you have Gresham in on a piece of the receiving pie.
Why not? we did it with Turner (and he didn't contribute anywhere else). We're probably going to do it with one of the WR's on the bubble this season. Who would you rather have on the team: a healthy Bryant?...... or Turner? IMO I'd treat him as an extra draft pick and gauge him on his future potential for the team. If he show's that he'll recover to 100%, then IMO his future value "could" be worth waiting a year to see the rewards. Can he not be signed and stashed anywhere due to his injury?
thats the thing with bryant. i'm not sure he's done for the year. Cincinnati is loaded at WR and it may just have been a salary dump. he was due 1 or 2 million if he was on the roster week 1. it might just be a salary dump
I would bet my NFL Sunday Ticket that it was a salary dump. IMO having Bryant on Cincy makes about as much sense as Carolina hypothetically trading for Matt Forte. I don't penalize the guy (injury or not) b/c he's buried behind 2 premier WRs, right?
yeah i just read his agent is demanding that they pay him the 1.5 million he was due if he was on the roster
He did have a great year in 2008, and 2009 was an injured year for him. He could still be good, I wouldn't trust the Bengals franchise judgment especially when they have TO and Ochocinco ahead of him. They probably feel they didn't need him and saved the $$$. Maybe he knows the Bengals playbook since we play them.
Id at least bring him in and have our doctors take a look at him...we're deep enough that we can bring him in slowly...and he would be taking considerabley less than he would have in the spring....hes definatley got enough talent....see where he's at health wise... A healthy Bryant, Marshall, and crew would be a very dangerous recieving core....
